Changes With Adverting
Note that the ads are removed temporarily due to a change in progress.
The changes I plan to make so far are:
- removing the cube advertisement and making index and forumdisplay pages free of ads.
- making all other pages except for viewthread and post free of ads.
- increasing the size of the ad on the viewthread page and moving the ad to the very top of the page.
- removing the banner ad from the post page and instead adding a vertical "skyscraper" ad on the side of post box.
- not having ads show up every single time.
- adding an option to donate $10 and make HC free of ads for one month for everyone.
I plan to make it so that any additional donation over $10 will simply add to the ad-free period. The only exception to the ad-free period can be when a targeted game-related campaign is sold to HC exclusively (which doesn't happen often), and if it happens during the ad-free period, only the targeted campaign will run, all other default advertisements will be disabled, and ad-free period will be extended after the targeted campaign runs out.
Any suggestions welcome.
Also, if you have ideas about what to do with the free space in the page headers, feel free to suggest.

If we donate the $10, can we have it say for a month "This month brought to you by bort. "Bort" -- recommended by 9 out of 10 escaped mental patients."
Have you tried bort yet? It's the wave of the future!
Or how about if you make it so that whenever somebody visits, a pop-up offers them a free issue of bort, guaranteed to reduce your body fat by 12%?
Bort -- everybody else is trying it, shouldn't you, too?

I thought about that, but most donators so far have chosen to remain anonymous. Although it could be implemented if you are serious.

pop up Ads
there seems to be a rash of popups coming from some of the banners nowadays, is there something we can do about it, or am i stuck turning off the classmates.com and other windows.
i dont want to get pop-up blocker for various reasons. and its not spyware related
just refresh pages enough and eventually one of the ads with popups will appear. rather annoying
also, 1 month for 10$ seems a little steep, how about more like 15$ annually? if you make it cheap enough then more people will take advantage of it, and more people will be happy. I know i wouldnt pay 10 a month, I would probably pay like 10 a year though.

It's not like you're paying for yourself only though. A 10$ donation earns the whole community an ad-free month. If someone else decides to donate, you benefit from it too. So don't complain if you don't understand how it works please

I went through the ads and removed the flashing, gambling, anti-spyware, cellphone, "you are the winner!" and other annoying ads I didn't want to appear.
With regards to pop-up ads, I've set the amount of pop-up, pop-under and layer ads to be 1 each maximum per browser session. This change should go through tomorrow.
As for $10 per month being steep, that's what it costs me to host this site. What I get paid for advertising covers that. If I remove advertisements and set the donation to lower than $10 per month, I will be paying the hosting out of my pocket, which I prefer not to do.

I apologize, I read it wrong, why dont we work something out with, you can pay like 1$ a month, or like 10 a year for no ads, this way you can actually make some money, upgrade systems, repair whats wrong ect.
10$ per entire site is very very low. like 1cent per active member per year :S

I've come up with a better idea alltogether:
Ads will remain on viewthread and post pages, all other pages free of ads.
Maximum of 1 pop up, 1 pop under and 1 layer ad per browser session.
This will keep HC paying for itself.
Now the final touch. Most of unsold advertising on viewthread pages has been converted to a little banner displaying two random threads from HC database.
This random HC threads advert will also begin circulating on Age of Heroes website to bring more people to HC.

who cast "blind" on my browser?
The random thread banners are missing in action for me.  I cannot find them as mod, member, or guest, using Mozilla or Internet Explorer. Advertisements for monster.com, credit cards, and acid reflux disease medications do show up, but I suspect that these don't lead to HC threads. What's going on?

Most of the advertising is targeted at people from USA, that unfortunately means random threads show up less often for them. Unfortunately I cannot change that as it is what advertisers dictate.
