Mother Tathlorn's
This will be a test case role-playing thread. I will re-post what I said on another thread about what is to go on here.
I will be starting a thread...which will depict a scene with some characters in it. This will be a test for the role-playing forum. Keep in mind that you can enter this scene as your own character or take on one of the characters already there. It is best to speak as this person...although you can certainly describe other people and things.
This scene can go anywhere the current poster wants. He can take a tavern scene outside or start a fight or just talk...maybe there is a quest. The people can be good or evil. You can't limit this too much or make too many rules..and it will get out of hand. If this happens you start a new thread and try to do it right. If someone is just coming in and causing trouble tell me and I will tell them to stop or I will delete their part of the thread.
Please be considerate to other people's characters and don't just go around killing people for no reason. Try to simulate a scene or group of scenes. And be creative...you can be a human, a wizard, an elf, or whatever.
I will re-post this info at the start of the thread where the setting will be described. I will only start the thread and I may or may not be involved later...it is up to the rest of you to keep it going. And if you want you may start your own as well.
The name of the thread is "Mother Tahlorn". It is from a forgotten realms (D&D) module. If you have played it or read it don't feel you have to play it any specific way. Also, just because it is from a forgotten realms module does not mean it has to be about the forgotten realms.
Here is the setting:
You have received an invitation that reads, "In light of your recent adventuring success and the notoriety you have achieved, you are cordially invited to a gathering of adventurers at Mother Thathlorn's House of Pleasure and Healing. Festivities begin tomorrow night at sunset. Activities will include feasting, dancing, gaming, and entertainment in a variety of appealing forms. The cost to you is nothing save the pleasure of your presence, and your friendly conversation with various notables from the city of Waterdeep. Pease sned your response back to me with the messanger.
Best wishes,
Mother Tahlorn. "

Arrival at Mother Tahtlon's
"Mother Tahlorn's house of pleasure and healing is probably the most famous of waterdep's several festhalls. A baroque, five-storied structure, Mother Tathlorn's establishment has been hung with garlands of flowers and greenery for the occasion. The way along Gem Street leading up to the house has been lit with torches that provide soft light, reflecting off the towering walls of Castle Waterdeep, which stands nearby.
You are not the first to arrive. Serveral parties of well-groomed nobles, resplendent in rich velvets, brocades, and cloth of gold, walk along Gem STreet or loiter around the house's entrance, attended by servants of many races. You seee other adventurers arriving. You recognize the beautiful Loene of the Company of Crazed Ventueres; the stern Velkor Minairr, leader of the Bloodaxe Mercenaries; and Darrstul, a rogue in service to the Hunt. Some of you feel somewhat sligted that such insignificant individuals have been invited to the same feast as yourself, while others feel incredibly humble to be in such distinguished company. Marshaling your resources to meet the cream of Waterdeep society, you enter the building.
A stout, mature, and charming woman, Mother Tathlorn greets you all by name and urges you to partake of the available refreshments. The interior has been compeletely redecoraated. The bar has been removed, and tables added to accomodate the crowd. Servants scurry here and there, and everywhere is the muted din of conversation."

Huh.
Well... I've never done this before, but I will give it a try.
____________________________________________________________________
I am Tesch'k the goblin mage. Many are surprised to see a goblin amongst the ranks of so called great adventureres and many turn me an evil eye. One bold fool even goes so far as to try to crush me, claiming a goblin scout slipped through the doors. He obviously was in no mood to check my invitation.
With a few low words and a wave of my hand he is knocked from his feet and lands through a table. No one doubts my credibility now. I can hear a few mumbled "damn goblins" in the crowd. I have never been known to stick up for my own pathetic race, but I have also never backed down while trying to prove my worth.
My boldness in coming here slips after that little endevor. I go to the bar and order 5 rounds of 'goblin blood ale'. That should be enough to give me a light buzz. The fool next to me slips from his stool. Heh, humans have never been able to hold there ale.
Just as I start to feel light headed I hear a the silence in the room as someone enters. I have a bad feeling about this. I turn around and see someone I hoped I would never have to see again....

