HOMM2 town rating- Barbarian

I would like everyone to state their opinions of this town type.

Here is my description for the Barbarian:

The Barbarian creatures are slow in combat movement, but they make up for it in high attack and defense.
The Barbarians are excellent in the early or midgame, but they are weak at the endgame.
They are good on small to medium sized maps, because the troops and buildings cost hardly anything compared to all the other towns, so they can build up a lot of troops early on, but when you are in the endgame, then because of the weak lev7 unit the Cyclops then you won't have the strongest army, and compared to all the other towns, you will probably get crushed by the other units such as the Titans, or the Black Dragons.
The Barbarian heroes don't start with a spellbook, so you will have to buy one, which can be a bit annoying, but then you will become even more powerful as you have the aid of spells to cast on your army, or to cast at the enemy units.
Nearly all of the Barbarian heroes start with Advanced Pathfinding secondary skill.
The Barbarian town has 2 ranged attackers, the Orc and the Troll.
The Trolls regenerate and they strike at range.
The units for this town are cheap, with the Cyclops only costing 750 gold and +crystal which is excellent compared to the Titan which costs 5000 Gold and +2 gems.
You can build most of the buildings within maybe 2 or 3 weeks, and most of the buildings are cheap aswell.
The only downfall is probably the units in strength.
The Cyclops isn't the strongest lev6 unit in the game and it is quite weak compared to all the other lev6 units in the game.
The Barbarian town is good for starting off but is not good at finishing.
A good town type none the less.

Barbarian: My review

Buildings and costs: Not as expensive in comparison to the spell casters, but boy, do they need ore! Get an ore mine as fast as you can. Their special building, the Colousiem, gives +2 morale during a siege (you think the Knight would have that. . .). Only useful if your town gets attacked a lot. I only build it if I'm bored.

Heroes: Starts with:
Attack: 3
Defense: 1
Power: 1
Knowledge: 1
As you can tell, Barbarians are at their best when they attack things. More often than not, they advance mainly in attack and neglect the other categories.
Barbarians start with Advanced Pathfinding, which is good if there's a variety of terrain on the map. If it's all or mostly grass or dirt, than Pathfinding becomes a waste of a skill.
There's a very good reason why Barbarians don't have spell books: They aren't spell casters! In fact, their magical capabilities are so underdeveloped, I don't usually give them spell books unless I have artifacts to balance that.

Creatures: The creatures under the Barbarian's town share the same philosophy: Attack!

Goblin: While having the same speed and 1 more hit point than the Sorceress' Sprite, the Sprite beats them with flight and no retaliation. At least they're 10 gold cheaper.

Orc/Orc Chieftain: These guys slow you down, but they're the only shooters until the Troll comes along, making them important. They're still a bit slow after upgrade, but at least they get more HP, damage and shots.

Wolf: Aren't these so adorable? Anyway, they're the Barbarians only Very Fast creature, and that alone makes them valuable. They also attack twice when they attack. People often compare them as the opposite of the Knight's Pikeman, with the Pikeman having more defense than attack, while the Wolf is vice-versa. That being said though, the Wolf has a pitiful defense, and should only be moved to kill a unit, pariticularly if either it was the first strike, or the enemy's retatliation was used up.

Ogre/Ogre Lord: As slow as molasses before the upgrade, but, as with any slow creature, perfect for garrisons. When upgraded into Ogre Lords, they can actually be taken places and serve as good guards. Kinda like a higher leveled Dwarf, except it lacks the magic resistance.

Troll/War Troll: Everyone's favourite regenerating shooter! (Then again, it's the only one ) The regeneration often makes attacks aimed at the Troll next to useless unless at least one is killed. Just be careful with them, as they easily draw enemy fire, and their growth rate isn't as high as the lower tier creatures.

Cyclops: Like the Dragon and Phoenix, they also have a 2-hex attack, but they can't fly, nor do they take up 2 hexes worth of space. The chances of paralyzing in their attacks, though, helps make up for lack of flying. Also buys other attackers more time.

Strategy: Like previously mentioned, Barbarians know how to do one thing really well: And that would be attacking. But that can be a bit of a double-edged sword, as you might need defense and such that you don't have. It's best for a Barbarian to attack as soon as possible, or the spell casters will overrun him. This can be better accomplished by utilizing Pathfinding (if applicable) and on smaller maps, where they exactly have time to build up. And besides, attacking is what they do best.

I've said all I can say about the Barbarian. They also have nice town themes, IMHO.

barb is a good pick if you want to rush, as they have dirt cheap buildings which dont require any special resources (except the pyramids).  as long as there are plenty of ore and lumber around (not too hard, since these are common resources), you are good to go.  this, combined with a nearby hill fort (this will upgrade your ogres and orcs for free, giving a huge boost to your army), allows them to take over nearby castles quite easily on week 1.    

as time progresses though, they grow far weaker as they dont have a good answer to titans or black dragons.

Yes I agree with you Fishjie, as they progress towards the Engame, their Cyclops have no chance of defeating the higher level units like the Titans or Black Dragons.
The Barbarians are considerably weaker compared to some of the other Towns, and mainly towards the endgame is where they will lose or have the most trouble with.

Edit:
You may have a chance when your Barbarian hero has a really high attack skill and a really high defense skill, and if you don't and you have some Cyclops in your army, and you are in combat and the AI has some Titans or Black Dragons, then you are toast.
What you should do, is build up your Attack and Defense skill, and try to find any artifacts that will increase them, like trying to find the Ultimate Artifact is a start, because if it is maybe the Ultimate Crown then your attack, defense etc skills will go up by about +6 I think, someone correct me if I am wrong about that
Trolls are a good unit, but again they are a little weak, and you should defend these units, as you should defend your Cyclops.
The Barbarians are good early on because they can get some high level troops really early because the Buildings don't cost that much, but in the midgame and endgame (if you make it that far) then they are rubbish, so when you pick Barbarians watch out for the really good units like the Titans or Black Dragons, as they will easily destory your army, and you will probably lose.

Barbarians work similar as Knights. Their town is easy to build, so if u find a 2nd or even a 3rd town, u can easily build 3 towns up to cyclops (or paladins). Wizards´chance to doublebuild titans are about 1% (). Thats why even in a long game, a big map, Barbarians and Knights also have their chances vs Wizards.
But if both only have 1 town, barbs and knights are for sure toasted on a bigger map.

Yeah Titans when they are on a big map, will easily toast any Cyclops or Paladin, as they are proably 2 times stronger than them and will easily be able to win the fight.
However when you have Cyclops or Paladin and you are on a medium or small map, then you will have a big chance on wining because the Barbarian buildings are cheap and you could build Pyramid within a wekk maybe less.
You have a chance on small to medium sized maps, you have no chance when on Big or extra Large maps.
