The Future of the Democra
In my more morose moods, I have reason to believe that we're in for about 20 years of one-party rule in America (and I mean Republican-party rule). Of course, all it will take is a nice global depression to bring Americans back to their senses. It usually takes a major crisis for people to look to the left for a solution. Anyway, there are a number of people working to reinvigorate the near-dead Democratic party in the US. After twenty years of being labeled "weak, wussy, wimpy, and worse" by the opposition and usually the media too, it's an uphill battle. Perhaps we'll be lucky and the US will turn back to the left before we have a depression or another World War. I'm skeptical about that, though.

You're absolutely right on the slavery thing there, WolfMan. Some of us learn from our mistakes.

In 2008, the Democrats should nominate 3 candidates just like in 1860! Just for a change, that is what the Democrats are all about, right?

This election was an uphill battle against conservative values. Such values are regressive and don't look to the future in any positive way. They just say, lets protect what we have. Protect our money through less taxes, protect our industry through weak environmental laws, and protect our country through playing on fear. They conserve the present at the expense of the future.
What the Democratic party needs is vision. A vision of the future that projects freedom from fear, freedom from policies that erode Democracy while pretending to protect it. And it needs someone capable of expressing this vision in a way that people can understand and believe.
No negative campaign can stand in the way of a creative vision.

What the Democratic Party needs is some actual political strategists. Dump Paul Begala and James Carville, who's strategic political advice to the Democrats was basically to call Republicans names. Didn't work, and the country is better because of it.

I agree. They should stop pretending to be Republicans, and thake back the people. Move to the left, in other words. Although I'm not too sure that is the way to gain public support in the US anymore...

Conservative values are regressive? Values are in no way regressive. Kerry was cold, harsh, and distant. That was why he lost. The people felt that Bush was the better candidate to protect morality which has come under severe attack what with things like abortions and stem cell research becoming hot topics. Bush won as a person not a Republican, he won because he came off as a guy who could lead America back to her former church-going self.

Even though your own founding fathers were quite specific about keeping religion and state seperate...
I doubt Abortion and Stem Cell research were the issues anyway since polls tend to show a different picture from those in the elections on both those issues.

Funny thing about stem cell research:
The Reagans used to be all against it, until they found out that stem cell reasearch could be a way to find a cure for Alzheimer. Which the old geezer (I know I should respect the dead, and I do: I respect and honour the 30.000 dead Nicaraguans, amongst others) was suffering from.
So now, Ronal and Nancy's daughter Patty critisizes the Bush administraion for banning it. So does Nancy herself.

Reformation of the Democratic Party
Laelth, I share your despair. But I want all you Dems to know that there are some rather brilliant minds at work on how to hijack the Democratic party in the next four years, taking with them a huge slice of moderate Repubs who are equally disenchanted with the fundamentalist movement at work in their party.
As argued in the book, "The Culture War," the parties are producing extremist candidates in both ends of the spectrum, creating a largely misleading appearance that America has become a bunch of polarized extremists. We all get faced with extremist candidates, and then try to justify our choices by repeating their rhetoric to ourselves and one another over and over.
The truth is that a huge cross-section of individuals in both parties with very similar moderate views exists, and that they are all pretty dissatisfied with the choices that keep being produced. It's just that one party is better at marketing its extremist candidates and pressing their success than the other is.

Peter Beinert, Simon Rosenberg and Harold Ickes are some names to start watching for. If you guys are serious about this, start googling those names and let's talking strategies and candidates (including moderate Republican ones -- anyone say Colin Powell or John McCain???). We have to do this grass roots if it's ever going to happen.
One of the things he HAVE to avoid out of a matter of pure pragmatism is any candidate who will be perceived as a soft liberal (see Beinert article). If we want to take control of the country back, we CANNOT afford to front east-coast soft liberal candidates like Kerry, or any figurehead that is universally hated by the right. I hate to say it but I fear that H. Clinton might already be in that group. Much as some of us might want certain individuals, they may simply be another sure-fire formula for losing depending on where they stand in the eyes of the right at the time of the campaign.
We have to recapture the middle -- and we HAVE to do it before the extreme right wing figures out a way to do it first.