"Teshik!" a voice booms out, as the goblin at the bar winces at the mangling of his name. The crowd parts as if by magic as the owner of the voice lumbers through the crowd. At first, he seems to be a rather unremarkable mountain dwarf, broad shouldered, stocky limbed, clad in leather and chainmail, with a massive single bitted axe hooked over his shoulder. Then the scale sinks in. THIS "dwarf" is well over 6 feet tall. In his wake come several grim, hardbitten soldiers of various races each bearing the thunderbolt blazon of the Children of the Thunder, a noted Northern mercenary cavalry company.
The pipe bouncing in the "dwarf's" beard sends out a noxious cloud of smoke as its owner approaches the bar. He seats himselve next to the goblin, the chair creaking nervously under his bulk. A delicate goblet of silver filagree disappears into his hand as he grins at the goblin with a wolfish gleam in his eyes.
"I thought when they let me in they were scraping the bottom of the barrel... maybe I was wrong.." His laughter booms like a Northern avalanche.

A green haired, pale skinned elf turns at the sound of the dwarf's voice and walks over. Spying the goblin aside him she gives a quiet laugh. "A dwarf and a goblin having a cosy chat in Madam Tathlorns?" She nods and fingers the sword at her hips. "Perhaps you two characters would care to buy a girl a drink?" She introduces herself as Loene, member of the Crazed Adventurers Guild, a sect of warrior women based in the northern part of town. "Despite all this," she says waving around at the setting, "I sense that the Madame has more in mind for us than a pretty gathering. I did not come here for pleasantries, I came here to see what that old healing hag has to offer in terms of gold." She smiles as the two chuckle but still her hand remains upon her sword. A gigantic dwarf and shorter than average goblin. Maybe it would pay to stick around, surely these two alone would prove to be worth it.

The dwarf's booming laugh cuts across the room again."Well met, Loene! I am Hjaltulfr Hjalmarsson, of the Children of the Thunder." He slaps the bartop, causing reverberations along its entire length, and extends a massive hand.
"And as to the possibility of gold...well, me and the troops have learned that you can't eat it, so dig in while you can!! I'm sure our host will inform us of the reason for this gathering in her own sweet time!"
A quick series of grins light up the faces of the troops watching his back.

At that moment a hooded figure entered the house. The same guy who got a black eye from trying to stop Tesch´k and appeares to be some sort of a guard approached it and grabbed its hand. The figure slowly turned its face to him, and pushed him lightly away. The guard backed off immediately, turning white (even that black eye of his) and focusing his look in the opposite direction; as if the figure´s eyes were so bright to burn him from inside.
However, the figure´s face was pitch black and the long hood, cast its shade over it - so there was nothing to be seen except a few silver - like hairs, almost white.
It wore a dark cloak, from which a few slender arrows made of ithrull and a quiver covered in strange elven runes sticked out. In its right hand it held a giant elven cherry - wood bow.
In a few light steps the figure reached the bar in an utmost silence. With a sudden move, it stripped the hood and behold! it´s face was truly black, but it was not void as many feared. This creature was a drow.
Madame Tathlorn, who has been fidgeting all this time, now rose up, with exhilarating expression on her face: "Dorinillion!, you made it! This is a true relief."
Dorinillion laughed: "It is a merry meeting, though the huor may be dark. Or not? But, I guess I am to find that out later, as others. You know I wouldn´t miss your pegasus potpie for anything." He gave her a hug.
"Of course... Excellent, excellent - only a few more people have to arrive, then you´ll hear everything."
The atmosphere flared up again. As Dorinillion sat down to eat, his eye cought the sight of a goblin. He knew him well: it was Tesch´k, the goblin mage. Beside him sat a stout - looking dwarf, with a few fellowmen at his side; these were the Northern Mercenaries. He just stared at Tesch´k with a burning gleam in his eyes. Tesch´k seemed somewhat frightened as well as huddled and didn´t say anything. There was something between these two in the past, this could not have missed an elven sight. Something that may just explode.
But Dorinillion just kept eating, when his look turned to a pale - skinned elf, with unusual green hair. She approached Tesch´k and the dwarf and seemed to have said something to them that eased the straining between these two. Tesch´k asked for drinks.

