Legendary Creatures

This has probably been suggested before, but just in case it hasn't, what are people's views on this:

Sometimes when creating maps, I have wished to be able to place a very powerful version of a creature instead of a group of creatures.

I think it would be nice if in the Editor would allow you to change the attributes of a  creature.  This raises some issues:

The simplest approach would be to specify that a creature is equal to a certain number of its normal type.  For example, you could specify that a special Titan is equal to 5 normal Titans.  It would have the same hit points as 5 Titans, and even though it's attack and defense would be the same as a normal Titan, it could  do the same damage as 5 Titans (or perhaps the same as just one Titan?).

A more complex approach would let you alter each attribute independently.   Thus a special window in the editor would let you alter the creature's Attack, Defense, Hit Points, Damage etc.

The next issue would be how to identify these creatures on the map (so they can be distinguished from other normal creatures of their type).  The simplest approach would be to not identify such creatures, which could possibly result in some unpleasant surprises!

If they are to be identified, I have two approaches.

Any creature that has been modified, has the word "Legendary" as a prefix to it's name.  Thus you could have a Legendary Titan, or Legendary Ancient Behemoth etc.  This approach would not distinguish between a special creature that was twice as powerful as a normal one, and a special creature that was 20 times as powerful as a normal creature.

A more complex approach would be to give the creature a classification depending on how enhanced it is.  For example:

A creature that is rated as being between 2 and 5 of its normal type might be labeled as "Noted" - e.g. A Noted Black Dragon.

A creature that is rated as being between 6 and 10 of its normal type might be labeled as "Renowned" - e.g. A Renowned Black Dragon.

A creature that is rated as being between 10 and 20 of its normal type might be labeled as "Famed" - e.g. A Famed Black Dragon.

A creature that is rated as being over 20 of its normal type might be labeled as "Legendary" - e.g. A Legendary Black Dragon.

The Last issue is whether enhanced creatures can be recruited (by offering to join you when you fight them) or work with other creatures.  The simplest solution would be to dictate that they will never offer to join a Hero, and that they can never fight beside normal creatures.

If they do offer to join, or can fight with other creatures, I imagine that the implementation would be complex.  Several other issues would be raised by such an approach.

Do people think this suggestion has merit?

Yes I think this idea is very good.  It was always kinda unsettling to play a map in which you had to destroy 'a creature' as a victory condition and end up fighting like a pack or lots of that creature.
Also imagine suping up a halberdier who would have a legendary story of being some great dragon slayer.
Definitely needed for good rpg style map.

To add to this idea what if a creature could have hero- like qualities as well. ie can use artifacts, skills/experience, and maybe even move around the adventure map and recruit followers...  It would be fun to try and track down such creratures.
This concept is similar to defeat hero victory condition except that the creature does not need a town and therefore will not be banished.

Keep up the good work Mechashef. It's always good to see fresh ideas.

(Z)Angband...

I think it's a good idea.. For those who have played Angband or any version of it. ..I couldn't help thinking of unique monsters... They could have a chance in homm too.. Altered of course.. One unique monster with his henchmen... (same type, only normal)

Boss creature??

I've seen Arachnid mention something about boss creatures, and I feel that it would be a rather nice thing to see in Heroes4.They are simply enhanced versions of the strongest creatues we see in the game.To make them unique, they could be named in the map/campaign editor.

These legendary monsters could possibly behave like a hero, only that it has no secondary skills. It could lead an army of lesser creatures or weaker versions of its kind. It's more credible in the sense that the strongest creature leads the entire tribe.

legendary creatures.....

hey!

i love this idea and glad that u mentioned it. Having a creature that can be customised is great for any map and think of the possibilty of adding it to campaigns...awesome...think of the potentials of this addition....
also a lengendary creature is nothing without a name...
i suggest that since u can customise just about everything else, why not customise the name as well? i mean it sounds much better than just "legendary dragon" right?
eg. Smaug can be guiding the one ring once he is kiled along with other treasures.

what do u guys think??

yes the name could be customized too! and actually an edited monster could be just like a hero except it doesnt move... so what i mean is it could also have artifacts, perhaps special artifacts?

I like this idea.  This would enhance the story of killing "Queen, King, Leader" creatures.

I agree too....like everyone else it seems

I think that it would be a good idea. I have heroes three, and fair enough it is really good, but i do not have the rest. #Sigh# (in time i hope to) Even in levels that i creat i have always wanted to put in one solitary creature that would be able to maul, as it were, many armies before being defeated. So i think that this would be a good addition to the new game.

If they allow unit editing it should be full-fledged unit editing and not some pansy multiplication.

Also they should provide a special tag in maps that have been edited in such a way that they will not play like a standard map (edited units, events, quests, etc). This way you can immediately tell the map will not necessarily have the same balance as usual. I think something maybe a little below the Starcraft editor would be pretty good as a start of a new brand of Heroes editors. (Of course they should eventually work up to more complexity if the UMS community thrives... but there's no garauntee about that so it's best to start with something a little simpler)
