So I'm doing an essay on vampires

And after a bit of research I found out that apparently, in Slavic tradition, running backwards uphill with a lit candle and a turtle would ward off a stalking vampire.

Now that I think of it, if I was stalking someone and he started doing that, I'd probably give up too.

rob patterson is probably reading that and thinking "I need to do that!"

Bak, is this a essay on a particular vampire, or a look at the progression of vampires in popular culture? if the latter, please say you've included Hellsing?!

There are three phases

Dracula

in between (aka interview with the vampire, that's kind of schizophrenic in the portrayal)

twilight

Hellsing is the peppered madness that grasps Dracula and pours japanese animation over it.

No Hellsing is obscene. It has nothing to do with Vampires. It's just violence and to make the massacres cooler it's done by Dracula.

Now who you really should include is Nosferatu.

The essay is on vampires in general, in different cultures, through different ages etc but I plan to specifically take a look at the Eastern European sort, since that's the mythological homeland of the most widely known types (some people even claim that the word "vampire" is derived from Serbian "vampir"; don't know if that's true but it's certainly of Slavic origin and some of the earliest documented cases were from around here). Yeah, there'll be a chapter about popular culture too, and yes, help is appreciated.

It's supposed to be included in my - what's the word - baccalaureate? Whatever, there's this essay we need to write at the end of high school from a subject we choose, I chose English and happen to have an awesome enough professor to let me write about vampires.

It's supposed to be some 20-ish A4 pages long, so I've got quite some writing ahead of me.

Here's what I've got for now.

-Introduction
-The anatomy of horror (Description and common attributes)
-Lore of the ancients (early beliefs)
-Faith in the faithless (European beliefs from medieval times to the 18th century)
-Darkness revised (European beliefs in the 19th century, Bram Stoker)
-Explaining the nightmare (pathology and biological explanations)
-A legend without borders (Non-European beliefs)
-Recent nights (vampires in modern times and popular fiction)
-Final word

INTRODUCTION

Listen to them... Children of the night. What music they make.
-Bela Lugosi in the 1931 film adaptation of "Dracula" by Tod Browning

Since time immemorial, mankind has been frightened with the unknown – what it does not understand, comprehend, see in its entirety. Various spirits have risen to explain the world around us, deities to teach us about things we couldn’t fathom, and demons whose secrets most of us did not even wish to grasp. Yet of all the forces of nature, one looms over us as possibly the single most mysterious, intriguing, and chilling thought known to the human mind – death.
Death has stood throughout the ages as a huge shadow that serves to remind every living being of its place in the inscrutable chains of reality, and show how everything in this universe needs to have an end to clear a path for new beginnings – or, at the very least, that is all that we might be certain of. But humanity could never content itself with such a view. Indeed, every man, from the wisest of the aristocratic elders of ancient Greece to the most youthful of the children of today, has at some point played with thoughts of what might lay behind the gates of death.
Possible solutions and assumptions have been offered through philosophy, religion, and scientific research. Some have been accepted. Some weren’t. Some of them were used as an excuse for people to kill each other for thousands of years. But very few of them touch the delicate subject of coming back, and even fewer see that as a form of punishment, or a bad thing in general. Traditional beliefs, however, dating back to the pagan times of old, often mention these supposed occurances, and eagerly describe various creatures most widely known as the undead.
From the fleshless wraiths and poltergeists found in folk stories across the planet, restless spirits trapped roaming this world for an eternity, to mindless zombies hailing from the Haitian vodou tradition, few of these beings are more recognized or terrifying as those known as vampires. As cunning and, often, magnificent as they are diabolical, vampires have fascinated mankind throughout history. Despite opposing various churches, scientific explanations and even common sense, the belief in these creatures from beyond the grave has been preserved in some parts of the world until recent times, and the memories of this superstition are today more prominent than ever in popular culture.

I probably need a longer introduction though.

And stop laughing, I just started, all of it is subject to change.
