Poll Question:
Hirelings

I had the following ideas on a new feature for HoMM IV. I've called it Hirelings. The idea is that each town type offers you to hire 1 or 2 different hirelings, the hirelings become available when you've built or upgraded a certain building in the town. These hirelings then accompany heroes and confers skills or bonuses to them.

Hirelings
Each Hero may have up to three Hirelings. Hirelings gives the Hero certain advantages as detailed below. Hirelings are Hired per week, hence to employ them longer will cost more money. Hirelings can be dismissed at any time.

I've listed one possible Hireling per town type below.

Preserve Hirelings:
Scout: Works as though the Hero has Expert Scouting. Cost: 200 Gold/week.

Academy Hirelings:
Pegasus: Enemy spellcasters must pay an additional 2 for each spell cast in combat. Cost: 200 Gold/week.

Asylum Hirelings:
Guide: Works as though the Hero has Expert Stealth. Cost: 200 Gold/week.

Stronghold Hirelings:
Officer: Works as though the Hero has Expert Tactics. Cost: 500 Gold/week.

Haven Hirelings:
Ambassador: Works as though the Hero has Expert Diplomacy. Cost: 750 Gold/week.

Necropolis Hirelings:
Familiar: Channels 20% of spent enemy spellpoints into the Hero's pool. Cost: 200 Gold/week.

Responses:
Great idea! I love hirelings!
Bad idea. I hate hirelings.
Dunno.

sorry for the sarcasm, but would it work like adding a hero with the skill into your army in many cases?

I intended only Heroes to have Hirelings, so the effect of hiring an hireling is enhancing the Hero's powers. In four cases it gives the Hero access to a skill that he/she hasn't yet achieved himself/herself. In the two remaining cases, the hireling bestows a special ability upon the Hero.

The hireling isn't intended as a stack by itself, or to be associated to a stack of cratures. Instead each hero has 2 or 3 slots which can be used for hirelings. Hirelings can also be traded between heroes, for instance after they've become redundant.

I like this idea Djive!
The Preserve ability is good, as you can let your heroes concern about combat or magic skills, and let the hireling do the scouting.

You could....

But then the monster takes up one stack.
And Morale penalties will apply (The creature will likely not be from your home town).

Hirelings are better compared with miscellaneous artifacts, but they are hired per week instead of equipped.

I believe the Bandits already have Advanced Stealth, but likely will their ability not extend to other troops that travel with them.

Somebody mentioned them being to cheap... Perhaps they are but I'd not want to pay all that much more for them. Perhaps some, but certainly not all. The thought is that you have to be build/upgrade a certain builing in the city to get Hirelings to Hire. That will inevitable mean postphoning some other build. Thus this is a strategical decision.

Also if you wait too late in the game, then you will likely develope Heroes who have the abilities and their use will diminish.

You answered your own question. Some cost more because they are better than others, some cost less because they're not so useful.

As for the actual prices, they are of course debatable. The prices are there to signify that the Hirelings have different usefulness and therefore also costs more.

Familiars may for instance be under-priced, at least if spell-casting will be common and they can pool spell-points both from creatures and heroes.

The Hirelings listed are just examples.

LordTitan settle down! Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion!

I think it's a great idea, although in order for the hero to recruit Hirelings the Hero should have at least Basic Diplomancy or Advanced Leadership.

then in this case the best for the job will be ryland...then this will be really unfair to other castle such as the necros cuz they can't have leadership ...what i mean before is that it will be unfair that some castle get's all teh goodies why some get's not so good ones...

Since we're coming with related ideas ...

.. I'll bring back this topic from the void.

In relation to Strangers. Some Strangers could become Hirelings (or rather coccupy a Hireling slot) in some cases.

If you look at for instance the Leper in the Stranger thread the Leper could be a Hireling until the party reches the Sanctuary. Other Strangers could be customized to become Hirelings in certain circumstance.

Anyway, with this new developement it migh be better to call them Followers or Henchmen rather than Hirelings. Still it's not possible to rename a topic, so I'll continue to refer to them as Hirelings.

As for the Strangers idea I would want you to come up with some ideas for Hirelings.

Also don't mention 'hiring' prices. It seems from the comments above that this is what attracts most of the comments and detracts from the discussion at hand.

Edited the post (agaian) and revamped the original proposal a bit (and omitted the prices). Most Hirelings will still a have a price per week.

I'm also proposing a new special slot for a Hireling. The mount. This means that one of the Hirelings the Hero can have is a horse, and if the hero has no horse he/she has to walk. Note: Heroes are restricted to 1 mount at a time.

Preserve Hirelings:
Scout: Works as though the Hero has Expert Scouting.
Zebra: Improves the speed of the mounted hero. (Bonus is bigger in Forests.)
Unicorn: Improves the speed of the mounted hero and places the spell "Blind" in the Heroes spellbook.

Academy Hirelings:
Seasoned Mage: Each spell costs 2 less to cast.
Ardenner: Increases the movement speed of hero. (Bonus is bigger on snow.)
Pegasus: Gives the Hero the Flying ability, and a an increase in speed. (Could require Grail or similar to be available.)

Asylum Hirelings:
Guide: Works as though the Hero has Expert Stealth.
Nightmare: Increase the movement of Hero. Allows Hero to cast any spells it has in its spell-book. (Movement bonus is bigger on snow.)

Stronghold Hirelings:
Officer: Works as though the Hero has Expert Tactics.
Warhorse: Gives the hero First strike and a Jousting bonus when charging into combat. Also a moderate movement bonus for the hero. (Bonus bigger on rough terrain.)

Haven Hirelings:
Ambassador: Works as though the Hero has Expert Diplomacy.
Noble Steed: Gives a big movement bonus for hero. (Bonus is bigger on Grass.)
Increases the cpst for enemy spell-caster by 2.

Necropolis Hirelings:
Familiar: Channels 20% of spent enemy spellpoints into the Hero's pool.
Infernal Mount: Gives a movement bonus for the hero. (Bonus is bigger on volcanic terrain.) Also give an additional 10% damage to all spells cast by the Hero.
