Poll Question:
Cratures

I think that there should be more creatures in HOMM4 than 66. I think that more opportunities mean more fun. So what more castles and creatures that more fun!
I mean they could just convert old creatures from previous HOMMs and give them special skills... Or search new creatures from mythology - they haven`t used them all!

What do You think?

It's okay as-is

With 48 creatures in towns compared to 56 (really, how often have you used non-upgraded creatures late in a game when it actually makes a difference?) and each town having 8 different ways to build instead of just one, I'm happy with the game as-is. More creatures would be fine with me, but I'm not mad that they've cut down the number a little. At least now each one is more unique.

...hmm, weren't there nearly twice as many creatures in HoMM3? Of course there should be at least a few more creatures...just not a good idea to overdo it and outweigh the importance of the Expansion/s

I'm playing the Inferno town right now, (just out of bordom, I don't really like them) but I "do NOT" upgrade the Gogs. The Magogs suck 'cos they hurt my own units! I hope they don't do something stupid like that again.
I don't upgrade most of the Lvl1 creatures since they just seem to be fodder anyway,(why waste the extra money).

Quite often actually. For various tactical reasons. It usually doesn't happen for level 7 creatures, where the upgrade difference is huge but for lower level creatures I use the non-upgraded creatures throughout the game.

This also depends on the cash situation. If you can afford to upgrade all creatures, then of course you do so but on most maps this is simply not possible.

what about upgrading gremlins? they're not a bad lvl1. and i think personally that there HAS TO BE more creatures because the game will get routine with so few creatures...

Personally, I think with the new role of heroes in your armies, it's going to be a long time before things get 'routine' in a game for me. There is the very real potential for dozens of new 'creatures' in your armies that gain experience and constantly improve, and the best part is, you never really lose them. Either they'll be in an enemy prison, or on the map under a tombstone if they get defeated in battle. In both cases, you can get them back. (In the Gamespot interviews, Jeff Blattner stated that your heroes, once hired, remain loyal, so there's no fear of your defeated archmage coming back under somebody else's flag)

It seems that every time someone gets nostalgic for the number of creatures in H3, they conveniently forget about the lame or nearly useless units, and they always count the basic and upgraded creatures as different. In most cases, the upgrade was better (I'll concede the point on Gogs...I never upgrade them myself), and was the unit produced and used in the mid and late games.

With the higher growth rate on the lower levels, and the way retaliation has been changed, even peasants in sufficient numbers would seem to be useful now. And it looks like getting those numbers will not be hard.

Would more distinct and useful units make the game more interesting? Yep, but the key words are distinct and useful. Let's give the 66 units we're going to have a chance before we start clamoring for more. Will some of those 66 units turn out to be duds or losers? Very possibly, but I'm hoping the overall ratio is lower than in H3.
