Mounted Heroes in Battle

When reading some other thread (forgot which) I thought that it might be cool to have the heroes take their mounts into battle. Every alignment should be able to buy special mounts in their castles with different combat stats, and when a hero is mounted he gets to use his mounts special abilities and hitpoints.

The mounts should come in several levels like the ordinary creatures and increase in stats for each level. When a hero is mounted, you first have to take out his mount before any damage is taken to the hero, and when the hero attacks you chose between using his attack (possibly with some bonus) or the mounts special attacks. On the other hand, when the mount is killed you have to get back to your town (or special stables on the map) to buy another one. There could also be some kind of movement bonus on the map when the hero is mounted.

For example:

Life - Horses
-------------
Lvl 1:  Horse
Damage: 10-15
HP:     50
Attack: 25
Defence:20
Move:   10 (+3 extra on adv map)
Speed:  Same as hero
Specials: -
Price: 500

Lvl 2: War Horse
Damage: 20-30
HP:     100
Attack: 30
Defence:25
Move:   12 (+6 extra on adv map)
Speed:  Same as hero
Specials: Charge
Price: 1000

Lvl 3: Pegasus
Damage: 30-40
HP:     200
Attack: 35
Defence:30
Move:   14 (+9 extra on adv map)
Speed:  Same as hero
Specials: Charge, Flying, First Strike
Price: 2000 + 5 gems

I didn't give the stats to much thinking over, it's just an example. Perhaps there could also be a special skill to make the heroes able to use their mounts more effectively, boosting attack stats and such.

What do you think of this

There has been some mention of mounts in recent topics. There was also one more topic, but I noticed when looking back to it that it contained overall few suggestions.

I can agree that every alignment should have 1-2 mounts to pick from, but the rest of the mounts can be offered from external Stables. You don't need to offer them all in town. It is probably better to have most of them as external only.

Hero mounted... I'm a bit hesitant to this. It's difficult to make good animations of riding characters (and H4 centaurs are a good example of a poor result here), and strategically I don't want my heroes to be a multi-hex creature because it makes the hero much harder to defend, and also limits the hero movement-wise. So I prefer my heroes to be represented as small units on the battle-field.

I don't agree with the stats you have assigned to the mounts. Mounts should not have a level. In my opinion you just have mounts with various abilities.

I suggested taking out the mount first myself, mainly as way to prevent heroes to be killed in the first attack in a battle.

I don't think a mount should have its own attack, defence, and damage value either. It could use the hero's values for this. The hero acts the same way with the mount as without the mount, though the mount may give some bonuses to certain things, like combat speed, combat movement, jousting bonuses, less cost to cast spells etcetera. These bonuses should depend on the mount.

Mounts should not have a base movement on their own. They should give a bonus to the Hero's movement. The mount is not a unit on its own.

Mounts should give a movement bonus for the hero on the adventure map.

Mounts:

Nightmare
HP: 110
Movement: +20%
Speed: +2
Specials:
1. Allows Hero to cast Terror.
2. All Death & Chaos spells costs 1 spellpoint less to cast.
3. Hero has no terrrain penalty on swamp.

Camel
HP: 100
Movement: +2
Speed: +1
Specials:
1. Hero has no terrain penalty in desert.
2. Hero gains first strike.

Zebra
HP: 80
Movement: +3
Speed: +1
Specials:
1. Hero gains +25% movement in Forests/Grasslands.

Pegasus
HP: 100
Movement: +4
Speed: +0
Specials:
1. Gives Hero 'Flying'
2. Enemy spells costs 2 additional spellpoints to cast.

Wolf
HP: 30
Movement: +3
Speed +1
Specials:
1. Hero gains no reataliation and strikes one additional time in melee.
2. This mount is limited to heroes of minute/small races.
3. Reduces all terrain penalties with 25%

Unicorn
HP: 110
Movement: +10%
Speed: +2
Specials:
1. The melee attack of the hero has a 10% chance to Blind.
2. All Blesses and Summon spells cost 2 spellpoints less to cast.

War Horse
HP: 200
Movement: +3 (combat only).
Speed: +0
Specials:
1. Gives the Heroes Jousting.
2. Gives the Hero first strike.
3. Hero gains +10% bonus to movement on grasslands.

I like your idea Alcazar. Here is my idea for might mounts.

Might - Mounts

Lvl 1: Wolf
Damage: 2-6
HP: 25
Attack: 19
Defence:17
Move: 16(+2 on adv. map)
Speed: Same as hero
Specials: -
Price: 500
Hero lvl: 2

Lvl 2: Worg
Damage: 10-16
HP: 60
Attack: 27
Defence:29
Move: 18(+3 on adv. map)
Speed: Same as hero
Specials: devouring(same as sea monster)
Price: 1300
Hero lvl: 6

Lvl 3: Sabertooth
Damage: 24-36
HP: 115
Attack: 37
Defence:33
Move: 20(+4 on adv. map)
Speed: Same as hero
Specials: 33% chance to do triple damage
Price: 2750 + 2 crystal
Hero lvl: 12

Lvl 4: Hypogrith
Damage: 44-56
HP: 230
Attack: 61
Defence:52
Move: 23(+5 on adv. map)
Speed: Same as hero
Specials: Lightning resistance, flying, no retaliation
Price: 6000 + 5 crystal
Hero lvl: 20

The damage done to the hero while he is on his mount should be divided 66% to the hero and 33% to the mount.

hummm... i didnt see anything for dwarves in these lists!

i propose a mountain Goat or Ram.

it can move over rocky terrain without penalty, and have a bonus for ramming an opponent...
