Its not surprising.

The USA has double standards, and I think everyone knows that. Its ok for them to laugh at 15 000 frenchmen dying but if someone laughs at an american dying, they might declare war, or as they call it, "peace".

Its because they have power. Power corrupts weak minds.

You can't let it get to you, because it's not gonna change. All you can do is roll with the punches and use it.

And be a good person yourself. That's where it starts.

It all starts with us.. the ones the ppl of earth and reality. We as individuals have no power but our enviroment gives it to us.

I really don't think that it is fair to stereotype Americans as arrogant snobs who care only for themselves. There are people like that all over the world, not just in the USA.

As for the radio station, I believe that American media is in extreme need of regulation. Some will use anything to gain ratings.

As for the deaths, I do think that it is horrible that many are dying because of heat that they may not have eperienced before this summer. It is pathetic how ignorant and apathetic some people can be.

it's a shame what the world has turned into.
Looking back into archeoligical exploits of past civilization brings knowledge of far beautiful kingdoms.. I wish the world had evolved from those, But tryants and dominant kingdoms KILLED Killed them, wiped out alot of good places.

BTW, back then there was primarily slavery.. I think we should turn prisoners into somthing similar.

Do you have any idea the human rights violations that would stem from that?  Even if it started out well, eventually it would be bad.
Even if I do agree that it would be better than crouding up jails and military prisons.

The Inka and the "Mexican" Indians (or Native Americans) were such civilizations. When the Spanish guy (I'm hoorible with names! Was it Cortes?) came to the lands of the Aztecs, there were some 25 million Aztecs. 100 years later - 6 mill... and this was a highly developed civ (at least, their neighbours were) with a welfare system kinda like the one in the Soviet Union, just without the corruption, the greed and stuff.

But making prisoners slaves? That's not too good, is it? (To say it lightly...)

Going back to the title... I don't know exactly how to explain it.

I think it is just our sense of humor.

In 87, when the Challenger exploded there was almost instantly a joke around the playground (I was in 5th grade, 10 years old).

Why does NASA drink Pepsi?

Because they couldn't get 7 up.

So, when 3000 or more people in another country die it is only natural to go off of stereotypes and turn it into a joke.  We do it to ourselves, why not them?

I happen to think they are funny... but as an american my standards are pretty low, because even as a kid I laughed at the NASA jokes.

-----------------

Also, to a lot of americans, people in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and some parts of California... 98 degrees is sweater weather.  They get up over 120, which most country's can't even imagine.  They've had a lifetime to get used to it though, so they may not understand.

The Aztecs were sacrificial heathans who tortured their prisoners of war and bathed in their blood. Oh, yes, they were a great and educated people all right. Cortez did the world a favor.

And Amercians aren't insensitive, you're just listening to 1/1000th of the our citizens' opinions and inferring that we all think that way.

Advantage, Bort.  Well said .

Didn't Cortez actually take their leader (Montezuma) hostage, and ransom him for a room full of gold?

The loyal subjects spent weeks going to everyone, and gathering all the gold they had, to save him.

They filled the room with gold, as agreed.

Cortez, in his infinite wisdom, accepted the gold, then Killed Montezuma.

No that was Pizarro to the south who Ransomed the Inca leader Atahuallpa. Cortez did kill/have killed Montezuma during the first stage of the Aztec conquest it's true, but he first attempted to use the Aztec leader to force his nobles to behave themselves, the nobles and others refused, recognising that Montezuma had no power. They then threw Javelins and stones at Cortez. Some sources claim Cortez Garrotted Montezuma, others that he was hit by a missile and fell to his death as he was standing on a high wall at the time.

Strangely enough the two men (Cortez and Pizarro) were related and came from the same area of spain. Pizarro sought out Cortez before setting out to smash the Incas, presumably he needed advice on the most efficient way to slaughter "heathens".

As for the Aztecs/Incas themseleves, yes they were by no shape or form perfect, and yes they had corruption. Both failed to really understand their enemy, or adapt to their arrival until it was fatally late, though at least the Incas fought much harder and seemed more capable despite being outwardly of the two the less warlike. Both though showed signs of high civilisation, the Aztec cities had excellent waterworks and irrigation, the Incas excelled at building cities and empires in the most inhospitable of places and so on.

To say either Native empires "deserved" their fate is to suggest say that the European/American nations that brutally slaughtered such peoples also deserve to be treated in exactly the same way. I would suggest a group of people who fed people alive to their war-dogs, slaughtered the old, sick, infirm and young with almost glee and did all this in the name of something you can neither eat, drink or breathe are no better than another group who make live sacrifices. Indeed an Inca chronicle had a cartoon of an Inca gentleman ask a spaniard "do you eat this gold?" the spaniard is replying "yes! most certainly we do!"

Oh and on the room filled, it was filled to the height of which Atahuallpa could stretch his arm above his head. This resulted in some (alleged) 6 tons of gold and 13 of silver, Pizarro then claimed Atahuallpa was plotting against him and had him Garrotted. He was going to burn the gentleman alive (do tell me Aquaman333 which is more civilised, burning someone alive or ripping their heart out?) but the Inca beliefs said that this would destroy the soul and their afterlife. Pizarro agreed to "commute" the sentence if Atahuallpa was baptised.

You would assume so, the point rather though is that neither were either civilised, nor more or less deserving of being killed off for their actions. The Aztecs were the victims of Genocide because they screwed up and were in a bad situation from the word go, not because of their morality or otherwise.

Unless someone is going to try and claim Cortez and Pizarro really were divinely inspired to slaughter non-believers...

I think it can be agreed that there are asses from virtually every generation dating back farther than written history.... most of them on behalf of one religion or another.

So, to get back to the topic, maybe it is human nature to be an ass, and not just an american trait?
