Compare Homm to Age of Wonders/Disiples

I own Homm4 as well as Age of Wonders and Disiples 2. I enjoy them all but my favorite would be AoW. The depth of strategy is very engaging in AoW but overall the combat in Homm4 is more fun. By the mid map in AoW I usually quick combat most battles but in Homm4 I do every battle up to the end. Disciple would come in third. Great strategy and artwork but battles are kind of a rock paper scissors thing.
You either win decisively or get smoked.
I'm also looking forward to Warlords4. Frankly ever since Masters of Magic I've been a turn based fantasy strategy nut.
Opinions?

The multiple upgrade feature in Disciples is what I found most remarkable about this game. AoW1 (haven't played AoW2) impressed me with the possibility to have massive battles, like sieging a large town (4 hexes = max. 4 defending armies) from all sides (max. 6 attacking armies if I recall

Yes you could get some pretty huge battles in
AoW but it's pretty ponderous. Or do I mean tedious?

I agree with all of you!

Age of Wonders 2 would be a perfect game if they introduced the skill system of Heroes IV.

I find it strange that Disciples have so few and simple RPG features since it is an RPG game as much as it is a TB strategy. Fantastic graphics, story and atmosphere, of course!

I haven't played AoW 2 but I enjoyed D2 for quite a while. The AI in both games was pretty good in battles but poor in strategy. IMO D2's mapmakers did a better job taking that fact into account. I think the AI cheated more in D2, a good thing IMO. D2 is a really good looking game, too. Huh, now I want to play it. D2 is also better suited to multiplayer than H4.

A funny thing is that while D2 isn't much better than H4 if at all, I didn't notice their message boards being infested with gasbags whining endlessly about it all.

Probably because expactations were higher for HoMM4. The first Diciples pretty much caught everyone by suprise while we were waiting for AoW2. The Heroes series has been around awhile and in my opinion getting better with each installment until 4 which every one seems to feel was a disapointment. I'm enjoying HoMM4 but I see it's flaws.
I don't get people who hang around a board to slam a game over a year after it's release though.

disciples 2 is fun =p

'cause u get to upgrade your creatures! it takes a ton of strategy imo. because if you lose just 1 of your really crappy zombies or something early in the game, it cantotally mess up your strategy.

and AOW2 is awesome!!!    that is one of my favorite games. tons of races so many different ways to play especially with the customize wizard idea.   making water dwarves  and undead with life magic...  the possibilities are awesome.  but the super hero issue still needs to be addressed.

Well put. HOMM3 was bagged unmercifully when it came out by the H2 purists. H4 gets the same, or more of the same, treatment.
Please everyone, when H5 comes out just give it a chance to grow on you before you make a judgement.

speaking of Disciples, graphics are the worst. skill system too. speaking of AoW: never played because I hate games with tactics and gameplay like these.

Heroes of Might & Magic was always the best turn-based strategy game in the world!

AoW doesn't seem to be as good as Heroes. But Disciples2, that's a great game. Great graphics, great story, very nice races and overall a very good game. Maybe not better than H4, but at least as good.
