It all depends on whether or not you can afford to go for capitol after you've built up your creature dwellings. If money is scarce, going for creature dwellings may force you to wait a long time before you can finally get the capitol up. In the mean time, an opponent who focussed on getting up his economy can then build up his troops at his own pace, while you've been crippled.

If money is available in abundance, go for creature dwellings, as you can afford them and go for capitol later on once the resources in your starting area are getting depleted.

No, I have no problem with those people who want to play ultra-rush playing ultra-rush. But since I'm quite confident in stating that that is a very little minority of all the games played, it still seems a bit flat to say that it's not a problem that rushing to Capitol is very easy because it will not be an advantage in some games - of course it's true, but if it's an advantage in 95% or more of the games, it seems like poor game design imo.

It's a matter of balance, not poor design. Make capitol costs 30000 gold, and 95% goes down to 5%. Now we should find the balance somewhere between.

No. Factions would just have advantages and disadvantages. That's not making the game imbalanced that's making the game diverse.

that's not the way to do it, in this case the faction with stronger units would smash through the weaker ones no matter what starting somewhere in month 2... that's not diverse that's just imbalanced

Do it wrong and you are just as likely to have an imbalance the other way. If you have a faction that can develop really, really fast, but has troops that are only slightly weaker then you get an imbalance that allows you to crush an enemy in week 2. That said there is no reason mathematically why you can't have an optimal balance.

yeh, right now you have mathematical balance and everyone can get the capitol superfast there's only one tiny obstacle - creature/ability balance, but i think that in our mathematical spirit we can all agree to play say heaven magic and... tada perfect balance

but that would be boring wouldn't it? and on more serious note it's not easy (in fact is very hard) to balance couple factions with different creatures so they cut some fat from it by streamlining towns, it's not perfect but does take care of huge balance problems that can't be managed in all circumstances.

if you think you can balance weaker/stronger creatures by town development speed then you are wrong, as you develop your town only 'some' time and eventually everyone will have all the dwellings and upgrades, and from that point on the stronger creatures will start to gain on the weaker and there is no end to it, and eventually they will win.

This actually feels more like the HoMM2 days, whereby a full town can be built in a little more than 2 weeks. Most factions had their 6th tier up by 1st or 2nd week. The game rolls fast and it's all about exploration, expansion and quick tactical rushes. Your kingdom is basically the map and people conquer towns as fast as they can.

H5 seems to be... ... well, your entire kingdom is only your town, though it takes long to build and has alot more to build. Most maps only have 1 town per player and they just battle it to the death when they're done building. It's only a matter of who builds and levels faster.

Prefer the H2/H6 style ^^

At least H2 had decent town screens.
