Stronghold - merely a proposal...

Yes, a smile. A strange, but awaited grin crosses my face when I see your opinions on my proposed faction. Never should you mind, I am not complaining, neither I am replying to your comments. Yet, I was unable to create a worthy faction. Do not, I daresay, do not think that these words I am currently posting are dedicated to the judges or you, members, to change what you had written. No, they are not.

These words describe what I am currently planning. And thank god it happened the way it happened - you allowed me to see what were the main flaws in my contest entry and what is to be changed, so I take the job of creating a new, freshly-made town or faction - call it as you may. This is not an entry, merely my ponderings and thoughts, as the International Contest is already nearing its end and by the time I finish creating this town, the Official Contest will have been long since ended, though that is only a prediction, a deduction, as it is extremely hard for me to plan the future of this minuscule project. If you are willing to help, though I doubt about that - not a contest entry, pretty easy to ignore, not to notice - be patient and wait a while, as I want to create a great many things before receiving your first comments.

CREATURE LINE-UP - QUICK LIST

Digger > Miner

Warrior > Defender

Hierophant > Battlepriest

Windrunner > Elite Windrunner

Roc > Thunderbird

Eldest > Runemaster

Gargantuan > Behemoth

CREATURE LINE-UP - DESCRIPTIONS

LEVEL 1 : MINER > ARTISAN

DIGGER
A simple, partially-naked dwarf with torn brown digger trousers and a two-handed pick-axe.

INITIATIVE : Low
HEALTH : Average
DAMAGE : Average
DEFENCE : High
ATTACK : Low
MOVEMENT : Low

MINING
Diggers, following their name and title, are the hard-workers of mines, as well as of dwarven treasuries. Their everlasting work in the mountain shafts result in them being able to provide the kingdom with extra resources that vary on the resource mines occupied weekly.

MINER
A dwarf with light-brown worker clothes and a two-handed steel pick-axe.

INITIATIVE : Low
HEALTH : Average
DAMAGE : Average
DEFENCE : High
ATTACK : High
MOVEMENT : Low

MINING
Miners, the elder master diggers, are both workers in dwarven mines and treasuries and local workshops. These mountaineers provide the kingdom with an increased number of extra resources that vary on the resource mines occupied weekly.

TREASURER
Furthermore, the miners can be left in local treasury where they increase the percentage of weekly gold given, depending on their number.

LEVEL 2 : WARRIOR > DEFENDER

WARRIOR
Light dwarven infantry with no helmet, long brown beard, blueish iron chain mail and a one-handed hammer.

INITIATIVE : Average
HEALTH : Average
DAMAGE : Average
DEFENCE : Low
ATTACK : Average
MOVEMENT : Very Low

ENTRENCH
Warriors, the young dwarven fighters, are taught the abilities that the elders cannot master. As the dwarven warriors are young, agile and flexible, they have the ability to entrench themselves by digging into the ground of the battlefield, thus gaining tactical advantages, but losing the movement. For a certain amount of time, the entrenched dwarves lose the ability to move, deal less damage, but greatly increase their defence.

DEFENDER
Light dwarven infantry with no helmet, shoulder-long brown beard, blueish steel chain mail and two throwable one-handed hammers.

INITIATIVE : Average
HEALTH : Average
DAMAGE : Average
DEFENCE : High
ATTACK : High
MOVEMENT : Low

RANGED
Defenders acquire the ability to attack from distance, as they use their hammers more like throwable, ranged weapons. Their brute force allows them to inflict more damage with ranged attacks, yet they deal less damage in hand-to-hand combat.

HAMMER BLOW
Also, the defenders, by using their rather high strength capacity and their strong arms, are able to concuss their enemies with their throwable hammers. Depending on the size of their targets chosen and their defence, they are able to stun their targets for a short amount of time, rendering them unable to perform any action.

ENTRENCH
Defenders, the adept warriors, can entrench into the ground as well as the warriors, but as the dwarven defenders are able to attack from distance, they have further advances in this ability. The dwarves lose their ability to move, but receive a greater defence bonus and deal normal damage. Nevertheless, the duration of the defenders' entrench is half the duration of the warriors.

LEVEL 3 : HIEROPHANT > BATTLEPRIEST

HIEROPHANT
Dwarven magicians with long white beard, iron chain mail, a magical gemstone staff and a white-blue cloak.

