Soundtrack of Your Life
For quite some time now, I've been thinking about what songs could be used to accompay my life. After years and years of pondering, I've made a track-list that I think fits kinda well.
Here it is, after a time of testing in GG, "The Soundtrack Of My Life - Terje Broadroad Mossfield In Music":
Radiohead – Creep
Who hasn’t experienced that feeling of being in love with someone (from a distance); someone who doesn’t seem to be aware that you’re alive? Most (read: all) of my crushes have been like this.
Black Sabbath – War Pigs
This song about “politicians hide themselves away / they only started the war / why should they go out to fight? / They leave that part to the poor” is a good description of why I’m a semi-pacifist.
Rage Against The Machine – Know Your Enemy
You should always try to know what the motives, ideals, plans and such of your enemies are. This is more of an ideal for me yet, since I haven’t gotten around to reading much right-wing literature yet. But I’ll get there someday, and until then, I just gotta try to understand them in other ways…
Nofx – Separation Of Church And Skate
”I want conflict / I want dissent / I want the scene to represent / Our hatred of authority / Our fight against complacency / Stop singing songs ‘bout girls and love…” That is the message in this song, and also my general criteria for good songs, though I of course do enjoy some love songs, occasionally. Just not all the time…
Oueen – Heaven For Everyone or John Lennon – Imagine
The way I see it, both of these songs are just descriptions of the ideal society, or as I call it, the socialist society. Heaven For Everyone: “This could be Heaven for everyone / This world could be free / This world could be one…”. The entire lyrics for Imagine are relevant here, so I won’t bother to post them…
The Clash – I’m So Bored With The USA
Sadly, this song is still relevant, almost 30 years after its original release.
The Damned – Anti-Pope
This song’s gotta be included because it expresses my extreme dislike for organized religion. Religion is a personal matter a set of individual rules or values for how a person would like to live his or her life, and shouldn’t be the thing to run everything in society. Besides, it’s frightfully excluding…
Skunk Anansie – Yes It’s ******* Political
People who say “It’s just politics, it’s so boring, it has no relevance for us!” just pisses me off. They should learn from the wise words of Skunk Anansie. Everything’s political. Politics are everything.
Sex Pistols – I’m Not Your Stepping Stone
Title says it all, really…
Silverchair – Freak
One of my pretentious fancies is that I’m a freak. So, the words of Silverchair, “Body and soul / I’m a freak”, fit me well, I think.
Radiohead – How To Disappear Completely?
When my father told me he’d gotten cancer, or on the fairly few occasions that my parents are arguing, or when I just feel generally miserable, I go to my room, put this song on repeat, and hide myself under a blanket. It’s amazing what its refrain (”I’m not here / This isn’t happening / I’m not here”) can do when you feel bad…
The September When – Daydreaming
What can I say? I daydream a lot.
Alanis Morisette – Hand In My Pocket
If this song is about masturbation, as some people claim it to be, then it’s the perfect description of my sexual life.
The Offspring – Self Esteem
“I’m just a sucker with no self esteem”. ‘Nuff said…
The Beatles – I Am The Walrus!
This is the song I sing when I’m drunk. So it should be here.
Weezer – Only In Dreams
This song has the same meaning to me as Radiohead’s “Creep”. Distance crushes.
Johnny Cash – I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry
In one of my favourite comics, the main character says something like this: “The worst form of loneliness is when you’re surrounded by people, and still feel alone.” This song reflects my life in the last couple of months, where HC and GG has been my only link to people other than my sister…
Nirvana – Dumb
”I think I’m dumb / or maybe just happy…” Despite the rather negative atmosphere of this collection of music, my life isn’t that bad. I’m actually kinda happy. Which I feel that this song is signalling. And so it is included, to dull the impression that I’m a self pitying ****.
Hmm. It appears that my “Soundtrack of My Life” became much more politically orientated than I had first intended, but since a lot of my time is wasted thinking about politics, I guess it’s just natural.
Anyone else who know what songs that fit your life?

Cool idea
What an awesome idea! To tell you the truth, I did this kind of exercise a while back. I definitely agree that music can sum up our lives and quite fittingly. I'm R.E.M. crazy right now, so I'll devote my whole list to their songs.
1. Begin the Begin
The opener for Lifes Rich Pageant. I can fit in with the lyrics that talk about starting over, because my life has a lot to do with starting things over in order to improve and such. This song has a really fun riff that I enjoy playing on guitar. Michael wrote some clever lyrics for this one, by the way. The group is very talented.
2. Pop Song 89
Speaking of fun riffs (and an interesting video !!!) this song is full of energy that makes me wish I could dance. Anything that makes me want to dance is a rare thing. This song is an energy boost in and of itself. It's one of my favorite songs on Green, in my opinion. It's fun everytime I listen to it.
3. Bad Day
This is a cool song with a cool video. It's supposed to be an early version of ITEOTWAWKI(AIFF), but I think it deserves its own special place in R.E.M.'s catalogue. A rousing song, the lyrics are fast and quite fun to sing if I'm in a bad mood. It's one of those you like to hear loud. In fact, I've sat through classes at the university with it stuck in my head for hours on end.
