Hi Dkolb,
Click AvatarList in the top line of links on this page and you should be able to find out how many people are using that avatar (note that most of those people might not be active posters). When an avatar is reserved, noone else can select it, so if you could selected it, the most likely answer is that you can use it and noone will mind.
