Grail basics 101

So you know the basic strats on a random, and you know how to use your diplo and you think u got it all figured out? Wrong. Now is the time to go GRAIL HUNTIN`!

The grail is a powerful item that when used for building a grail structure, gives you 5000 gold per day, 50% more creature growth, and a special bonus. Needless to say, this thing can make you win if you find it at the right time. The earlier in the game, the better.

So where is this wonderful item? Is it in a 5 black dragon utopia, or mayhaps in a far away land? Nope, its not guarded, and it can be anywhere on the map.. if youīre lucky, its right outside your main town. To find it, you need to locate the area it is in, and dig..

Grail hunting, chapter one:
"To locate the area itīs in"

To locate the area where the grail is, you need to take obelisks. Each time you take an obelisk, you get to see a new piece of the puzzle map. That map is a map of the area the grail is in. Once youīve uncovered the whole puzzle map, you see an X. On that X is where the grail is buried.

Many people think that you need to see the X to find the grail, but that is wrong. All you need it a clue to find the area, and then make a guess where the grail is, and dig near the center of that area.

The key to finding the area is the details. What kind of terrain do you see in the puzzle map.. do you see any rocks or trees? Maybe a volcano? How do they look in detail? Is there an area that matches the pieces that you have? Itīs all about the details. Trees look different, rocks look different. I myself need usually maybe 2 or 3 obelisks uncovered to find the area, if I have scouted that area with my scouts.

Chapter 2: "Digging for the grail".

When youīve located the area its time to start digging. Digging for the grail takes an entire day, so this is not something you want to do with your main, unless its absolutely neccesary. Use scouts, more than one, but not too many, because you donīt want to get too slowed down in your regular progress on the map while you dig. I myself like to use four.

So where do you dig? The grail is often in the centre of the area shown in the puzzle map, more often than not, it is one tile to the left and up from the center point..  Take my word for it, Im an expert grail digger. Now you know the secret too

Once you find the grail, take it to your main town as soon as possible, unless itīs late in the game and you want to build it in a conflux town to get all spells, but thatīs kinda cheesy anyway, and you need the 50% extra growth. It takes a build to build the grail, so you canīt build anything else in your town that day.

IMPORTANT!!  If you flee or surrender with the hero that carries the grail THE GRAIL IS LOST!!!

So donīt flee your heroes back, and make sure you can protect the grail. You have to walk it back to town, and keep it safe.. this is the game you are carrying on your poorly defended scout. Make sure he has a bodyguard, or even better, carry some troops on the hero that carries the grail. Not your main army, but enough to kill any normal scout. Of course of your opp knows youīre digging for it, you need to have everything there to defend the diggin site.

Then you simply bring it home, enter the town, and when the option pops up to "make this the permanent residence of the grail" you click "yes"

Viola, you are now the proud owner of your very own grail.

So to repeat this, we take the quick version:
1. Take obelisks.
2. Look on the details to find the area the grail is in.
3. Use 2 - 5 heroes to dig in the center of the area, starting in the center.
4. Find the grail, and carry it home.
5. Build it in your main town.

Now that you have the grail, you have 2 advantages.
1. You get ALOT more money.
2. You get alot more troops.

Advantage 1 can be used to get your troops bought faster than your opponent, wich gives you a troop advantage if you want to take him out early.

Advantage 2 gives you more troops over time, with can slowly tip the scales of power towards you winning.

These advantages combined gives you an edge that is not easily overcome. If your opponent has diplomacy or better stats, spells, or just more skill, you might still lose. But the grail will surely help you in your battle, so read this, and learn to find the grail. Like knowing how to fight in a battle, or how to build well, this is another skill in heroes that can make you win the game on a random map. Use it well

Now you know basic random strategy, you know diplomacy, and you know the grail.

The next course will be about advanced random strategies. Important spells, and ways to boost your army other than grail or diplo. Stay tuned.

Now go out there and find yourself a GRAIL!

To sum up this repetitive version that any newbie already knows is...

1. Find oblesiks
2. get back to town
3. you get more money and creatures which = pwnage
4. laugh and brag about how much your opponent sucks

This isn't possible in homm4 anymore, since you can only see the location after you've found all obelisks. Not necessarily all, because the mapmaker can let you discover the area after a certain amount of obelisks,eg 4/6.

Minor correction: you can build a town structure and then the grail structure on the same day but not vice-versa.

Hehe, just try

If you build, say, a mage guild you can still build the grail structure in the same town on the same day. If, however, you build the grail structure first, you cannot build the mage's guild (or any other structure). Make a test map and see what happens

Alright I will test it. But I have the feeling that if you have already built, and go in with the grail, nothing pops up, and you lose the 5k that u would have gotten.

If somebody beats you by using the grail to their advantage and you are better than them, it just means that you were stupid enough to not find it first. Having the grail on an internet game is a great was to add more suspense into the game. That way you have to worry about your opponent finding the grail first. Also if two players are evenly matched, the grail can be a great way to show who can navigate their way around the map better.

And just because someone has the grail it doesnt mean that they will beat you.....So nagafen, you can still beat bjorn without the grail, if your good enough

grail hunt is fun!

plus i'm hundred percent with dragonslayer on grail being a good thing on a multiplayer (given its placed somehwere in the common trotaround area, or where computer opponents live). not too unbalancing as well: after all, if grail is the sure guarantee of winning, why not put all your resources into getting it and neglect everything else? i bet it is possibly to overcommit, and after finding the grail find your empire in ruins and still lose. so maps with grail depend not on luck but on skill and finding the right balance between grailhunt and empirebuilding.

Its great after digging for many weeks, when you finally find the grail.

Which Grail do you guys think is the best?  I think the Tower Grail is the best.  It gives you the basics (5,000 gold and 50% pop) and it gives you two specials (view the entire world and get +12 knowledge on siege attacks)

Yeah, the Skyship is definetely cool. But Aurora is the absolute winner. Though it rarely comes into action
Btw I think that building Grail in a Tower is not a really good choice, unless the conditions are that you play for Tower or plan to use Tower's high-level creatures. Because otherwise you better use the +50% growth for something more valuable (Ahh... Imagine Grail in a Stronghold - 3 behhies a week, how superb! )

The grail is definately lost when it is "involved" in a lost battle (flee, surrender, die).
But no need to worry about the additional points in your highscore. The extra points are given for finding the grail by digging, not for building the grail structure in a town!

Grail and Highscore

Is this really true? In a recent multiplayer game I found the grail and handed it to an ally, whose hero townportaled (to save time) and built it in one of his cities. Imagine our disappointment, when the final score revealed, that the 25 point bonus for the grail was not applied.

Or is handing the grail to an ally treated like loosing it in a battle? This would mean, that you have to find the grail and still have it in your possession, when the game finishes.

Hint (you will know this): When checking the puzzle map in multiplayer, each ally gets a different view with different parts revealed or covered, although the number of pieces removed from the puzzle arethe same for every allied player.