Loene almost draws her sword as she spies the drow enter Madame Tathlorns, but after a moment's thought, she relaxes her grip. Part drow herself, she finds it easy to forget her dark elf heritage. It is a part of her she doesn't particularly like.
"You," she says, nodding towards Dorinillion's way. "Madame Tathlorn sure knows the good from the bad and the ugly. I heard of you before, aren't you Dorinillion of the west? The one that slew a whole company of the King's guards in the village of Mallyre? Perhaps you are trying to live up to the fame of a particular Do'Urden..." She smiles wryly. "Let me tell you that the first Watergate militiaman to spy you here will have you arrested at once. The bounty upon your head is enough to make a King from a peasant..."
She notes the drow's furtive glances at Tesch'k and the goblin's return scowls.
Loene prays that the Madame hasn't watered down the liquor. A drunken drow and goblin were apt to be too drunk to fight come time to leave.
She only hopes that they would not be too drunk to walk out of here.

At first, Dorinillion seemed somewhat surprised at Loene´s remark, but quickly got his grip. He stood up and headed towards the elf looking slightly threatening, but at this Hjaltulfr Hjalmarsson, the sturdy dwarf blocked his way. Already his hand lay on a single bitted axe.
Dorinillion turned, thrusting his gaze through him.
"Dwarf! You´d better remained sitting, lest I..."
But at this madame involved: "Stop this nonsense. We are all friends here. Cool your spirits and realax. This IS the house of pleasure and healing!"
"I simply wish to have a word with a girl.", countered Dorinillion.
"It´s all right.", said Loene. At the this the dwarf backed away, leaving the two.
"Know I not well the likes of you Loene?! But, must you be so loud?! And if you know me that well, then you also know that i´ve been through thick and thin, and that coming here scares me not at all. But, let me give a friendly advice to you - speak not overmuch about things you know of only as tales told by the fire in the peaceful nights. You may find horror lurking there. But come now, is it not time we heard something of the Madame?"

all of the sudden, a strange green orb enters the room, and goes over to where the others are... the drow did not seem suprised... "ah, is that you, Alamir?" then, the orb exploded, filling the room with light... in the place the orb was, a grey gnome clad in robes of deep blue, a svirfneblin, was standing. "Right as usual, Dorinillion!"
"how are things up in the sky palace, ali?""just lovely, thanks!" as he looks around, he sees some familliar faces...
he has seen them all before... "ah, SHE is happy with you all for your achievements... it is not often that dwarves, goblins, or drow, for that matter, get praised by the guardian of nature...."

Tesch'k eyes the group that starts to surround him suspiciously. The tall-folk have never taken to his kind well. He hops down from his stool and eyes Alamir, the grey gnome. With a flick of his wrist a wave of light emits from his hand and the plant behing the bar withers and dies. "I have no love for nature, and it has no love for me." There is a tension in the room as Tesch'k eyes Alamir.
Alamir does nothing and lets him be. He must of known this was a test to determine his charactor.
"Bah." is all the goblin can get out of his mouth as he begins to walk away. He had to get away from that dwarf again. If it wasn't for him he would still be living quietly in his own wizard tower in the upper dale. Because of him, everyone knows his name. Luckily, most people have the habit of smashing goblins before bothering to ask there names. He didn't trust drow anymore than he trusted his own race, but he trusted them more than normal elves.
Before he can take a few steps, Madame Tathlorn speaks over the audiance, obviously with help from a spell. Before the words were even out of her mouth, Tesch'k had the strange feeling he might need his old 'friend' Hjaltulfr and his new allies on this mission. After all, he was just a diminutive goblin...