4. The Wake-Up Bomb
Awesome song from New Adventures in Hi-Fi. I'm not a morning person, but I think that if I heard this rocker in the morning when I got up, I'd enjoy it. It must have been something to hear the band perform this song live back on their Monster Tour. Which reminds me, I'm hoping like heck that R.E.M. will tour Hawaii someday.
5. Imitation of Life
This song is from Reveal, and is a former favorite of mine. This song is very bright, bouncy, and optimistic. Sometimes I need to feel that way when I get stressed out during the day; I listen to this one a lot. The energized feeling this song brings never fails to brighten up my day. Oh, and it has a cool video too.
6. Leave (Alt. Version)
This is a slow, creepier version of the song New Adventures; no loud siren in this one. This song often plays in my head when I'm feeling lonely and pessimistic. That's not always a bad thing, because the fact that this is a great song does my spirit some good. I'm reminded by it that everybody must be on their own once in a while, so I should not feel as bad. I once listened to this one after waking up from a really bad nightmare. The music gave me super nice chills that time, man.
5. The Lifting (Original Version)
This was the song in its original form before it was replayed faster for the Reveal album. I like both versions, but this one has a more personal and emotional side to it. Peter Buck says in the liner notes that it has "languid beauty" and I can't think of a better term to call it. Just so you know, I really enjoy slow, beautiful songs. This has a very nice melody with a pleasing flourish of synthesizers.
6. The Great Beyond
This comes from the movie soundtrack of Man on the Moon. much like the title song of that soundtrack, this one has classic R.E.M. choruses and lyrics. This song is supposedly a tribute to the comedian Andy Kaufman, but I pull my own meanings from the song. Sometimes I do feel like I'm "pushing an elephant up the stairs" whilst wondering about the "great beyond". As a matter of fact, don't we all think that way at times?
7. Crush With Eyeliner
A cool glam-rock song from Monster. It's about a guy being forcefully smitten by a girl; I'll latch on to a lot of love songs since I'm going through a parallel experience. The chorus sounds great with that whistle effect they put in the background.
8. Let Me In
This is a very personal song from the Monster album. The band dedicated this song to Kurt Cobain, who had died the previous year or so. I never truly felt how personal it was until last week when I heard that my good friend died. I think this song means a lot more to me now as a result. If I ever perform live someday, I'd like to do a cover of this one.
9. Drive
Automatic for the People opens really dark with this song. I am easily transfixed by the gentle picking throughout this song; it shows that delicate things can have a really deep effect. I love the part when Peter kicks on the overdrive and does his guitar lick in the middle. He's my role model guitarist. He does some super cool jumps and kicks on stage, too.
10. Beat a Drum (Dalkey Demo)
A really sweet song with powerful lyrics. This version has Mike Mills carrying the majority of the song on the piano in a very nice acoustic style. Stipe did a good job on the words; particularly the line: "Half-way from coal / Half-way from diamond". The chorus is powerful and is sung with great delivery. The album version is just one of the reasons why Reveal is my favorite R.E.M. record.
13. Texarkana
Texarkana is widely considered to be the gem of Out of Time. Mills has the lead vocal here; he does an awesome job. I also heard that he wrote the majority of the lyrics. From the opening bass lick to Peter's chiming guitar, this is a catchy song. The lyrics are kind of about longing and waiting for something good to happen; a theme that I thoroughly enjoy. It's a very effective song on the record; Bill has some nice drumming parts during the choruses, as well.
14. She Just Wants to Be
This song is also from Reveal; a quite powerful song in my opinion. It starts off relatively quiet with just some gentle guitar picking until the synths and drums kick in full blast for the chorus and onward. I think the solo done by Peter in the middle is one of the coolest I've ever heard, even if it's pretty simple to play. As for the song, it kind of fits my situation with a girl. That's also why it's so powerful.
15. Fall On Me
Let me get one thing straight: who doesn't like this song? It is one of the catchiest melodies I've ever heard, plus it has some great vocals from Michael Stipe. I think anybody who enjoys the Lifes Rich Pageant album will rate this classic song as one of R.E.M.'s finest.
16. I'll Take the Rain
This is the song. My favorite song of all time. Yet another one from Reveal in 2001, I am absolutely in love with this one! In a similar fashion to She Just Wants to Be, this song starts out quiet but builds up into a glorious fusion of music and powerful vocals. It's so good, in fact, that I could love this song for its choruses alone. The lyrics are about lost love and the utter desperation and pain that follows a failed relationship. There is beauty in the lyrics: "I used to think / As birds take wing / They sing through life / So why can't we?" The song's character tries to cling to the dream of finding happiness once again. No other song has moved my spirit this much; I get comfort from nearly all of my troubles when I hear this. I hope they'll play this one at my funeral someday. I strongly recommend this song to everyone. In my opinion, it doesn't get any better than this. Brilliant!

Urgh...
won't take the time to write out individual songs now. Maybe later, if I have the time.
A good mixture of Steely Dan, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, U2, with a splash of jazz, soul, funk & folk, and I'd be set.
