greetings

Hydra I had to disagree alot!!

hydra you wrote
"the point I am trying to relay here is that the Phoenix's breath attack comes as a standard feature. While the Faerie Dragons spells don't always eventuate in that manner. So, while the Faerie Dragon has a more diverse list of skills, the ones we are talking about are not standard, and cost spell points."

Fairies have 40 spell points , always have 4 spells, fire ring lightning, fireball and confussion and they all cost 5 spellpoints. As I understand it this is standard features! There is few cases where magic is of no use!! (against black dragons, heros with max resistance and stacks with antimagic). But this is special cases, while part off the evaluation of the creatures, it does not qualify as conclussion that the fairys spell is not standard! They are as much standard as attack and defense and hp!!

Hydra you wrote
"I still believe that the Phoenix has the wood on the Faerie Dragon. It is more practical, it is quicker, and generally deals more damage. The phoenix is quite useful in sieges and open battles. But I believe more so in open battles, because of the range it is able to reach. Although, if attacking in a siege situation, both level 4 creatures are useful, as they both have the ability to fly."

that phoenix is more practical is doubtfull!
I have personally not made up my mind if its more practical to target enemys with a spell requiring line of sight than to fly across the battlefield!! This is certainly also a matter of playing style and army setup!
Phoenix is quicker without doubt, but fairy is still among the quickest creatures, so how many creatures does that advantage count against? Also take into account that faries spell would damage in first round where phoenix maybe not have a target! That phoenix does more damage is again very doubtfull! Against a low defense stack phoenix rules without doubt, against level 4 creature the lightning spell does more damage (and is not retaliated) and casting spell gives at least 1 or 2 free shoots before the enemy level 4 close in! Also its defently easyer to find suitable targets to a firering spell or fireball, than to find 2 or 3 targets for a breath attack! (often the enemy does a nice lineup but you can't attack in the right angle because of obstacles). Finally when phoenix does damage it recives damage, its a mellee creature! The damage recived should be put up against the damage dealt!!

I am still to see the flying off my Farie to be off any importance in a siege! The Phoenix though flying can't just fly over the wall it has to land in the moat and then just jump over the wall next round, this means its going to be exposed!! Where as the Fairys spell can target every enemy in a position to damage you!

about quicksand as gamewinning spell hydra wrote
"That may be so in some cases, but I believe it is too unreliable to use in most cases for me. Spells such as quicksand and firewall aren't to my liking, as I utilise defensive spells, as that is the way I play."

This is not the old quicksand doing random spots, but a new spell where you decide where to put it, so its very very reliable, and with all the obstacle on battle maps homm4, its devaisting! Its situatonal as its put to use against walkers! and its defently a defensive spell, so you might end up like it alot, if you not find too it easy!!

I would like to add something to the more tactical and strategical discussions later, but I fell like I have to play a lot more first

with regards
Jondifool

here my opinions
1) chaos... too powerful on this game: medusas , blackies and stealth ability gives excellent advantage... spells are powerful too
2) order... genies are really unfair on this game... with 30 genies and a wizard you could beat huge forces easily
3) haven... was my favorite town last week... with sanctuary and angel guardian spells combined with angels and monks,  haven is one of the powerful town on game
4) necro is good town too but on cd maps they have disadvantages... i hope on patch 3do will put randomgenerator
5) barbarians... without magic....
6) preserve is the WORST town on heroes4... being rampart fun on heroes3 im really disappointed to see this town weakness....

All hail Bjorn and Arachnid!!! =P

I agree with jondi on several things.

Like jondi, I love spell-casting creatures, especially water elementals, genies, and faerie dragons.

Especially after my incident with the Level 20-something barbarian who had grandmaster melee, and grandmaster combat, and a bunch of other skills... he sieged my home castle (preserve) and I outnumbered him 10:1 at least... but I didnt have any spellcasters, and all my creatures did like 5 damage to him (he had 360 hp or so) so i lost ... Just to give you an idea... my 18 griffins barely scratched him.  His creatures were approximately 10 nomads, 20 berserkers, and 25 centaurs...  although he couldve won with his hero alone.

Then, I brought my main hero (a Level 20 summoner) home, and killed that stupid hero with one ice bolt from my water elementals.  That shows you the value of the spellcaster... while melee units can do a lot of damage or basically no damage, the spellcasters will ALWAYS do the same amount of damage (unless, the opponent has magic resistance) And in that case, the melee creature is better.

So I always try to have both a good spellcaster and a good melee stack in my army, to avoid either worse-case-scenario that I have just described.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Im also proud of the people on this board for stating
their opinions, (in particular: bjorn and arachnid )
as that has seemed lacking in the past...
Im not saying that you should always criticize others,
but when someone is clearly blowing hot air, it should
certainly get an appropriate response, and not a quality
point =P

And Djive, about the "you shouldnt make posts like that
bjorn, it might hurt his feelings"

Ok, I can be a sensitive guy, but come on, we are posting
on a HoMM board on the net, where most of us are teens or
adults... Do you honestly think someone's feelings will be
hurt from some good ol' constructive criticism?

"dont read it if you dont like it"

Well, my personal opinion on it, is that NO, I dont like to read it, but if I want to be involved in the discussion of HoMM4, then I have to read at least some of it, or I wont know what others are talking about when they refer to a post... so it is definitely necessary to read what you dont like, to make intelligent replies (which, by the way, arent what hydras are, just because they use big words and long paragraphs)and not repeat what others have already said.

Hehe, Im getting close to the line, I better stop

Actually if you take into account growth rate, Unicorns generate more offense per week and more defense per week (growth x damage x attack & growth x health x defense, respectively).

I think it boils down to whether the griffin's flight, extra movement, and special ability beat out the unicorn's special ability.

One bizarre but important tactic is controlling how many stacks you have. The computer always tries to split his stacks to as many as yours, which is exploitable.

E.g., i had a tough fight in the order campaign involving about 24 Phoenix, 20 Efreet, 36 Fire Elementals. Attacking with all my best forces (7 units), the Phoenix were split into 2 or 3 units. I could Blind/Berserk or somehow disable one, but the other 2 Phoenix units would shred me.  When i removed some of the units from my stack (so i had only 4 units), the Phoenix were all in 1 unit. So i cast Berserk on them, and effectively had them doing nothing but damaging their own army for the rest of the combat.

Alternatively, if you're using First Strike creatures like Champions, you want the enemy in as many units as possible. Splitting the enemy gives the Champions a better opportunity to wipe out a unit without taking any damage, and more targets to gain the maximum distance with a charge.
