Ebola
I have to admit - and this comes from a guy who doesn't really ever worry about anything - I am mildly concerned. And the ineptitude of the hospital in Dallas at following CDC protocols hasn't done much to inspire confidence in our ability to handle a real pandemic.
Will 2014 Ebola be the next 1918 Spanish Influenza? Our world hasn't dealt with a pandemic of that scale in almost 100 years. Are we equipped to handle it? What steps should governments take to contain the problem? And if the disease does spread, how will it change our society?

The instant speed of communication we are capable of these days will sure help a lot, if it spreads on a scale you are worried about. You can say, that speed will also feed the spread of panic and disinformation we'll go through the social media but I think most people will act reasonably responsible if death zones start to rise.

you would think that most of what is shown about ebola on the news is just your typical fear-mongering media bull****, but when you think about how unorganized and utterly unprepared most people are(groups and organizations, as well as individuals), then you really have reason to worry. more and more often, i see not just carelessness, but outright stupidity.
the question is, what are the actually intelligent people going to do about it?
personally, i say, let plagues run their course. as stevie said, one disease to fight a bigger disease. even if it was possibly invented by humans, as a "cure" for overpopulation; it should run it's course. it's high time something like this came along, regardless of how it came to be.
the only issue i have with this possible culling, is that rich people will most likely survive any such deadly outbreak. and that isn't right. it should be across the board, in my opinion.
not to say that i don't want to live, myself, or my family; of course. it's just that these things are needed from time to time, to restore balance.

I guess politics never change. Back in the 1980's when I was a kid, Chernobyl happened and there was this rumor that all the tea we drink comes from fields that were polluted in terms of radioactivity. So, some politician went on the TV and drank tea live on camera, "huuup, see, I didn't die."
I can relate to the message of "not to panic" but should it be this medieval? The germs did not assassinate me, watch it live!

Probably about half the country would be secretly (or not so secretly) happy. And the other half would claim that Ebola is racist.

I believe that it shouldn't be a big issue, honestly. The way the virus spreads - via contact with blood, or body secretions - means that you actually need some "effort" in a civilized country to get sick (mostly by tending to those already ill) since you don't really have contact with those things on daily basis.
Fortunately the only Ebola version that spreads through air is not harmful to humans.
Also, the vaccine is on its way.
Heck, even Pooland's authorities don't expect more than <10 cases at worst.

Hunger is probably a pretty good cook in Africa.
Generally, it's clearly a bad idea to eat animals with a better immune system than humans. That's why rats shouldn't become part of the diet either; you never know what they may host. Now, with rats it somewhat helps that you see them where the garbage is, which helps in spawning the idea that eating them might be unwholesome.

It's not a conspiracy theory, is elementary deduction. Pharmaceutics companies WANT the population to be sick so they can make a pretty buck out of it when they present the solution. Of course, I'm not blaming them for any of this (though it wouldn't surprise me if they were involved to any extent), I just put them in a different light rather than that of saviors. They're more akin to parasites, hungry to leech money off the backs of the unfortunate.

Quite a lackluster virus/disease w/e tbh, I mean hell the bubonic plague quarantine didn't get this much attention, and that **** is scary as hell. (no cure lol, and it's the ****ing plague man, mother of bodily afflictions)

Actually, it's not the pharmaceutical companies that started this, but it wouldn't surprise me if they've been sitting on a vaccine of some degree of finished for quite some time (the disease has been around and known for decades). If it's got some side effects or just hasn't gone through thorough testing, because that's costly, then it would make sense that it hasn't been broadly deployed. That and because there's not much of a market for it since only poor people seem to get sick (and as we all know, poor people are very bad at paying for expensive medicine).
If there was then a big panic about ebola, well then the vaccine could be deployed quickly and thus get a broad appeal without the costs of broad testing and then the results would act as its full test record.
The conspiracy-like part I see in Stevie's post is the implication that the pharmaceutical company then started spreading the panic. I don't believe that, I think the current panic is spread independently by lots of media, simply because it seems relevant to them and they earn a lot of traffic from it. The media just acts like the media always does, and this one time they acted in a way that a pharmaceutical company might happen to see an opportunity in. Perhaps now, afterwards, the pharmaceutical company is campaigning, but I doubt they'd go through the efforts and risks of starting it.
