Alon said: Okay, some feedback.
Some nitpicks
1. What is the valkyrie? Is it just a flying rider?
2. What's the source of the salamander? And why is the salamander distinct from the fire elemental, when historically the texts about elementals identified the two?
3. Is the illithid just a caster unit like the mage and such?
4. Why is an untamed cyclops better than a regular cyclops?
General question
How do the armies fight? In other words, what about the fighting style of (say) the stronghold other than the unit names tells the players "these are barbarians"?
1. the valkyrie is a female warrior spirit composed of pure light, and isn't a rider.
2. the salamander is kind of based off of the D&D salamander, except it looks more like an actual salamander, rather than a humanoid fire snake.
3. the illithid isn't really a caster unit, it's a ranged unit that fires psionic blasts and tries to mind control enemies with its psionic magic.
4. why an untamed cyclops is better is because the regular cyclops is more under control, while the untamed cyclops is more likely to go berserk and massacre enemy forces without waiting for orders.
General question
while the units aren't really desert-y in original folktales. What tells the players that these are barbarians is the town appearance, the hero appearance, and the creatures/hero's abilities

Yes, but Alon asked the question, so alon will probably eventually answer.
PS: I updated the idea with spells and warcries.

1. Okay, but what does the valkyrie do? At least judging by names she's a flying mounted warrior, which sounds cool...
2. So, the fire salamander is historically the fire elemental - it just feels weird to me to see both things in the same setting, it's a bit like having both Zeus and Jupiter as available deities to worship.
3. Ooh! Yes, that's what I was wondering about, thanks.
4. But armies want disciplined troops... the dude who charges without orders is just going to get himself and other soldiers on his side killed. (Yes, there are military cultures that aren't like this, but those are cultures that do ambushes and raids, never frontline fighting.)

1. the valkyrie is a flying support troop that has a main purpose of buffing allies.(edit: they are also kind of like light cavalry.)
2. Feels weird?, well I don't think I'll change it, but thanks for the feedback. (edit: maybe fire salamanders are lesser fire elementals the wizards managed to tame/train.)
3. you're welcome for the information.
4. Well barbarians don't have a clever mind, they just rage without giving it a second thought, but when angered more andrenaline surges through the cyclops' bodies and fuels their strength.
PS: I'm working on adding artifacts and their effects to my doc idea.
