I prefer strenght+abilities... to be honest. (I don't count Conflux)
1. Centaur Captain (speed, good strenght)
2. Wolf Raider (speed, ok strenght and double attack)
3. Grand Elf (Double Shoot, ok strenght)/Cerberi (Attack whole front, good strenght)
4. Crusader (double strike, good strenght)/Arch Mage (Shooter, reduce spell cost)/Greater Basilisk (Paralyze/stone gaze, good strenght)
5. Minotaur King (pure strenght)/Thunderbird (flyer, lightning bolt, good strenght, speed)/Mighty Gorgon (Very good strenght, death stare)
6. Dread Knight (incredible strenght, death blow)/Naga Queen (excellent strenght, no relitation)
7. Titan (Shooter, good strenght)/Arch Angel (excellent strenght, resurrection, flyer)/Black Dragon (Very good strenght, spell immunity

It depends on game speed, map size and actual game time.
Sometimes the backbone of my army was the master gremlin stack.
There were no other survivors.

So the most important stack is lvl 1-2 at the beginning, 3-4-5 later,
lvl 4-6 even later(month 2) , and lvl 6-7(-8) around month 3.
( time values for SP on impossible, 2 lvl L maps)

Due to the game design, the player is forced to go towards lvl7 units.
As You probably know, the price of the creatures is proportional to the square root of combat value. /dmg*HP*(1+0.05A)*(1+0.025D)* special modifiers /

So You get more power for the money when buying higher lvl units, money is limited (3-4000 gold per day needed to buy all creatures in a fully built city,& only 2K income) but dwellings also cost a lot.  -> ramp up from lvl 1-2 to lvl 6-7, ramp up speed depends on map richness and game lvl.

Of course, there are some especially good/cheap units, that stay longer the backbone of the army; like mighty gorgons, dread knights, storm elementals, master gremlins ..
