How Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege Methodically Became A Significant Esport

Rainbow Six Siege is the latest installment in a long-running series of games inspired by the Tom Clancy books. In 1998, the series was created from Rainbow Six, the 10th book in the series. After a flop launch of Rainbow Six Siege in 1998, Ubisoft developed a systematic strategy to grow the game as an electronic sport. It's on the verge of becoming a major title within the esports industry after years of investment and testing.

This is how Rainbow Six Siege grew from a small beginning to a rapidly growing electronic sport.

What is the Origins of Rainbow Six Siege?

The final 17-games release from the series the rapidly growing league of Rainbow Six Siege Its roots can be traced back to 1984 the year that Tom Clancy, an American novelist, published The Hunt for Red October. The book later became an important motion picture. It was Clancy's debut book. Clancy also made through video games by founding the company Red Storm Entertainment in 1996 (it was later acquired by Ubisoft four years later). Three series were developed loosely based on the novels of Tom Clancy: Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six. The publication of this book came out just two weeks before the release in 1998 of Rainbow Six Siege. It demonstrates a Rainbow counter-terrorism unit training for different missions.

For Rainbow Six Siege, publisher Ubisoft implemented the "Game as A Service" (GaaS) model offering content and support in the long term to foster an active community instead of creating additional opuses. This model ultimately proved successful: after successive upgrades of the game and content additions, the game has garnered 40M players in this year.

What is Rainbow Six Siege?

Nowadays, the rapidly growing league of Rainbow Six Siege and that is the first video game to be exclusively focused on multiplayer. It's a strategic first-person shooter (FPS) where a team of five players has to defend or attack a specific target on a map in a limited amount of time to score points. You can either destroy the entire team of players who are defending or one of the two bombs that are hidden on the map in order to win. The defense side wins the round by eliminating all attackers, or dismantling the device that defuses a bomb within seven seconds of its activation by the attackers.

A ban and pick phase is also introduced before the game begins as in League of Legends or Dota 2, so that the teams can take on the opposing strategy. Prior to the start of a game the players pick a varying amount of maps (depending on the duration of the game) and four operators - the characters that have their own set of abilities and tools, to ban. The maps of the game are selected and the game starts. The players select their operator and their gear for each round, and they switch from attacking and defending.

What's the Esports Strategy of Rainbow Six Siege?

Two months after the game's release in January, Ubisoft announced the first Pro League circuit. The circuit was revamped to an old-fashioned league format in summer 2018. The circuit is split into Pro and Challenger leagues. The Pro League gathers eight teams and takes place in four regions: Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific. Matches are unique games (best of one) divided into six consecutive attacks and defenses. The matches are won by teams with seven points.

The season lasts six months, and includes offline finals against the best two teams from each region. On the other hand the team with the lowest ranking is relegated in Challenger League and the second worst has to get a qualification to keep its place for the following season. Challenger League is an amateur league that is based on the Pro League format. The Pro League invites the top-ranked team to join Pro League, while the second-best team can be the winner by beating the second-worst Pro League team.
