Melee print error?

On all of the Barbarian heroes I have, their Melee secondary skill states: "This Hero's melee target must subtract 1 from their defense score."

On the Melee secondary skill card, Basic Melee states: "Add 1 to your Hero's melee Attack, & deduct 1 from his target's Melee Defense."

Should the Hero's starting Melee ability be the same as the skill card?

I also notice that the Thief Hero's Stealth ability is also different than the Stealth card. In that case it appears intentional and makes the Thief Hero a nice additional surprise purchase at the start of a battle, just like Bandits.

So the Stealth ability on a Thief Hero only pertains to an alternate way to purchase him, and doesn't give him the ability stated on the secondary skill card.  Not until the Stealth card is added to the hero does it provide the "hide-a-hero" ability.

This doesn't seem right to me.  Either you have Basic Stealth or you don't.  Perhaps the Stealth ability written on a Thief should be erratted (sp?) to another name.

Stealth and Melee

Lets not out-think ourselves here. Melee and Stealth are both correct. There is not a misprint. I will explain each:

1) Melee: Your barbarian starts with Basic Melee. When you level up the first time, ideally you would do so with the Advanced Combat Card. Then, when you level up in Melee, it will do something different, because the effect of the Melee secondary skill is based on the Combat primary skill.

However, you may not get to level up in this order. Hypathetically, if you level up by adding the secondary skill card "Melee" before you level up in Combat, you will have become a second level hero, but you have no additional abilities yet. When you do level up in combat, you will automatically have Advanced Melee, because your Melee skill level on the secondary skill advances as the Combat skill does.

This is different from the computer game, but since none of us wanted to have to put 5 Melee Skill cards in our deck (one for basic, advanced, expert, etc), this was the best solution available.

2) Stealth: Your Thief Hero starts with Stealth which allows him to be purchased from your hand as you enter a battle. However, if you are buying the Hero at all, that means he is level one, so he could not have Advanced, Expert, Master, or Grand Master Stealth. This in turn means that it would be meaningless to have Advanced or higher Stealth skills, since a level 2 or more hero cannot be purchased anyway. So, when the secondary skill card is played, the Stealth Skill adds the functionality of allowing you to place the card on the bottom of the stack, instead of on the top. Early in the game, it can be a good thing. It can also be a good thing later in the game, if you have two heroes in the stack. You can separate out the thief hero and a fast creature card(s) and suddenly move faster than you did last turn, surprising your enemy.

The skill that I think has had a lot less use than it deserves is Seamanship. Anyone have a session report where they got good use out of that skill?

So would it be correct to say that Heroes start with a secondary ability, not necessarily the *exact* same ability (at basic level) as a hero who adds the secondary skill card of the same name?
