Oh no! (Help, anybody?)
Um, first - hello.
I am working on a HOMM IV campaign, which is about 2/3 finished, and I just realized the editor won't let me change the ownership of a carryover hero (other than at the beginning of a scenario). Is there a way to do it from a triggered event? Would some patch I may not have solve this? Or does anybody know a workaround?
Would be thankful for any advice, as I can't think of a way to redesign the campaign without throwing half of it away and coming up with a new story...

Unfortunately you can't change the color of carryover heroes. That's because you can only change the color of an army and not individual heroes, which is all carryovers are. What you can do is somehow force the player to move that hero into a town or garrison and change the structure's color, but that only works if both the starting and ending colors are human, leaving the starting color as nonplayable. I'm not even sure that's possible in a campaign.
You might want to look into using the WoW editor's additional feature, which has something in the campaign properties tabs that does something similar to what you want, but I've never tried it and I'm not sure how it works. If you've played the WoW campaigns, they did something like that where you choose which side to play in later maps.
In any case, don't give up. There is some way to make it work.

Thanks a lot for the tips. The WoW additions would require me to split the thing into two campaigns (which is good to know for future reference, but not a viable solution for me right now). However, it seems I might be able to do it using garrisons, with only a few small adjustments. It will look ugly for sure, but it should work.
