Associated colors: Black and Yellow
Worship: The insectoids are agnostic - they ignore the Primordial Dragons.
Philosophy: "Society is everything".
Country/kingdom: the wastelands of Sherrshen
Capital city: Ossah, the Mother Hive
Simple symbol: Crescent and two thorns.
Heraldic emblem: A simplified head of an insect (black on a yellow shield).
Flag: Different color for each hive with the heraldic emblem in the canton (upper left corner)
Aligned hero: Bey (human race).
Hero attributes: Good atack, average spell power, weak defense and knowledge.

* Race description:

* Brief history:

Origins: The insectoids weren't planned to populate the world. They have evolved from mindless insect by chance (as some say), by the laws of nature (as other say), or by an intervention of a supreme being wishing to stay unknown (as yet other say). That's why they do not worship any of the Primordial Dragons.

515 YSD: The first hive (Ossah) grows big enough to have consciousnes (in a form of a collective brain) appear. The beginning of the race.

518 - 555 YSD: Under the influence of Ossah subsequent hives become conscious beings. Ossah slowly discoveres herself as a two-level being, different from most other ones.

555 YSD: A lone warlock Kha-Khay arrives to the Sherrshen wastelands. For the first time the Insectoids meet a intelligent one-level being. Kha-Khay and Ossah became fascinated with each other. They quickly learn how to effectively comunicate using a kind of gesture language. Kha-Khay decides to stay in Sherrshen.

900-930 YSD: The whole wasteland of Sherrshen is under the influence of the hives. Ossah decides to revive the expansion plans. The hives start hiring heroes as the Beys. Subsequently human beings start living in hives - treated there as symbionts (much like "good" microbes in a human body).

949 YSD: The first appearance of cocroach riders. First attacks on nearby terrains. Other races Have a proof of the existence of the Insectoids.

951 YSD: During the 5th Eclipse hordes of demons attacks Sherrshen. Many hives are destroyed. The Insectoids lead by the beys counterattack and massacre the invaders. During the next eclipse (969 YSD) demons dare not to appear in Sherrshen again focusing on the Griffin Empire instead. This gives Ossah and other Hives enough time
to restore their power.

1001 YSD: The wounds of the latest war are fully healed. Ossah orders the Beys to conquer new terrains for the insectoids.

TBC...

* Creatures:

1 Black Ant (upgrade: Winged Ant)

2 Scarab (upgrade: Scarab Guard) [big unit]

3 Serpent Fly (upgrade: Dragon Fly)
The only shooters among the Hive ranks, serpent and dragon flies are necessary units in every big Insectoid army. As flying creaturs they may spit their missiles even if enemy units are nearby. The main weaknes of the serpent flies is their low resistance to enemy blows. The dragon flies are better armored and thus much thougher. They gain also small magic resistance. They have their nests on high rocks.

4 Cockroach Rider (upgrade: Cockroach Reaver) [big unit]

5 Scorpion (upgrade: Venomous Scorpion)

6 Hornet (upgrade: Diving Hornet)
They aren't too large, but their stings are deadly! They fly with blinding speed and their poisonous bite reduces attack strength of any living creature. Their carapaces are rather weak so a wise commander would not let them be exposed to enemy attacks. Diving hornets attack twice dealing the second blow after the enemy retaliation.
They live in strange nests build in rocky cracks.

7 Goliath Beetle (upgrade: Hercules Beetle) [big unit]

Brief history:

They quickly learn how to effectively comunicate using a kind of gesture language. Kha-Khay decides to stay in Sherrshen.

561 YSD:
Kha-Khay adds a suffix -Bey to his name. He finds that a human can lead armies of insects binding his mind to the collective brain of the army. He starts to plan a expansion of hives - insectoid armies lead by him prove to be effective in first battles.

564 YSD: Due to the solar eclipse a band of demons appears. It is repelled easily by the united hives but Kha-Khay-Bey dies in the battle. Expansion is no longer possible but the plans are remembered.

600-900 YSD: More and more hives appear on the wastelands.