Mother Tathlorn, although peaceful and calm has the telltale signs of weariness etched into her usually smooth features.
"I have summoned you all here for a reason, a reason that goes against my better judgement, but alas, I see no other way around it."
Loene straightens her back and casts a swift glance at the others. It is good that the madame is able to hold their attention.
"My daughter has met with ill-fate. The day before last she was discovered in her room..." Tears well up in her eyes and her voice quivers for a moment. "Dead."
The frown upon Loene's face is instant and she can hear the gasps of the others. The frown quickly turns to a look of shock as Mother Tathlorn clenches her fists and ploughs on.
"I know not who has committed this foul act against me and my house... but I have sworn to the gods themselves that I shall not let the perpetrator rest..." She takes another deep breath and steadies herself.
"My friends, I have come to know you all as more than the sum of your parts. I know that what I am to ask of you will be difficult, perhaps impossible, but I see no other way."
Loene steps forward and lays a consoling hand upon Mother Tathlorn. "Never you mind, healer," she says. "You have saved my life more than once, and the life of your daughter I would gladly sacrifice my own for. We shall find the one who killed her, on our honour, and bring them to you for justice."
A tear trickles down Mother Tathlorns cheek. "Do not bring them to me good child," she says after a moment. "I am the mother of healing... what I would do to the one who has killed my daughter would be unspeakable. I would never be a healer ever again."
Loene nods. "Then the justice is ours."
Mother Tathlorn nods slowly. "I am not sure who or where the killer has gone, whether he be in these walls or long gone from Waterdeep, perhaps you'd best see the militia first and query them on who has passed through the gates in recent days."
Loene nods and turns to the rest of them. Her face is grave and her voice, even darker. "Then pay the Militia a visit we shall!"
This time, the sword is fully drawn from it's scabbard and the fire of madness burns deep within Loene's green eyes.

"Easy, elfling...there'll be time enough for that when we find the misbegotten son of a ..." The humor is gone from the eyes of the massive mercenary, then flashes back for an instant "I was going to say, 'drow', but that wouldn't be too nice. My apologies, Dorniland." Tesch'k winced. Would this great oaf ever learn to pronounce a name not in his own tongue?
The delicate siver goblet, now a crushed wad, drops unnoticed to the floor as Hjaltufr turns to the nearest of his troopers. "Fox! Take the men and ride back to camp. Have Xenos contact the Baron, and let him know I may be a bit delayed. If you don't hear from me in 2 days, Fiacha is to take all but 'A' troop, and proceed with the contract. Then, get down to the docks, and see if either the Elven Blade or the Mara is in, just in case. Well? You have your orders..move it!"
He turns back, and his gaze sweeps over elf, drow, gnome, and goblin. His sweeping bow is surprisingly graceful. "I'm in. I have no doubt some of you possess marvelous and subtle powers, but there's always something to be said for brute force and bad manners in the proper place." The mask of good-natured simplicity drops back over his features as his voice thickens into a deep Northern burr. "Naow, shall we be off tae see what those lily handed kerns of the Militia have tae say fur thaeselves?"

For a second the world freezes. They are far enough away from the main part of town that help was unlikely to come. No one moves until.......
....Tesch'k falls on the ground laughing. "Hahahahahah!" Everyone is stunned at his reaction. Trying to breathe, he says,"Who are deez drow imposters?" "We are in the middle of a field and they are wearing all black? Hahahahaha!"
The others obviously don't share his incredulity. They see these foes as a real threat. The way one twirls his two sticks tied by a chain obviously is a skilled warrior.
One moves with a deft of hand a flings a dart at Tesch'k. It catches in his cloth and he stops laughing. Crossing his fingers in an intricate circle, he says a few archaic words and his skin turns as strong as stome right before a ninja in the trees above slams a long, curved blade on his shoulder. It bounces off. Tesch'k quickly turns around and stabs the man with the magically hidden daggers that he keeps on his right glove like claws. They allow him the freedom to fight, while still using his hands to cast spells.
Over his shoulder he can hear the war cry of a Dwarf as he slams into something fleshy, probably a ninja. This could be a while, he laments to himself, as he turns to face another of these drow wannabees.......

right before the last of the ninja is slain, he takes flight in his raven form and flies away. "how come you dont even have a scratch, ali?" said Leone, for everyone seemed to have many cuts." because i too have invisible suprises!" at that moment, he appears with a green aura around him that gives as much protection as a full suit of armor, while not hampering his movements. he also has a belt and two shoulder straps. on the belt, was a long blade and a short sword. on the first strap, there was dozens of flasks with strange colored liquids- poisons. on the other strap, there were thirty throwing daggers. on his wrist, there was a jagged claw jutting out at his hand, so wgen he punches someone, they get slashed."hehe, busted!"