INITIATIVE : Average
HEALTH : Low
DAMAGE : Low
DEFENCE : Average
ATTACK : Low
MOVEMENT : Very Low

SPELLCASTER
Hierophants, the priests of the dwarven community, after studying the old runic inscriptions in dwarven academies, are able to handle magical energy, thus gaining control over various types of magic and becoming able to cast different spells. Hierophants are thereby able to cast the following:

- DWARVEN AURA
The selected dwarf target gains a defence and health bonus, depending on the quantity of hierophants.

- MAGIC FIST
Hierophant invokes a fist of magical energy that damages the selected enemy target.

BATTLEPRIEST
The magicians of the dwarven council with long white beard, iron chain mail, a magical gemstone staff with a floating orb on top, a dark blue cloak with an etched symbol of the runes on both the back and the front and a hood.

INITIATIVE : Average
HEALTH : High
DAMAGE : Low
DEFENCE : High
ATTACK : Low
MOVEMENT : Very Low

SPELLCASTER
Battlepriests, the priests and magicians of the dwarven council, belong to the same dwarven magician guild. These dwarves are naturals, gifted by nature, not by learning and studying, yet the latter just improved their abilities. Thus, the battlepriests are able to cast the following spells:

- DWARVEN AURA
The selected dwarf target gains a defence and health bonus, depending on the quantity of battlepriests.

- MAGIC FIST
Battlepriest invokes a fist of magical energy that damages the selected enemy target.

- SHOCK
Battlepriest invokes a ray of magical lightning energy that slightly harms the selected enemy target and stuns for a certain amount of time. Undead/elemental units not affected.

- STONE SKIN
The selected target gains a defence bonus, depending on the quantity of battlepriests.

This is what I have created so far... I would like to get advice from y'all in order to create a better faction - yet, similar to the one I posted before.

About creature list - I suspect it will remain unchanged, only the "eldest" should be renamed... and i need help thinking a MAGIC hero.

Creatures will not have descriptions (no, not the appearance, but the main ones) as long as the story is unfinished.

I really like your original proposal - hence the 41, anything over 40 is VERY GOOD.  I don't think you have to start again.

The main problem I thought (with your original town) was balance.  I would like to see a ranged attacker at a higher level - 4 or 5.  Also, some of the magic abilities of the lower level troops are a bit high.

Just my opinion.  I would send your original version into Nival - it is really good.

Sorry I didn't write more in the rating, as you know, it took a LONG time to do just the number thing.

TDL I wouldn't be so quick to change things.  I was the only one that marked you down, everybody else gave you consistantly high scores.  (You should also know that I tended to penalize for repeat creatures from previous games)And truthfully, I don't like it now as much as I didn't like it then, but your slew or 40's says something about mass appeal. I'd also wait for some feedback from the judges before I decided on an overhaul. (and truthfully, get rid of the Valkyrie picture.  I mean it)

oh my...

I thank you for your comments, but now I would like to express my point of view on this matter, which you undoubtedly misunderstood.

Sorry, I am commenting my ICTC, but I would like to finalize once and for all why I am creating this thread.

I am not dissatisfied with the ratings - quite on the contrary, I am happy I got many 40s, even though FoG's rating lowered the average. Nay, the rating scores are fine, but those who rated and outlined the biggest problems with storyline, balance, creatures and other things made me reconsider my town. Yes, I myself was allowed to see that I would not want this town to appear in the game. Not only I now see how I do not like it, but I see that I should have kept the original version that I had prepared prior to the contest. I wanted a true dwarven town, yet I made it some kind of alliance between many races (none of whom should be associated with valkyries ).

FoG (FriendOfGunnar), I perfectly understand that you were the only one to give low ratings, yet you made me see there is much space for advancements. I am not trying to 'make you like my town', as I seem to think you would not like it or like to have it "in-game" anyway, but I would like to re-create the town which I really wanted to post for the contest, whether it got lower or higher scores - the town I would like to see in the game.

Concerning my proposal, the main shift is that the list of creatures primarily consists of dwarven units and that the town is going to be under the 'neutral' alignment flag. Stronghold - the town has 4-5, yet not chosen, dwarven units - I wanted to make should ressemble the Dungeon, as I want it to be more race-based.

However, I ask, do not view this thread as of a contestant more or less. This is just the 'cause' of why it is happening this way. I want to bring one of my numerous discussions about towns/factions that could appear in the game into the sunlight again.

Oh, and about balancing this faction. I can now say to you that THIS faction shall be balanced (at least, in my eyes ). Even though there may be many powerful abilities among the dwarves, and it would seemingly overpower the town as the growth should be high too, the cost of the dwarven units should bring balance to this town - it would have to be EXTRAORDINARILY high.
