Rookie player, any answer to my questions or other tip would be welcome

Hello everybody.

I am an all-time fan of the HOMM and Warlords series. I stopped with Heroes III though and did not play it on-line at that time. I want to start playing Heroes online, so I have a few questions:

1. Where do I find the most active community? Heroes 3 or 4? if 4, is it 3.0 or equilibris? or anything else?

2. Any tip on what to do and what to avoid in multiplayer games would be welcome, both on ethics and on strategic issues. Just asking because I had one game yesterday and noticed I was far from optimal regarding:
- how to develop my town: first creature buildings or first income buildings? I assume I should develop lvl 3 creatures building, then town hall for more gold, then lvl 4... is that correct?
- how to manage the strategic map: focus on the mines first or try to boost the heros? have only one stack to concentrate all the exp on 2 heroes and increase their levels or split them to capture more ground quicker, but then have lower level heroes?
- how to develop heroes: I find it very hard to develop heroes to high levels (e.g. if you want GM necromancy it already takes many levels... not to speak of GM in any magic...)... BUT at the same time, if you focus entirely on the magic (or tactics), then your hero is frail and dies quickly... so should I develop combat to increase survivability? If yes, will this not slow down the heroes development even more to the point it will cripple it?
- how to manage fights: what are the spells that you maybe don't use against CPU but should know about when facing humans?
- etc...

3. Would you recommend training some time with CPU to better get to know the game, then come on-line and adjust strategies to human vs. human games, or is the cpu training a waste of time because the game vs human is too different?

4. What maps should I get used to? any specific map that is often played in tourneys?

Don't know what to ask more specifically, so any tip you you would find worth sharing will be welcome.

Thanks is advance,

I went over the table of content and all the topics seem to refer mainly to Heroes III. I could not find any answer to my question whether I should play Heroes III or Heroes IV.

I read somewhere that the Heroes III community is still more lively than the Heroes IV community. Why is it so? Is it because Heroes IV came out unfinished? If so, has the mod not done a good job fixing it?

In one word, which version would you advise and why?

Heroes IV is very different to Heroes III.

It was a disappointment for many H3-players, but also found a small () group of people who like it.

You can find a forum of Heores IV here on the board as well. Just click here

I think u have to see and play both to have an opinion.

Ok, let's put it in another way then.

I play warlords 4. I love it. And it seems I'm a decent player. The problem is that it's hard to find opponents, the community being so small.

Therefore my choice to come back to heroes where the community seems to be larger.

I have played heroes 3 a LOT (solo and hotseat only) and I have played heroes 4 a bit (like 10-15 games or so, mostly solo, some on gamespay).

Both games are ok for me. Anyway, the AI is of little importance to me as I feel that only human vs human game is interesting.

Before investing too much time to master a game (heroes 4 namely) and trying it online, I want to know if there will be the expected community on-line, thus my question. Sorry but I have quite a lot of work and a g/f, so I cannot afford to play as much as when I was younger.

As far as i know, the online games of H4 are lasting much longer than the H3 ones. The only place i know where u can play H4 online is gamespy. H3 is played on the zone mostly (on gamespy as well though). There are many H3 tournies going on the zone and when i´m on the zone, i see between 25 and 70 players (weekends more than during the week) around the clock, coz they come from australia, korea, russia, israel, middle europe, usa, canada, brazil up to Hawaii (it´s part of the states, i know..).

Ok, you answered my question then.

If I compare with the 20-30 players on Gamespy, some of which are playing the original version, some other playing the mod, there are much more players playing heroes 3 than any category of heroes 4 players.

As I want an active community and I also know heroes 3 fairly well, this is the way to go for me.

Thank you for your assistance,