900-930 YSD: The whole wasteland of Sherrshen is under the influence of the hives. Ossah decides to revive the expansion plans. The hives start hiring heroes as the Beys. Subsequently human beings start living in hives - treated there as symbionts (much like "good" microbes in a human body).

to restore their power.

1001 YSD: The wounds of the latest war are fully healed. Ossah orders the Beys to conquer new terrains for the insectoids. The Mantis War begins...

Creatures:

1 Black Ant (upgrade: Winged Ant)
Black ants are the common soldiers of the hives. They are numerous and they fight to the end defending their Mothers. No one can be safe deciding to attack them, as their counterattack furiously. In time the ants evolve into winged beings capable to fly. They inhabit strange mounds they build themselves.

Basic abilities:
Unlimited retaliation

Upgrade abilities:
Unlimited retaliation
Flying

2 Scarab (upgrade: Scarab Guard) [big unit]
Very slow and very resistant both to physical and magical attacks Scarabs are the defensive units of the Hive. Hiding behind their dungballs they can survive even after a fiery charge of a hostile stack. In melee the try to roll they dungballs over the enemy which sometimes results in pushing the foe away (and thus no retaliation). Of course the pushing occurs only if there is some free space behind the attacked unit. Scarab guards can create short-time obstacles on the battlefield - additional dungballs on adjacent squares. They live in shallow holes under stones.

Basic abilities:
50% magic resistance
charge resistance

Upgrade abilities:
50% magic resistance
charge resistance
25% push away attack
create temporatry obstacle

3 Serpent Fly (upgrade: Dragon Fly)
The only shooters among the Hive ranks, serpent and dragon flies are necessary units in every big Insectoid army. As flying creaturs they may spit their missiles even if enemy units are nearby. The main weaknes of the serpent flies is their low resistance to enemy blows. The dragon flies are better armored and thus much thougher. They gain also small magic resistance. They have their nests on high rocks.

Basic abilities:
Shooter
Can shoot even if blocked

Upgrade abilities:
Shooter
Can shoot even if blocked
25% magic resistance

4 Cockroach Rider (upgrade: Cockroach Reaver) [big unit]
The cocroach riders are human beings mounted on giant insects. Their main task is aiding the hero to lead the army - with them on battlefield all other Hive units have their stats raised. No doubt they are often the first target for any enemy. They wear insect-like armors and when attacked they defend with crooked sabres. They may also attack the foes themselves but they are not very effective in that. The Reavers are skilled in simple magic and they can cast a few aiding spells on friendly stacks. They also know the principles of effective charges what makes them in fact the most versatile troops among the Hive ranks. They inhabit barracks.

Basic abilities:
Adds +1 to att, def, morale and combat speed of other hive stacks (only once per army)

Upgrade abilities:
Adds +1 to att, def, morale and combat speed of other hive stacks (only once per army)
Casts basic helpful spells
Charge

5 Scorpion (upgrade: Venomous Scorpion)
Due to their unbelievable agility scorpions are always able to strike first - even if it is the enemy who attacks. Yes, that means the retaliation before the blow! Scorpions' carapaces are not very strong against physical blows but they can sometimes reflect negative spells cast on them to a random enemy units. Venomous scorpions have poisonous stings - the victim suffers some poison damage each turn until end of combat. They inhabit plain hot sands.

Basic abilities:
33% magic mirror
Counterattacks first

Upgrade abilities
33% magic mirror
Counterattacks first
Poisonous attack

6 Hornet (upgrade: Diving Hornet)
They aren't too large, but their stings are deadly! They fly with blinding speed and their poisonous bite reduces attack strength of any living creature. Their carapaces are rather weak so a wise commander would not let them be exposed to enemy attacks. Diving hornets attack twice dealing the second blow after the enemy retaliation. They live in strange nests build in rocky cracks.

