Well, as soon as I get a large enough sample size then I'll examine the responses and try to come up with some theories as to why women are an HOMM minority.

and then the real flames fun begins

BTW if anybody already has some theories about this then all I ask is that you hold on to them until the discussion phase.  ('cept for you TNT, because we're all still spamming )

Well, sorry for posting my theories/knowledge so early, but women are a minority in computer games in general. They are also a minority in the computer-related fields in general because they are usually more social than men. And well, computers are as far from being social as they can get. If you look at just about any computer game, you'll notice that around 90% of the players are male. There are some very rare exceptions to this (such as Sims), but this doesn't change the general pattern too much. Come to think of it - Sims is a game that emulates social situations, so I guess that might be a good explanation If girls do use computer it is usually for emailing and chatting (i.e. social activities).

This topic has been brewing in my mind for awhile so I wanted to finally put it down in the form of a survey.  It's obvious from all the fan boards that women are a minority in the HOMM community so I wanted to explore the reasons why.  I mean I can understand why women shun 1st person shooters but I'd like to try and get a fix on why there's such a large imbalance in HOMM.   (This has also been a lifelong quest for me, to figure out how the female mind works.  I think I'm about 3% of the way there)

So I have a few questions for the ladies.

Quote:
1.  How good were you at math and specifically geometry when you were in school?  And did you enjoy it?

Well, I'm okay at regular arithmetic, but the higher mathematics tend to give me a headache … as did Computer Programming. I never really enjoyed math much, I took it because I had to.

Quote:
2.  What aspects of the entire HOMM series do you find most appealing.  For example the strategy, the visuals, the music, the storylines etc…And what aspects do you find irrelevant?  Feel free to be specific about each version of HOMM.

I like the Medieval Fantasy/Faerie Tale quality & feel of the games, especially in Heroes I, II & III … although Heroes IV still had a lot of those qualities. I love being able to play a Hero (Heroine) who wants to "save the world" from destruction & does it by sheer determination.

Quote:
3. A lot of noise has been made about the percieved sexism in HOMM5.  For example the "good guys" seem to be men and the "baddies" all seem to be women.  (And then of course there's that infamous Dungeon Heroine.)  I want to know if you find this annoying or offensive, or not at all.

Not particularly. Both good & bad men & women abound in real-life too. I don't feel that there is necessarily a sexism element in the first four games of the Heroes series. Of course, I haven't played Heroes V yet, so I'll have to let you know about that afterwards.

Quote:
4. Due to HOMM5's "darker" and more violent nature (and also the above mentioned percieved sexism ) I'm curious if you think you will be less likely to buy and play HOMM5 (In answering this question please ignore the impact the system requirements will have on you)

Since UbiSoft has removed StarForce from Heroes V, I have preordered the Limited Edition. I don't like the darker direction that Nival has taken the Heroes series, but as I've already mentioned, I haven't played Heroes V yet. My guess is that I'll never love it as much as Heroes I-IV but that still remains to be seen.

Also, good luck in figuring out how the female mind works. Men have been working on that quest since the dawn of time … but if you think you're already 3% there, you're doing better than just about anyone else who has ever lived before you.

I was very good with algebra and I'm extremely fast when it comes to mental math.  (If anyone has heard of the math card game 24, I can totally kick your ass.  )  However, I sucked it up big time in geometory.  I blame the teacher.    No, actually, I just have no spacial intelligence.  Despite the fact, I'm still pretty good at Tetris.

I like the strategy and the creatures.  I've always been a big fan of mythology.    I didn't care too much about the campaigns, so I guess that means I didn't play it for the storyline.

I didn't even notice until you pointed it out.    And I really don't care.  They can do whatever they want with the game, as long as it's still fun to play.

Are you kidding me?  I'm playing it like 5 hours a day.    And I'm constantly tired at work because I don't get enough sleep.

Tetris is a 2d game. You don't need spacial intelligence.
