ICTC: Forge

FORGE FACTION

• Aka: The Dwarves
• Associated colors: red, grey, and gold
• Worship: Vulcanus , the Dragon of Fire
• Core philosophy: “You are not worthy of respect unless you can make your own blade.”.
• Country / kingdom: Graker
• Capital city: Oskin, the Forge of the Dragons
• Key symbols: Golden Hammer, and the Shield of Fire
• Description:

The Forge dwarves are the descendents are a strong lineage dating back to very founding of the dwarf mortal race as servants to Fire Dragon God.  The dwarves are dedicated to crafting and studying of warfare to protect from outsiders. Clans form the structure of the society.  The clans are always internally squabbling for a right to throne.  Each clan holds partial independence from king unless in time of war.  From a very young age every dwarf is trained in the art of warfare.  It is the responsibility for every dwarf from age 12 to be conscripted to duty of the clan.  Schooling is given to every dwarf in the crafts but this comes with training in soldiery.

Among the dwarves live gnomes and halflings but they have never been allowed to ascend the throne.  Magic is frowned upon in most cases but schools do exist amongst the gnomes which leads many dwarves to having prejudices toward gnomes as witches.  The well educated and rich dwarves look at gnomes with great respect.  Halflings on the other hand are viewed in the complete opposite with the rich believing them to be nothing more than thieves while poor consider them to be their equal.

The dwarves have a pact with Vulcanus that he will provide the fire for their forges as long as the dwarves do not stray from the path.  Vulcanus created phoenixes to better ensure that the dwarves would not stray after watching the examples of other mortals.  The dwarves were told by Vulcanus it was gift of a superb warrior in battle.  The dwarves have always stayed informed of the events of other mortals but have chosen not to get involved. The recent event of the eclipse may force the dwarves to change because the weakened status of the other mortals.

BRIEF HISTORY

Origins
Asha, the Primordial Dragon of Order creates the world by giving it shape and purpose. She then gives birth to the Elemental Dragons who are destined to guide and rule her creation. The mortal races are created as “servants of the Dragon Gods”, and placed upon the earth. Each chooses its gift and its patron. The strong and crafting Dwarves choose Vulcanus, the Dragon of Fire.

Forge Creatures

Halfling Scout (Upgrade: Halfling Spy)

The halfling scouts are the reconnaissance troops for Garker.  The kingdom has long been reliant on the halflings for their ability to infiltrate other kingdoms.  They make up for the lack of charisma of the dwarves ten fold. Their quickness is very crucial for the dwarven armies. (Similar to bandits in Heroes 4. Mainly speed no range attack and stronger stats because of this. If possible I would like them to be able to hide in battle with the upgrade.)

Dwarven Beserker (Upgrade: Dwarven Battlerager)

The beserkers serve the basic role of Garker infantry.  In battle they charge in a fury not recognizing the damage the enemy has done to them till after the battle.  Beserkers tend to have a short life span, but are praised and honored for their courage. (Similar to beserker Heroes 4. As well they will have some magic resistance with their upgrade.)

Dwarven Ballista (Upgrade: Dwarven Fire Ballista)

Ballista crafted by a dwarven craftsman is a sight to see.  Only the dwarves could make perfect a weapon like this.  In the field of battle the ballista make a deadly combination with the battleragers charge lending them support.  Once upgraded the ballista reigns down fire on their opponents adding extra lethalness.(Similar to Heroes 4 the machine is not used to destroy walls.)

Gnome Apprentice (Upgrade: Gnome Illusionist)

The gnome illusionists fill a very important role of magic.  While most dwarves disregard magic, a dwarven general knows very well magic is very important in order to win in battle.  The illusionists use magic to confuse the enemy.  Their trickery is amazing. The upgrade giving them more spells.(Mage without range attack just spellcasting. I thought just to have them do illusions by making clones of units on the field, confusion, forgetfulness and casting illusions of fire like fire wall or other similar spells on the field to block the enemy.)

