Master Of Magic - truly i
There are many suggestions flowing thru this forum. Some of them would be very innovative when it comes to Homm - overland spells, town population, etc.
The thing is that these, and many, many more are already implemented in 1993 game - Master Of Magic. A truly outstanding game. If you play HOMM solely for graphics, please don't read more. I would not write this if it was impossible to play MOM on even most modern machines. More on this later.
Some info about MOM:
- a game similar to Civilisation, but in fantasy setting. Very different and innovative when compared to civ.
- town population, buildings, troop recruitment, heroes, homm-like combat etc are already there !
- There are many many fancy combat spells, like mass invisibility, flight, warp wood (destroys ammo, arrows), combat summonings, Wall Of Fire to protect town, Counter Magic, Possession, Cloak Of Fear, Entangle, and much more !
- There are many Overland spells, like Change Terrain, Floating Island, Lycantrophy (!), Wraithform (!), Windwalking, Pathfinding, Planar Travel, Planar Seal, Meteor Swarms, Earthquake, Call The Void, Zombie Mastery, Wind Mastery (.....) There's variety of overland offensive spells, positive and negative city enchantments, and so forth.
- Spell research - you gradually gain access to more and more powerful spells, many of them very impressive and putting homm serries to shame.
- Mana for casting spells is gained (and accumulated) from town structures like temples, magical nodes, etc. Some races simply get mana for existing.
- Around 12 or so different races. When you create a game, you choose your race, magic, special abilities etc seperately. Lots of replayablity.
- diplomacy: treaties, alliances, exchanging spells, tributes, threatening, asking someone to break alliance with someone else....
-unit experience
- Settlers, ability to create new towns. Ability to completely raze towns ! Ability to sell town buildings one by one.
- Over 40 unique summonable fantastic creatures, which you keep outside battles and feed with mana.
= much, much more.
IF you somehow think you have groundbreaking suggestions for Homm, you should play Master Of Magic first. It's magic system is much more ballanced than that of heroes4: you get 5 different magic shools,( and they're based on MTG, too !), but many spells like Dispel, Disenchant, Detect Magic, Summon Hero, Create Artifact are considered Arcane - anybody can learn them eventually.
You can download MOM from Home Of The Underdogs:
http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=687
(manual at the same page).
But you desperately need Dosbox emulator to run it with working sound on your windows/linux machine.
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1
(to tune the game speed, use ctrl-F7/F8 keys)
Grrreat info page, in some ways better than manual:

\======================
I really don't know why do I write this. Younger players surely won't stand graphics.
Older/more strategy interested players most probably already played Master Of Magic. Sigh...

B0rsuk, I 100% agree with you. There are lots lots places, where Master of Magic puts heroze in to the shame! Yeah, spells, races, units, heroes with their abilities is unbelievable. The only thing why i dont play this game, because it runs on 320x200 resolution, and i have 19inch monitor..LOL. But I think heroes is better then mom in the case of simplificy. Its more simple, because fixed towns, 1-2 big armies other is scouts , and so on.. MOM begins ususaly boring in late, and its AI is pretty stupid.

Well as you wish:
My cat is black with white stains (or white with black stains, I can't figure out). He's quite smart, VERY sociable, loud, curious, and ravenous.
He doesn't bother with opening doors other than fridge and various food containers (keep trying, kitty). Why do something if you can cry loud making others do it for you ?
Pig : not to mention jus *barely* finite amount of serious bugs. And serious imbalances... but the game never had real multiplayer so it'd be rather hard to figure out (yes I have the multiplayer shell utility)
I agree that Homm is better for quick games.
Still, considering how old the game is, it's simply great.
It shows how much modern developers neglect the gameplay, and focus on graphics and realtime instead.
You typically have several nations/races in ordinary TBS game, 4 in RTS is considered a lot. And so forth.
