Editing Random Maps

This thread is to help people (including me) understand how to edit in bonuses for random maps

I have tried to edit bonuses in using the map editor from saved games, but i always get an error.  Stating something like the file version isnt a proper format for the map editor to work.  These maps have the file extension gm2 or gm1

Everytime a new random map is generated it is created in the folder random maps  These maps have an extension of h3m.  These are the ones i am able to edit. (simply changing the extensions gm1 and gm2 to h3m doesnt work.  I still get an invalid format error)

So what i do is:
1. delete all maps in the random map folder (so i dont get confused as to which is which)
2. generate a random map
3. open the generated map in the random map folder with the map editor
4. edit in the bonuses that are required
5. save the map with the changes
6. rename the map to whatever i want and copy it to the maps folder (it has the extension h3m but is still loadable)
5 launch heroes and choose new game. Then pick the game i just edited.

This makes the map with the bounuses edited in available to play but it still is called random. All settings like town choice and heroe and difficulty have to be done but the bonuses added are still in the map

I was just wondering if anyone else knows how to do it.  Or if there is an easier way.  Or if this way has some problems with it.

Any thoughts would be welcome, especially since clans is coming up

Third person host is ideal since he will be the only one to get a look at the map.

The reason i posted this is because kuma asked me to generate one for him and deemer but i did not know how to do it.   The steps listed above is what i have come up with but im sure there is an easier/better way of doing it.

And yes i know we have a save to finish and i will look for u online when im on

really its the best way... if third person is known and trustful member.. i think in clans we have to arrange a 3. person host lists for security

Grendal, I suspect your basic method is pretty good - basically what happens is that the random map editor generates a normal map file (which are always .h3m) and then you start playing a game off it (game files save info like hero movement and stuff that the map file won't need.)

You don't need to delete all the files in your random map foler if you don't want to - just move them into a temporary folder if you want them back later!

tossers

this is what you do to make it fast:

open map editor, make a new map.

Then you can choose to make it random generated based on the rmg file your using and then you can edit it right away.

So much faster and easier.
