if you were to ask me, the guys who did the paintjob in the op, listened too many times to the rammstein song, "amerika". i think it's pretty blatantly obvious.

As Zenofex said there’s a history of “artistic” acts toward this monument. My opinion is that there’s nothing to do with globalism. Those people rather show middle finger to Russia because the control during communism than “we’re with US and EU now, and we support everything western”. Yeah maybe there is some pro-western notion too but mostly is the hatred directed to Russia. They use every single symbol that opposes Russia. Many peaople want to see those monuments demolished.
But let me show you some other incarnations of the monument.

An apology to Czech people for the Prague Spring event in 1968. Together with the USSR, Bulgaria participated in the conflict and not even one government had the balls to apologize about it for the past 25 years. The monument was painted on the Prague Spring anniversary. The pink is inspired from some Czech artist who painted a Russian tank in pink in 1991. The text says “Bulgaria apologizes” in Czech.

In support to Pussy Riot punk band

In support to Ukraine

The candles text says “66 years of disgrace”

EU flag to pisses off the Russians

During the resistance against ACTA treaty.

As a conclusion I can say that I'm not against Soviet monuments. They are part of Bulgarian history and (as much as they are painful for some people) should stay as a big reminder of the dark period of oppressions, restricted human rights, no freedom of speech etc. They also should be reminder that it’s about time to take care our own interests, not to run from east to west and vice versa.
