url: Just a link, no pictures displayed.
tag: A thumbnail of the image, and if you click on it, it'll dispaly the full size picture. I don't think tags work here... (At least I haven't gotten it to work yet.  )

You can use various image editors except ms-paint. Try a trial version of EximiousSoft GIF Creator here. Just mark the areas that are to be transparent and press delete. "Magic Wand Selection" and "Edit\Invert" may be very helpful.
Personally I used MatLab.

I'll add a bit of clarification on that:
When the people that designed .GIF files did that they included an option where you could designate a certain color as the "background" color. In other words you can pick a set of pixels that will be invisible and show the background. It only works on .GIF's and also pretty much any program that deals with .GIS's will be able to give you the transparency.
It doesn't work on JPG's or TIF's though.
