Isn't the spell researching optional? Why dislike it?

I dislike it because, for me, it is not something that represents original heroes 3 gameplay. It is more ERA like, imo. But, I must also say, that is my personal opinion, and I'm not saying that HotA team did something bad. I just don't like it, but I will not tell the guys who brought us HotA what to do.

And the Forge when AB was in the works...
Just kidding. Nothing wrong with different opinions. Conversely I like the spell researching. However I am glad if they keep it optional.

Because they should keep every change to existing h3 mechanic optional. As singleplayer h3 player, I will mostly play SoD - not fan of ruining maps that were made with SoD imbalance in mind. I will be surprised if they dont remove ability to build vampire lords dwelling upgrade completely at some point. As far as I remember I cannot even add cyclops crystal cost back, remove gems from archangel cost and bring phoenix base growth to 2 for my own gameplay because files are ciphered.

Firstly, I would like to thank all of you wonderful people in the Hota team. I've been playing the newest version for a few days now, and I really enjoy it.
When speaking about spell research, I would like to encourage people to actually test this new feature. I can understand that this thing wasn't excalty what people were asking for, but the spell imbalance in this game is an existing problem, so I can see why this feature was added.
There are few ways to affect this problem, like they could easily ban some spells, or nerf them, or largely buff spells that see only very minor or no use at all. Or then they could make the "op" things more accesible for all players - and that's where the spell research comes in to play.
So let's give the team a chance to try this thing out, so play it and give feedback about it.
At first glance the feature feels about right, researching spells ain't cheap and that's a good thing imo. Researching also looks visually very nice, as the glimmering spell on the crystal ball is a real eye candy.

Good post. I agree completely.
Ah, can't wait for 1.5.1. However small of an update it may be it's always welcome.

100% agree on making the more experimental changes optional, but then again if you want the original experience play the vanilla sod.
The new terrain was quite unexpected but I see no point keeping learning/useless SS untouched since they modified scouting and necromancy. Learning is worthless since you all know the experience used to learn it at expert will be evened out compared to a hero without it on later levels and it essentially wastes your slot.
Quoting from the age of heroes secondary skills page: "...non-learned hero gains 55000 experience, hero's level will be 18. Say you've learned basic Learning at level 3, advanced at level 5 and expert at level 8, this would have turned 55000 experience into 62475 experience, making that hero level ... 18."
Although it doesn't break the game like necromancy does it will always be avoided in any sort of game making no point to keep it the way it is.

Few days ago we all had the possibility to easily mod HotA to what we like. We already had a HD-mod-Plugin to improve learning and also other SS.
But baratorch removed the possibilty to load Plugins recently, only for HOTA. In SOD you can still load plugins. So I assume the HotA crew decided to prohibit plugins ?
I hope it is only a temporary step, until baratorch can make sure that plugins can not be used to crash/cheat multiplayer games.
If Plugins will never be alloweed again, I think this is a very poor decision. No one should forbid modding. Imagine someone would forbid to pusblish HoTA or HD mod...

The purpose of mod is to let people benefit from its changes. Limiting main target to multiplayer fans and leaving singleplayer players be with "new changes" is not perfect solution. Playing SoD is playing SoD, but when mod comes it would be cool if it could be fit to full extent to as players as possible. I wanna play SoD with cove and new buildings, that's it. In WoG you could practically have vanilla SoD by unchecking all changes and still benefit from scripted maps etc.

The purpose of the project like HotA is the self-realisation of its creators and the development and promotion of their view on Heroes 3. Other things depend on this view. For HotA the consistency and integrity is more important then modifiability.

Wait, what is and how does Spell Research works? I played the new HotA a few times but I missed it as a feature? Is it similar to Age of Wonders?

I'm not sure how Hota limits your gameplay? RMG is even richer than ever, as the template editor was released. I have had some really good games against AI, since you can now create templates that are largely either limiting your own game or giving AI huge advantages by making their starting zones much richer than yours.
And if you prefer playing custom maps, I would say Era has most stuff going on there. If you're prefering to play SoD maps, well, those maps were created for SoD enviroment. I would say there are a lot of maps where it really doesn't matter if you play them with or without Hota, and it's not like you - can't - play them, since you can always launch Sod.

Easily? you modded nothing, just waited that other people spend tons of time time and make plugins for you, that is not "easily" unless THEY claim it. Of course Hota is moddable, granted you have the knowledge how to. But "easily", modding never was.
