Serious Issue

Considering this is supposed to be a serious posting place, do we need the flood protect?

I dunno about everyone else but it can be a pain in the butt, if its to be moderated and none serious (toss's etc) posts deleted, then maybe removal of flood protection?

The flood protect is currently set per user. Not per user and forum.

Note: This was originally posted in the new "Myths and Heroes" Forums.

You probably need the flood protect. It's not there to slow down users who post normally and who follow the rules.

It's there to limit the damage which can be caused by spammers and malicious users.

I been damaged several times with the flood protection in trying to respond to different individuals when reading though.  It is inconvenient and a hassle, but still overcomable.  If I wanted to be a jerk and mess up threads I could still wack em real good with the current flood protection.

What do you mean? Flood protect doesn't stop reading the forum??? And you being a moderator have no flood protect anyway?

Posters can do some damage until one of the moderators notices what you are up to. After that it's end of your fun...

Flood protect is good!
The longer the better.....

I have seen dozens of threads where people wanted "no flood protect time" since I've been here.

Virtually all of them needed more flood protection!

Add another minute for everyone, works for me.......

My floodprotect is 3 times longer than most of you. But it does not cause a problem for me (other than editing as seen in this case ). I do not understand why ppl want it removed.

However, I DO believe that floodprotect for editing posts is.... ridiculous

I would also like to ask about another thing...

The possibility of moderating your own threads.

Dont get me wrong here now... but some threads you create can more or less only be done if you are to moderate them yourself to remove off topic replies.

Lets say that someone else would like to have made threads like truth thread and pic thread than hexa (which is a mod and therefor can remove/edit posts of his own...in case u didnt know that )...

I do believe that those threads never would have worked out then, also when making threads like motors betting threads in myths section or as i did when i created my football betting thread earlier atleast i felt that it would have worked out much better and being much easier to handle if you were given to moderate that thread of your own.

However, i dont suggest this for all threads since i reckognize it would not be used for the best of purposes always.

What i do want though is the possibility of raising this question for the one of the mods in respectively section and explain what you intend to do with your thread if given this special tool. It should be an easy thing to get, but in some cases its needed IMO.

I appreciate an answer as soon as possible.

/Stefan

PS. As some of you know ive brought up other ideas earlier aswell in tavern section, do you feel some of them should be brought up here for discussion aswell or were they just not answered for a reason?

Oh and one more thing

Now i dont know all the facts about the "Volcanic Wastelands" section but it seems to me that its not frequently visited or posted in?

I believe that that forum could be used in a better way.

Meaning: You remove the possibility of making threads there.

It would more be working as a place where moderators can move some of the threads that they think doesnt belong in their forum nor has any real purpose. And off course they do this with a reason at end of thread so people will understand why.

And off course if the creator of the thread or any other member think this is wrong can take it up to discussion. But ive seen many threads in different sections that really doesnt belong there, nor any other place really..so it could be moved to VV.

So what do i concider the gain here then?
*Moderators gets less threads to handle.
*The forums will be more appealing since the off topic useless threads wont be there anymore. Only the ones ppl do like.
*VV is likely to be visited more, the threads there wont just be endless spamming or similiar as has been the case when ive visited it a few times.
*It also sets a standard for what respectively forum thinks is tolerable.

/Stefan

EDIT: As said, some answers&opinions on these suggestions would be nice...

EDIT #2: As said two lines above

EDIT #3: OK am i the only one getting the feeling that this place isnt visited very often?

EDIT #4: guess so

About moving threads to the Volcanic Wastelands.

Personally, if I felt the urge to move any topic to the Volcanic Wastelands I'd probably decide to hit the delete button instead and take away the topic myself.

A fai guess is that the topic would be out dated (older than 1 week with any posts) the second I moved it. And why revive a dead topic?

Having thread creators modding their own threads are good as long as said thread creators don't have any problems with any other members in a thread. One of the reasons for mods is that they are neutral if conflicts arise.

I don't think it's workable to give members mod powers in each thread they have created. members already have one such power (won't mention which), and that one has been abused several times in the past.

I don't see why said members can't cooperate with the Mods, and having the Mods doing the necessary cleaning. If you have special rules you want to have for a thread it should be possible to agree with a mod to enforce those rules. And if you can't get a Mod to agree then perhaps it's an experiment best not done.

Actually I 96% of the time never log in when I am on unless I need to do something that requires it.  Thus, I find the flood protection at that time to be a pain....guess I will have to log in to avoid that if it works  The fun would never cease if someone considered it fun to be a lamer splattering garbage on the boards, but maybe I am ignorant.  I seriously think not though.  I really cannot explain however for the sake of training idiots to do the wrong thing if they were to read here.

thnx for comments

A few things though:

About VV...well do you think its used for any good now?

I agree that dead topics should be deleted, but the ones that aint dead and doesnt really belong in that forum nor any other could have a place in VV just to see if people still want to have it.

Its like a trash bin, you prolly will throw it away but you might just change your mind and keep it

As for moderation of own threads:

i think i mentioned that this was just for special occations and should not be used for every thread. And if i didnt that was how i meant it anyway

But as i see it if you are to keep a thread like you want it (no discrimination off course against any members as long as they post on topic) the smoothest way would be too moderating it by yourself. It will both save time for yourself as the poster and the moderator what would have too be in touch with thread owner for which posts to remove and so on.

So in atleast my eyes this would be the best way for things like this since its less time consuming, the author of thread gets it exactly like he wants too, no misunderstanding to be made between author and mod.

think about it, its a good idea...i promise

Members moderating their own threads can be good, but right now there is no support for it in the scripts, and I'm abit unsure about the size of the job.

However, helping members along and aiding in moderating threads is one of the tasks the moderator are here for.

You also have the problem that some members might take offence if another member edits one of their replies to insert a fun comment, a comment which might not be all that appreciated by the initial poster.

There are many members which can be trusted with this responsibility but it could be difficult for a mod to turn down a member which the moderator is doubtful about trusting.

Myself, I have editing someone's elses post as a last resort. I don't mind deleting posts, but editing is a very different thing.

I'm already using "average" status on this forum and the Altar to mark topics for eventual clean-out. Why move them to the VV? They'd only be out of context there.

If a member ask me to keep a close eye on his/her thread and moderate the spam or offtopic stuff I haven't turned them down sofar.

One should just put a little comment in the first post that the thread will be cleaned as on request of the tread starter!@

just my 2 cents...

Maybe the moderating your own thread could be something you can get when you receive 6 stars. I certainly think someone like The_Hydra could handle that. Perhaps even 5 star members.

Hmmm... one of the biggest downgrades of being a Moderator and participating in discussions is that I have the power to edit or delete other peoples posts, depending on my own subjective opinions about the material posted (in this case whatever I feel is bad or unsuitable material is removed).

If you actually are going to give and use such powers in a discussion then ask yourself this:

Is the discussion balanced, or tilted towards the opinion of the thread starter?
Would people appreciate the thread-starter editing or deleting their replies?

Myself, I would strongly dislike if I found out someone else had been editing any of my post for whatever reasons they may have and perhaps without my knowledge. ( Does the edited post reflect the view of the editor or that of the original poster?)

So for me the only time I edit a post is to delete it (or to edit away offensive language, though I'm likely to remove that post promptly anyway.)

There is a lot of people who take this more lightly than me, but edit or remove a post in some topics and you can find members asking what happened. Has happened to me a few times that members noticed threads becoming shorter.
