It'll never happen, but...
Was just futzin' around on HOMM3, and I realized how annoying it is when the enemy hero gets away with all of his artifacts after casting implosion or whatnot on one of my units. So, for my radical change for the day, this is how I wish (upon the stellar body of your choice) that retreating was handled.
The battle map should be, say, 40 hexes across. Each unit (and hero) starts 10 hexes from the edge. In order to retreat, the unit needs to get off the battle map. Once all units are either off the map or dead, any units that retreated can immediately move the equivalent of 1/3 of a day's movement. If the attacker still has enough movement to overtake the army again, they (the retreating units) are either cut down without a fight or they have to fight with some pretty severe penalties (if they make it back to a city, they shouldn't be cut down). With fog of war, you might actually be able to hide from the enemy by retreating. The next day, the retreating units would have 1/2 their normal movement as well as morale penalties until the next battle.
The way I figure it, this would make units like dendroids or units that can paralyze immensely valuable in retreating situations since they could hold up the enemy long enough for the rest of the troops to get away. It would also place more of a premium on speed, both to prevent retreat and to be able to retreat. (It would also be a nice way to lure an enemy hero into an ambush!) Also, somebody posted a really good idea about heroic duels (sorry, can't remember who). Maybe that could be a way to allow the rest of the army to retreat.
Anyway, I know it won't happen, but I was really mad when I thought I was going to capture a whole lotta artifacts...

Intresting
That's a good idea, and I can see how it would work, I'm not yet sure if that's the way I would like to see retreating work, but it's a good idea none the less
That is one reason why I find the Shackles of War very valuable, I usually check all black markets, all ship wreck survivors, all artifact mercaints, any place to find artifacts, even the warriors tomb with a useless scout, just to find the Shackles of War

Ok i like this idea i think that adding moral to creatures would really add huge strategy to the game (obviously i dont think some creatures would be effected by this ie undead)
Anyway this is how id like them to be able to leave the battlefield: You get a choice of two options for your unit one is total rout this would increase there speed but dramatically reduce there defence (faster because id sure run fast from the enemy! Low defence since its everyone for themselves theres no order) Or just try and slowly pull them back the old way.
I dont think every creature would run away anyway and maybe some types would refuse (undead?)

Mods were less careful with the QPs at some times depending on their mood and how little posts had recieved qps in the last week or so.At least i expect their mood influenced some decisions anyway.

Was there really any need to have got this thread back up?
Besides, the post that revived it was NOT really about this thread, rather the fact that it was asking why the first post got a QP.
Couldn't you just have HCM'ed a moderator about it rather then revive a very old thread without adding any real 'on-topic' post?
I know mine isn't on-topic as such, but this thread wasn't needed to be revived just to ask why the first post should have got a QP.
