Fog O' War

I'm sure this has been covered in previous threads, but just curious what everyone thinks of the new Fog of War?? Especially since it can't be disabled (as of now).

I generally like the idea, but the games could get unnecessarily LONG if you keep losing sight of enemies running them down. It just seems like a HUGE advantage if your hero chooses this ability, since it really only applies to the map world and not the battlefield.
But again, it is going to force the player to try different strategies and pick their poison...

I dunno...mixed feelings about it. What do you all think?

Well, for one thing, it means that any spell or artifact that lets you view where other heroes are is going to become extremely valuable. And items like the Telescope and Speculum that increase your viewing radius are also going to be more important.

I think that the Scouting skill is also going to have to be well developed in at least one hero to help make chasing that last enemy down a bit easier.

It all depends on what the radius around your various towns, mines, garrisons, etc is.

I have played games with a fog of war ..didn't like it much, but I can adjust.

One thing is for certain, life will be a lot more interesting....

Well, the only thing I have to say about this issue is : Make the game more difficult but more challenging as well.

I, for one, would like to know how one could make it more difficult without it being more challenging.
I like the idea of limited visibility, (I'm not sure it this would make the shroud of darkness more or less valuable) although I prefer the term "low-lying clouds of war"

smog of war...

I think it's ok as long as they increase the sight range of towns/castles. in HoMM3 it was way too small. reason suggests that if you are at the top of a tower you are able to look down at a very big area (not that good close to the end of your eyesight though)

Fog of war

WOuldn't saying Fog of war is bad be more like saying you want to cheat?

FOW bring's alot of realism, and gives the game more of a challenge. There are also way's to work around it, with level one creatures standing in path's, to spot your enemy.

I think that the fog of war is a great new feature in HOMM4. I think it could use some adjustments though:

1. It shouldn't be a light version of the black shroud which initially covers everything. I think that it should be a light haze or the terrain and objects should be in black-and-white or something.

2. The fog should appear gradually over the course of the week, starting from the places that you hadn't visited in 3 days or so, then it should slowly cover everything else until it has covered everything but the line of site of your armies, towns, buildings, etc.
