Artifact Questions?

1)  Does the Helm of Command's text stating "adds 2 to the Attack & Defense of all friendly units" include ranged attack for units with range attacks, since the words are generic and do not specify Melee attack as do other Artifacts like Swords?

2) Do shields that add Defense to units add to a stack when calculating for a swat?  i.e. Does a stack of 3 Bandits with Def of 3 each, making it 9, in an army with a Hero with a shield that adds 2 to all units make the stack now a defense of 15 by adding 2 to each in the stack versus a Swat?

3) Is it an Errata that the Dwarven Shield and the Shield have the same text? Should the Dwarven Shield be stronger as in the PC game? Shouldn't the Shield just effect the Hero?

4) Does the line in the Rules saying " At any time, a Hero may discard an artifact that is taking up a slot he wishes to free up" mean that the Hero does not have a backpack and cannot get an artifact if the slot required for that is full unless he discards it?

Thanks for the Help in advance.

I can answer 2, 3 and 4

2. Yes, each unit gets the defense bonus. So in your example they would bump to 15 total.

3. The Shield is a Nature Artifact and the Dwarven Shield is a Treasure. They are intended to have the stats they have to balance other factions artifacts. Only Nature can use the Shield.

4. The backpack in this game is used for items that specifically go there. 4 slots only. If a hero could keep more than one of a specifc slots artifacts it would get complicated when a character was attacked for the opponent to know what artifact the character had readied for the battle. So by enforcing the discard this makes sure no arguments or complicated record keeping would happen.

***GONGGGGGGG*** This is the first time I've had to Gong the Foehammer! Here is the deal:

1) Yes, Helm of command effects both ranged and melee attacks. By the way, as all other effects assisting "friendly" units, the wearer does not get the effect, only his units do.

2) Foehammer is right on this one.

3) The Shield is a Nature AND Death artifact...so it can be bought in both Nature and Death castles. Obviously, any alignment can use it, but it can only be bought in those specific castles.

4) Heroes can carry extra artifacts, but can only USE one per slot. So, at the start of the battle you must decide which artifacts you are using...So, you can begin the battle with Armor of Chaos and Armor of Life for instance, and decide which one will be used in your battle. The other one would be unused during the battle.

I'll accept my gong for number 4. I did not know that.

Number 3 was correct in the response just forgot that it was a dual artifact for Nature/Death. I have it in my Nature deck right now and unlike Startune I don't have cards at work! ;-)

TFH,
It can be BOUGHT in a Nature town (or Death town) but can be USED by anyone...not just Nature/Death.  That's the difference.

Good point Doc. Double gong for me.

But from a balance issue, typically only a Death or Nature player or a player mixing in one of those factions is going to put such a town and such an artifact in their deck.

Completely agreed!  The only reason to use it in a deck is going to be the fact that you can buy it and not use one of your precious flags on it.
