Here's five cents...

My top wish for Heroes 5 is a game editor, similar to what Civ 3 has. It's not so much that I think I'd use it, but there are always balance issues so I might. Mainly it's just such a great way to make a whiner shut up. "I hate X whine whine whine." Response: "You can change that if you hate it so much." Sometimes they'll come back with "Oh. I didn't know that." but more often they just go away.

Keep the heroes on the battlefield and keep something similar to the level progression and advanced classes of H4. It kicks ass.

That said, I'd like the battlefield to be a bit simpler, as in more like chess or Titan. Preferably a hex map and I'd like the H3 status line brought back so I can scroll up and see what exactly happened, like who has a morale bonus etc. Titan's (an old board game) model would be excellent, actually. It sort of bugs me how in all the HoMM games a stack with a single unit takes up exactly as much room as a stack with 1000 units. Either make the units bigger, like battalion size, or make them single units, like a bandit is a bandit and a dragon is a dragon and they both take up a slot in the party/army. On the other hand, maybe battles could be large scale and real time.

If you can't have decent AI make the maps reflect that decision. See Disciples 2. If the pretence of good strategic AI must be kept up (using maps more suited to multiplayer for single player, for instance), have the computer cheat like crazy. Like have AI player cities begin with extra troops and buildings depending on difficulty level.

Another thing that was great about Civ 3 was that the developers kept an eye on how people were exploiting the game and shut down loopholes in their patches.

I really like the emphasis on heroes in HoMM 4. I liked how they could work together. I also like how artifacts were less powerful. HoMM 3 had some insane artifacts, not just the combination artifacts but ones like the Orb of Inhibition and the Angel wings. I especially like how there were fewer useless spells and artifacts, just as there were fewer insane ones.

Oh yeah, HoMM 4's luck and morale system was pretty good, too.

I like the specialised schools of magic but it might be better if there were some guaranteed spells, at least at the lower levels. With the Life spells for instance in HoMM 4 it's possible to get screwed and not get Bless and Bind Wound in your level one mage guild. It might be better if you were sure of what you'd get or could decide on one or more of the spells via research.

It would be good if support heroes played more of a role in HoMM 5 than they did in HoMM 4. In HoMM 3, they had more to do and had more benefits. They visited creature generators, windmills, moved armies, and had specific benefits like scholar or +350 gold. Bringing back scholar would be a possibility because it's a pain to have to haul a main spell caster clear across the map to learn new spells.

Well, I have a lot of other ideas but I suspect I'm just going on for no real reason.

I just had an idea about hiring heroes. One way would be not to hire them at all but to generate them from your available creatures. This could tie in with creature experience, like how units obtained experience in the Panzer General series. Say your army contains a unit of 100 dwarfs, 100 halflings (missile troops), and 10 golems, all brand new with 0 experience. You fight the first couple of battles and each battle there's a chance that your troops will gain an experience level. The bonus of an experience level would be, say, plus one missile offence for the halflings, plus one defence for the dwarfs, and plus 5% magic resistance for the golems. So the experience bonus is nice, but not overwhelming. However, in addition to the experience combat bonus, there's a chance that the troops will generate a leader in each battle, and that chance is greater for experienced troops. So, after a few battles, there's a chance that you could develop a halfing hero, who might have stealth skills; or a dwarf, most likely to be in the fighter classes; or a golem specialist, a creature (drawn from the races associated with your faction) who can cast spells and also has the natural ability to make the golems fight better and/or increases their production. You could turn down any hero that comes up, and it should probably cost a nominal amount to outfit your new hero.

What's cool about this idea is that you could have heaps of different hero base types, one for every creature in the game. Also, you'd have a chance of generating quite powerful hero types later on after you've started using higher level creatures. Like you could have a dragon hero, or maybe a hero just associated with dragons, like a Black Dragon Master or a Dragon Rider.

Because this could be annoyingly random for some players, it might be a good idea if it was possible to hire customised heroes. But instead of getting exactly what you want, you'd recruit for heroes: send out units, offer rewards, let it be known that you're looking for a particular type of hero. Heroes could be won by completing quests, too. This way players could get heroes pretty much like what they want but it would be a lot more expensive than taking and developing ones they generate.

Oh, but there is a reason. I really enjoyed reading your ideas (although some of them aren't new) and would appreciate if you went on. I'm sure others are reading this, too, even if nobody has bothered to comment yet.

There are already dedicated topics for discussing much of what you mention here.

Your topic name is poorly choosen and the things you take up are too scattered.

There are also a number of very good topics in which members give their vision future installments in the series.

My advice to you is to use the Altar index to find some good old thread on topics you want to say something about and then respond to the ideas presented there.

Selecting a good name for a topic and focus on a particular subject in a topic are two critierias I use for inclusion in the Altar index.

Yeah, Civ 3 had good editor, bu I don't think it would fit in H5.

P.S. I'm sorry for not genious question, but why did you call this thread five cents.