Casually wiping the blood and bits of brain off his axe on the clothing of one of the fallen attackers, Hjaltulfr looks about the ring of his new comrades. None seem more than scratched. Thankfully, a quick check of the enemy weapons shows no sign of any poisons on their blades, and none of their throwing weapons seemed to have hit home.
His laugh rumbles across the night. "I dinnae suppose we've a necromancer in the house? That's the only way these puir fools'll be for answering any questions ..if we stick enow bit's o them taegether!"
In spite of his outward amusement, his heavy brows knit together in thought. These 'ninjas' were good ...just not good enough. Whoever sent them was certain to try harder the next time. His thick fingers stroked across the runes in the head of his dwarf-forged axe. Time enough to worry about that later. For now, there were questions to be asked of the Militia, and by the gods of his fathers, there had better be some answers, or things could get ugly. Somewhere deep inside him, a great shaggy head nodded in agreement.

But not all was so.
"Darned ninjas! Darned Lin-Kui and their katanas! Darn them all! Eirra dón häl!", exclaimed Dorinillion angrily, holding to a nasty cut on his left shoulder. The latter was some elf-swearing.
"You know Alamir, I could truly use some of the gadgetry you got there. My bow helps me not in close combat. All I can rely on is this dagger.", he unsheathed a dagger with a red gem thrust in midst of the handle, quite big, its silver blade shining in the sunlight. A halfling or a dwarf could even use it for a sword. He tapped the dagger carefully, as if not to cut himself.
"I can use it well, though. I just redirected the deadly shot aimed for my abdomen. But these katanas are often poisoned and this being almost always untracable. That´s my problem, to be certain, I´ll have to find some irhill to clean the wound. If there be any near Watergate.", he paused for a moment, thinking.
"Yes, yes there is some if I remember correctly. You just go ahead and pay the militia a visit. I shall meet you there afore the sun sets."
In a few steps he vanished out of sight.
However, the company went on, most of them thinking about the strange attack they were part of. What was it all about?! How could they know of the intentions of a company?! And who are *they*, anyway? None could so far answer these questions. But they were all alert.
Soon they reached the Militia station-house. This was an old, rambling cottage, near a well at the foremost end of Watergate. The sign over it stated: M li ia, obviously half-way destroyed by the rain or whatever.
There was a man, sitting right next to the doors. Or lying would be more appropriate, since he was in the world of dreams. Seemingly for quite a time; he didn´t even notice them.
They entered the cottage and came upon another man, but this one much fatter. He covered his head with a hat made of peculiar kind of straw or something and was snoring heavily. He seemed like a main character in the station.
Hjaltulfr bumped him a little on the shoulder with his heavy fist.
The man started and jumped to his feet completely bemused, desperately looking for his weapon, whatever it be. He was not so tall, but strong and fat, probably from resting here all the time.
"What ye be wantin´?", he shouted angrily.

While the Miltiaman stood looking baffled at his sudden transformation, he couldn't help noticing the gleam in Hjaltulfr's eyes. Then he caught sight of the worn thunderbolt insignia on the medallion around the burly "dwarf"'s neck. He swallowed hard. His eyes slid over the rest of the small band facing him. Perhaps this would have been a good day to visit his cousins..his distant cousins..his VERY distant cousins.
Somehow, the smile that grew on the big axeman's face wasn't very reassuring. Neither was the rumbled "Thank ye. Naow it be a bit more fair ... I maun even break a wee bit o' a sweat."
