Oh yeah, I love it!
Next to the Heroes series, Sid Meier's games are the best. (Although SMAC is more of a Brian Reynolds design, I think.)
Unluckily, it keeps crashing on my newer computers, so I am forced to play it on an old 120MHz with 16MB RAM, which is, to say the least, VERY slow...
And since it needs DOS to run, it on't work on my newest PC either. Lousy XP pro with no DOS....
But the game is great. I recommend to all who like turn based strategy games!

I loved Alpha Centauri!
The University was the best, then the Spartans!
But I can't find a copy of Alien Crossfire for Windows anywhere, just the Mac version

Oh, no!
The Peacekeepers were the best!
+One talent weighed up for the -one efficiency.
Best social engineering: Democracy, Green, Knowledge and Cybernetics (or whatever it was called). Research with the speed of light, and a ridiculously high mindworm capture rate!

I have played both the original and crossfire, and I have to say that I prefer the pirates from crossfire, or the spartans from the original. However, for sheer customisation, AC was really king

Those were my two favorites from each addition too PH
I loved how the pirates could cover the map like a DISEASE really quickly!
And as the Spartans I rock. No-one can stand up to my might muahahahaha!

Aye, Pirates are good, people used to be able to "limit" me (so they thought anyway) during the early game because I would never use land bases, but that was just a trick, I'd cover the sea lanes with massive numbers of cities, dominate the voting system and "persuade" others to raise the sea levels! Eventually I'd develop that tech that allows hovering vehicles, by when I'd build them en masse and attack one faction after another....

SMAC is so underrated. Best game of the 20th century, if you ask me.
And now that I've found the 2000/XP patch, I can play it whenever I like
