Thread: Project IGLE (Intergalactic Life Exploration) - OOC

You are on the first starship that is capable of traveling across the galaxy in any minute amount of time. Previous ships were not able to even reach the speed of light. You have searched hundreds of solar systems looking for a planet with any significant amount of life. So far you have found four planets.

The first three planets was a waterworld encased with ice at its polar regions. It had algae and other simple forms of plants growing near the surface of the water. After months of searching the deeper parts of the waterworld, no life was found. It was merely the simple plants growing near the water’s surface.

The fourth planet you have just discovered and have started scanning for terrain and atmosphere composition. The planet is mostly land, hot and dry like a desert. Volcanic activity is prevalent in various parts of the planet. Because of the lack of water, large strips of black land can be seen from orbit by the naked eye. The wind patterns over the ocean travel northeast most of the time, which leads initially to flat lands, first as swamps and bogs, then slowly turning into plains and then finally a mountainous region.

These lands appear to be in great abundance of plant life surrounding this single ocean. Announcements have been sent back and forth across the galaxy to Earth about the abundance of life on this new planet. Hysteria is sweeping across the homelands. Constant debates have been held over what to call the new planet and it has yet to be officially named. However your research team prefers to call it Solitas, which is the latin for the word solitude. Several new ships have been built since your departure nearly ten years ago. All of them have set course for this newly discovered, unnamed planet. Tomorrow a landing party will venture down to the northern shores of its only ocean. There the first steps and samples will be taken.

This looks like my kind of thread. Anyone read the Ender series by Orson Scott Card?

Well tell us more of your plans, I'm in for sure.

See I was sort of going for an exploration type thread.

But I just got another idea...

Well see many people are building ships to venture out to this new planet. Some people for various different reasons. People are pushing heavily to start major projects to populate the planet or tap it for resources. So it's not just going to be an exploration type thread. There will be heated political and moral issues. So there should be some debating in this thread too.

But this is far against the scientists who want to preserve it and disrupt as little as possible, before they know more about the planet.

Sounds like Dragon Hunters 2000 years later with the different groups after the same goal for different reason.

Only, as you said, this one can have direct debates between the two.

No this thread is completely different. Dragon Hunters 2000 years later????

One is about killing dragons. This is about exploring/studying/colonizing a new planet. How is that the same?

Two or more groups going after the same thing for different reasons, one good, one bad, and one neutral.

Right but that's a very generalized statement. I think that's too vague to compare the two threads. I mean aren't most conflicts in real life similar to that scenario? Often there are two sides to an issue and then neutral sides as well.

Plus the Dragon Hunters isn't really going to be more character interactions and some action scenes where the politics takes a back seat. This thread politics, exploration, and studying is the main emphasis. Though I do agree on the similarity, I think that both threads will have very different flavors.
