It sounds like at least one of you is playing behind a router, so this causes problems (due to closed ports the game needs to transfer data from one pc to the other) playing through tcp/ip.
Solution:
Go to gameranger.com and create an account (for free) there.
You can open a room there and start playing from that room, very easy. No problems...

Quote: Hello, I am having a problem that i have been researching and cannot find any info on, me and my brother have tried ALOT of things to play Heroes3 online, we have used hamachii, gamespy, and gameranger but, everytime I get an unknown error message:
could not save game as "RMT*WOSC.BIN".
then this pops up:
error opening file ./DATA/RMT*WOSC.BIN.
Quote:
Quote: Could not save game as
"RMT*CWSC.BIN".
what exacly i should do to fix this problem?
I'm having the same problem. When my friend begins the scenario, my game crashes and I receive a message like this one, except its another file:
"RMT*AVSC.BIN"
I also saw on the web other people having the same issue and they got even another file with a different name.
I had the same error but I managed to fix it. This was an interesting bug, because my friend didn't get the error even though we had exactly the same version and patches of HOMM3.
So, I finally had time to fire up my debugger and see what's wrong... It turns out that HOMM3 generates a three letter 'Unique System ID' which is used to identify players when playing online. Also, the ID is used as a part of filenames, so if it contains special characters (such as *, <, ; etc) then the game fails to create those files and the game won't start. This Unique System ID is stored in registry and can be modified to something that does not cause problems.
FIX FOR ./DATA/RMT*SC.BIN ERRORS
1. Open regedit (Windows button + R -> regedit)
2. Select the first 'folder' on the left (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT) and open find box (Ctrl + F or Edit -> Find)
3. Tick 'Value' and search for 'Unique System ID'. Case sensitive, without quotes...
4. Change the found value to something else (3 characters and alphanumeric)
Note that the ID you choose has to be unique. The game will crash if you play against someone who has the same ID as you. It is also possible that you find multiple 'Unique System ID' values in your registry (previous/multiple HOMM installations), and in that case you should probably fix all invalid IDs.

Crash after 10 turns
Hello,
I've been playing WoG with a friend and every time we play his game crashes after 7-14 turns. We both have clean install + era 2.3 installed. Is this known issue?
My game doesn't crash at all (well very very rarely), but his WoG keeps crashing. It just jumps into windows without message. Is there some applications that might collide with heroes or something..? Any idea?

In your Heroes folder there is a text file: WOGCRASHLOG.TXT
Can you upload it once you get a crash, please?

Ok, my advice is to right click on scripts descriptions before selecting, some have the description "not suitable for multiplayer". Phoenix mod, which uses Era was played in MP without errors, so it is a matter of which scripts are used, don't take all of them. Commanders are not very safe so far, for example, but many other work ok.

Thanks for the advice. That'll be what we do then.

Multiplayer crash
Hi. Im playing 1 on 1 (with same opponent) multiplayer Homm3 complete via gameranger. Both parties run XP SP2 compatible heroes3.exe
Problem consists of regular crashing. Roughly twice during an hour, and each time during clicking something, rarely during combat.
During crash heroes3 stops responding and the other player sees the crashee leaving the game.
Any similar experiences / solutions ?

GameRanger error
**************************
***** PROBLEM SOLVED *****
**************************
Hey guys
I will really appreciate some help here.
I've been playing HOMM3 for ages now.
Also played via hamachi for a while.
But now I thought I'd be able to play homm3 via GameRanger with some fellas.
GameRanger allows me to play all my other games such as COH, Diablo2 etc. But sadly homm3 is problematic.
After I connect via GameRanger with some1 and we choose all the settings, maps and so on - the host presses BEGIN and it shows me the blue hourglass and on the 98% the game crushes with this error:
http://imageshack.us/f/94/heroes3u.jpg/
Please help me guys.
Thanks in advance.

A few tips to play a multiplayer match without crashes.
I haven't tested the game with Commanders because I and my friend don't like this feature...
We play over Tunngle. Works fine.
Heroes3 + Era 2.4 + these Mods in this order:
XXL
Undead Ghost (by artu)
Morn Battlefields
Yona
Original Wog Chests *
Wog Revised (new version by artu)
WoG
* I use "Original Wog Chests" because if I use "WoG Revised", in a multiplayer match the "New Treasure Chest 2" script have a lot of bugs (orange chests are empty).
WoG Options:
Scripts that don't work in a "network battle" are disabled.
Scripts that don't work in the same way as the AI are disabled.
Quick savings (WoG Revised) is disabled.
... And if you want to use HeroesHD with the previously mods:
My Homm3 is installed on a PC with Windows7x 64 and my friend has a PC with WindowsXP.
If we use HeroesHD mod the game crashes often when my friend sends data to me.
But I have found that all works fine if I share the Heroes3 folder giving full permission to "Everyone"!
Ah... And use XP Compatibility mode (of course).
With this settings the game crashes some rare times when I engage a battle.

Homm2 gaming problems
I have been playing homm2 gold via gameranger. We can play, we can save but there is no way to load saved game. Gameranger automatically chooses new game. How to fix this? I'm fed up to playing just small and medium maps because of this.

Hi all.
I seem to have a problem with GameRanger.
The problem is, when I try to host a game it says that I don't have the game... I have no less than +5 different folders with different versions of the game... so... I have heard that this client should be really good, but I hardly disagree when it can't even find the game...
EDIT: WHAT A FOOL I AM... JUST SAW THE "BROWSE" BUTTON...

Hey there. I have a problem I've seen others have too but didn't really have an answer to. Me and a friend are trying to play via Hamachi on Heroes 3 Complete. Whenever i make a game and he types the hamachi(ingame) IP, he can't find it. I can join his games, but after 3-4 days his Heroes started to crash (not responding) whenever he clicked on "Host Game" button. Now we've trying all kinds of stuff and since we even played days before and nothing was changed pure logic suggests that there shouldn't be any problems, which isnt the case obviously. Ill be glad if u have any suggestions on what to do here. Bare in mind that we've reinstalled the game and all the other "would-be" general solutions but so far - nothing. He's using Windows 7 ...im on Windows 8. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
First of all you are doing a great job with wog.
I wanted to play wog in multyplayer mode. It seems that is qorking great with 2 players, but with 3 or more players is not working.
If there are more then 3 players in the game there are sync issues. Te host can see the other 2 players, but they cannot see each other. They can see only the host.
The question is, is ths a known issue, wog can't be played online with more then 2 heroes ? Or there is a problem on how do the configuration.
Has anybody played wog online in multlayer with more then 2 players ?
Tanks and keep up the good job

Some time ago I moved my Heroes III gaming environment to a virtual Windows XP machine running as a VirtualBox guest on FreeBSD host. GameRanger works no worse than in physical machine, but direct TCP/IP quit working. At first I worked around this by changing virtual adapter from default NAT to bridged mode, but this made my system unstable (this was more than year ago, maybe it is resolved now).
Few days ago I got pissed by GameRanger again and started to look for another solution which would give me the ability to play direct TCP/IP. It appears that in VirtualBox one has the opportunity to forward ports from host to guest with network adapter in NAT mode, similar to port forwarding on a router. However, GUI does not support port ranges, only single ports, which means forwarding both TCP and UDP ports 2300 to 2400, 28800 to 29100 and 47624 would take hours of clicking.
Fortunately, VirtualBox CLI gives the opportunity to forward ports from command line, and some smart guy with basic knowledge of bash scripting wrote a post about port range forwarding in VirtualBox on Dead Coder blog. Now I can play direct TCP/IP again.
Hopefully this will be helpful to other H3 players
