Dont misunderstand I meant that I think your calculations are incorrect on Fortress & you should try dif ways I just won my last game with it.
Trust me even though you dont have all 5 guilds there are ways to make fortress a force to reckond with.

I didnt misunderstand It is not a bad town but I mean it is not the best. Also mighty gorgons are my favorite of level 5. Instead of general I was talking about the level 1 and level 2 creatures.

I guess you have never been summoned to death.
And, as Attila says above, nearly all of the maps, either ToH or random, give you a secondary town which you can build your mage guild.
Mad, dont forget that:
Thunder <---- the master of single player
And as far as i know comp doesnt summon you to death and therefor he wouldnt know anything about it

Sorry if this question is a very silly one...
But what's that 'summoning to death'?

Well, well, it looks like our master tossers like to cast Summon Earth Elemental on the first round of battle no matter who or what they are facing, only to see that opposite barbarian with Stronghold army casts mass haste. Hasta la vista Earth Elementals!
Yeah, I know that Summon Elementals are worth casting at later or middle stages of combat when you practically have casted all of your useful mass spells or you have only some sorry remnants of troops remaining..... or you have some sucky mage who has only Summon Elemental spells as fifth level spells, no useful mass spells and have skipped learning fourth level spells.
Aculias, those are just rumours.
Btw, Stuffed, the title you have given me is amusing. Maybe I will change my status or signature to it.

Units:
1. Gnoll Marauders - good soldiers and vast in numbers obly a bit slow.
2. Lizardmen - weak shooters but sturdy.
3. Dragonflies - very good. Sturdy, fast, a really useful special which always kicks in. Good for hit&run and for scouting.
4. Bazilisks - a solid unit. Slow but that can be fixed with haste. And a good special.
5. Mighty Gorgons - the best level 5 there is!!! A wall of flesh. Very solid, packs a hard punch and their special is a killer especially against level 7.
6. Wyvern Monatchs - not very good. Fast, deals good damage but fragile (the only fortress unit which is fragile).
7. Chaos Hydras - good. Sturdy, powerful but slow so needs haste. Very good against AI or unperceptive oponents.
Special Buildings:
All add even more solidness to the troops making them moving rocks.
Mage Guild:
As most here noticed it should be level 5.
Overall: a very good castle with very sturdy units (except wyverns) and very cheap comes to my top of the list. A bit dependable on haste.