Mechanical Dragon (Upgrade : Flaming Dragon)

The dwarves knowing the power the of dragons thought to make them.  Many attempts and blunders have been made in the process with more than one dwarf seeing his demise by his invention.  Now after hundreds of years the dwarves have perfected the mechanical dragons enough that they have become a very reliable war machine.  Instead of horses the dwarves use mechanical dragons as cavalry.(Similar to Heroes 4. Of course much lower stats though. With the upgrades using fire while attacking but not a breath weapon.)

Dwarven Guard(Upgrade : Dwarven Defender)

Dwarven guards are elite trained soldiers.  Their training begins when they are very young.  In combat the guards form a wall that stops even the toughest of creatures.  Very slow movement but every inch gained is well worth it.  Dwarven guards attack with no relation.  Once upgrade to the dwarven defender they become immune to many spells.

Firebird (Upgrade: Phoenix)

The Phoenix is born out of hot magma.  The same magma fuels the dwarven forge.  It only is fitting a creature that is born from the same magma that makes great weapons would be so deadly.  Phoenix is seen a gift from Vulcanus by the dwarves.  Vulcanus uses them to watch dwarves. The firebird begins without the rebirth ability till upgraded to the Phoenix.(Same abilities as Heroes 4, but I would like the phoenix to look more like fire and less like a bird compared to the past games.)

Heroes of the forge town are called smiths. Most should start with defense and leadership skills.

Favoured Enemy
Dwarf smiths have the unique ability to train their creatures to fight a specific enemy.
Every smith begins with at least 1 creature designated as favorite enemy, later in the game this can be changed with the help of Clan hall (special building in Forge towns) up to the maximum of four enemies per hero (according to the skill level).
Creatures in hero’s army take less damage against enemy creatures that are currently in smith’s Favorite Enemy list. Several other special abilities of the smith take the Favorite Enemies list into account too.

Wow

I love the idea of the halfling scout/spy.  (And, basically, all the units)

Trying to give constructive comments so...

I have a real thing about flying troops to block enemy archers early.  This is of course, not necessary.  Just wondering will the dwarf spell caster (L4?) be able to cast spells that can prevent a ranged attacker from shooting, eg blind, song of piece, or limit the damage they do?  Or of course, kill them

Thanks for the nice comments.

Ya that was the basical role I thought for the illusionist, but I did not want them to  do direct damage spells just defense spells. As well they will be able to clone units and put obstacles on the field of battle.

I made some edits to the orginal post to try to explain the units better.

I have carefully read all of the dwarvish factions, and here I am with rates:

Race: 7 (Vulcanos - it's senseless, rest is a bit too disregard | Gnomes, dwarfs, hallfings + phoenix, nice...)
Creatures: 6 (...but mecha-dragons, or balista I realy dislike it : / )
History: - (it seems abandoned or sth)
Balance: 6 (no history description - no balance description... I don't know : /)
Originality: 9 (I just like some ideas)

total: 28 (It's just because there's simply no history : ( )

Race: 5 (nice description but lack many important info, I dislike adding 8th dragon god to world of 7 dragon gods)
History: 1
Creatures: 7 (units history & alliance reasons aren't decribed, balista- there is already one in the game, Halfling Scout- nice)
Balance: 7
Originality: 8 (favourite enmy)

Total: 28 (no history affected it mostly )

To be more obiective I've decided to rate all dwarvish towns at once (simillary as Fargoeth did).

Comments: The idea of a race of diminutive smithy-men is very intriguing. However, when it comes to creatures, there is little originality (most coming from Heroes IV) and making a few quizzical choices (Dwarven Guard at level 6). There needs to be more description in the way of statistics for these creatures, to better gauge balance. The favoured enemy racial ability has already been taken, though the rest of the race concept is quite creative, thus earning it a high score in this regard. The glaring absence of history really hurts the town. Otherwise, a promising idea not fully-fledged.
Average: 30