Basic abilities:
Flying
Weakening attack

Upgrade abilities:
Flying
Weakening attack
Strikes twice

7 Goliath Beetle (upgrade: Hercules Beetle) [big unit]
Goliath Beetles are ultimate war beasts. As strong as dragons but even better armored they are nightmares of every enemy hero. They are so wild that they can be hardly controlled: they cannot get deffensive stance, but they run towards the nearest enemy stack on their own instead. Their blows sometimes stun the defending unit not letting it retaliate. They are also very resistant to enemy magic. Training them to obey orders of the leading hero is a difficult task but it results in Hercules Beetles, which are in fact not stronger but a bit smarter, at least smart enough to let the hero fully control them, and to attack and destroy some obstacles on the battlefield when ordered to do so. In the hives they live in underground tunnels.

Basic abilities:
Attacks automatically the nearest enemy (or runs towards it if cannot reach)
25% chance of no retaliation
50% magic resistance

Upgrade abilities:
25% chance of no retaliation
50% magic resistance
May attack obstacles to destroy them

Special town buildings

- Mercenary guild - increases the growth of Cockroach riders

- Mothers' chambers - allow recruiting insectoids from nearby standelone dwellings directly in town

- Caller mounds - support the "Call the bugs" ability.

- (Grail) Unrevealed

Rating: 7

I would have loved to give you more, UT, but it's not exactly as thrilling as I would have expected.
The history is somewhat short, it does not explain it self, it does not "work" as a story. It's just like things happen one after the other but neither has anything a reason to happen, nor has anyone a reason to act like he does.

The race itself is a nice idea and I'd love to play an insect town (although I know it won't ever come true), but it's not that original, and I can't see the tiers fit together that well on a single BF.
A good point for you: Your Hive was the first town I picked for rating because I was *interested* in it. I did not know it was yours - and I didn't even know you had one.

Balance? I don't understand how we should rate this anyway - and that's why I'm only giving one single number as an overall impression.

Conclusion: There's still work to do before you can enter the Nival contest. The faction isn't (yet!) consistent in itself.

Best wishes!
Labyrinth

Race: 9 (very good job, colective mind is one of the best implements)
History: 5 (impressive history, but not as much elaborated as it could actually be)
Creatures: 7 (didn't like the roachers riders much, but the overall is good. Still, you didn't said HOW the dragonflies and serpent flies attacks ranged)
Balance: 6 (The biggest flaw is the scorpin first strike. It was balanced in H4 because creatures attacked at the same time, so you would do full dmg neverthles. Here, if you aren't able to do full dmg to the stack YOU attack is a BIG disavantage for melee units)
Originality: 10 (Just unique )

Total: 37

EDIT: Ops, now I saw "spit missiles". It is not precise, but it is something. Still not enough for me to rise 7 to 8.

Race: 8  History: 7

Good concept, the whole collective conscience is a very interesting thing to exploit, but to tell you the truth, an insect faction is not my kind of faction for HoMM.  History is a bit exaggerated, the insectoids basically wipe the floor with the demons.

Creatures: 6

Pretty weak in the special ability department. The Scorpion does not fit with the other insects (it's an arachnid), but that's only minor I guess.

Balance: 5

Only one shooter, one flyer, and a berserking level seven with an almost useless special ability (how many times can you afford wasting a top level creature's attack to remove an obstacle?) could make this faction a low priority choice

Originality: 8

Being somewhat conservatory about the heroes series, it's a bit too original for me.

TOTAL: 34

Race: 4(sorry,ý simply cant place it in the game)
History: 5(shart and a bit shallow in my opinion)
Creatures:7(solid for a insect town)
Balance: 6(too many magic resistant creatures)
Originality:7(some abilities like shooting even if blocked or some creatures are very creative but the castle should be described and insect town idea is not so original generally)

Creatures(3 +5 )=8
Balance( 2+5 )=7
Originality=6

I’m sorry, it’s an interesting idea but I’m having a hard time taking it seriously.

(minus one for no flag)
Total Score= 31

How I graded these:
Race (Originality [1-5]+Compatibility with HOMM5 universe[1-5])
History (How interesting is it to me [1-5] +Compatibility with HOMM5 universe [1-5])
Creatures (Originality [1-5] +Internal Consistency [1-5])
Balance  (are the special skills inventive [1-5] + Does it have a variety of flyers, shooters, walkers, spell-casters [1-5]
Originality (all the originality scores added up and divided by two.  This means that creativity counts twice. [1-10])
