Good game. Indeed, it turned out well. It was a bit mortifying at time, but oh well. I'll be practicing; you can be sure of that. Next time, I'll try to toughen my efforts and come out strong.

Yeah sure.
It was a good game and at times when they built that Wonder you were a bit worried, but then it was set on Conquest mode and that was fine then.
My armies got killed alot, but when we kept on making the AI's base weaker and weaker, then they eventually became really weak, and we crushed them.

I'm slightly offended that China was vastly underpowered in the game. Even in AoK. I dunno what the developers were thinking, but I believe it was unfair. It just kind of stood out to me as we played. If you consider the Yamato, they're a lot more powerful. I guess the developers were thinking of the 1644-1911 era, when China really was weak. Oh well, it's just a game...

Anyway, I'll try working on another civ for next time.

I just played several random map games vs the AI and it didn't exactly go well. The comp fried my [butt] and handed it back to me with my choice of soft drink.

I played as various civs, just to get a feel for their strengths and weaknesses. I think I prefer civs that can build Chariot Archers, since they're often necessary in case you never reach the Iron Age.

My attempt at playing Assyria was the most promising; sadly, it ended in failure. I had one whole side of the map to myself, with one puny land bridge connecting me with the enemy's half. As an archery-oriented civ, I built 8 Chariot Archers and they crushed an initial invasion of 5 enemy Axemen and 1 Bowman. Things went dandy until my enemy started building his Wonder. I rushed over with 8-10 CAs and attempted to do some damage; bad move. The enemy had two Watch Towers and about a dozen Heavy Calvary protecting the Wonder's construction. I accepted this temporary loss, but became shocked when about 6 enemy Calvary bypassed my dying army and snuck across the land bridge and into my defenseless Farms. Ran past all my Towers, too!

I've gotta work on it, yeah. That stank.

Well keep on trying.
The Assyrians are the most popular civilisation on MP games I hear so you should use them and destroy that computer.
Good luck and when you improve then we could have another game and hopefully this time I will have enough resources.
We should play deathmatch because im really good at that, not so much with having to get the resources myself because I use them badly which is a weak point with me.

I've been playing a bit and doing better as the Phoenicians. They are pretty good, but 1-on-1 is still tricky. The early game can be messed up easily if the enemy sends Scouts or a small party to kill my Villagers. That's annoying, especially if I had a good starting position. To me, the ability to make Chariot units is a must for most AOE games. It makes Priest-killing a whole lot easier.

Well they are good.
But the most popular civilisation is the Assyrians for multiplayer.
I dont know why, or it might be the hittites or something like that.
Well keep improving GuitarGuy and we can hopefully have another game sometime.
PS:I had to uninstall Age of Empires, because I was running out of disk space, but when we have another game i will reinstall it again

I rarely choose to play the Assyrians, except via random civs. It's widely agreed that this civ rewards aggressive military initiative in the early game. If I'm not mistaken, Assyrian players' chances of scoring victories over more powerful civs decreases towards the later ages, so acting fast is vital. I'm not very good at aggressive gameplay in AOE since I'm more of a builder at heart. I freak out if I begin to run out of food in the late Tool Age, and my heart is usually pounding nervously during the Bronze Age. The darned AI players are so swift on their feet!

Hey guys!
Oh man, I havent played AOE in such a long time. I do have AOE3 and play that sometimes, but its been a real long time since I played the original. I can't believe its still installed on my computer.
I have a couple of favorite civs such as Shang, Persian and Roman and I also play as Greek sometimes. I prefer deathmatch because I dont have to spend the time looking for resources, plus I'm kind of like William, sloppy resource management. One more thing, my strategy. I am a turtler. I love to build up my defences like crazy, and then make an army afterwards.

Yep, I am a turtler as well, I love building walls, towers, anything to help my base in early game, and then when I have sufficient resources, I go and build my army.

thanks dude.

You should have seen some of my strategies for AOK and the Expansion, The Conquerors.

Anyway, the AOE is one of the better RTS games out there, and probably my favourite series.

Have not played AOE III, but don't really want to, seeing as though it looks too modern for me, and one of the reasons I liked AOE and AOK is because it was like "ancient History", if you know what I mean

As some of you might know, I'm actually one the top players in Age of Empires: Definitive Edition and as my friend was complaining about no good/up to date tutorials existing for the game I made one for the most common strategy in the game. This should get you started if you wish to learn how to play the game competitively or otherwise improve your gameplay.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition Tutorial, Fast Tool

Figured might as well necro this thread from the dead as it's kinda relevant, even if totally outdated and some of the information on the first page is plain wrong, like elevation bonus. It's actually 2/3 damage for melee units attacking uphill and 3/2 damage for ranged units attacking downhill. There's a good tutorial on that on youtube by winstonswaffles.

Nice, but I have a question: why play age of empires I when you can play Age II. Not only is Age II an objectively better game, but its definitive edition is miles ahead of age I's one in, well, everything.

Because Age 2 has worse pathfinding and turtle focused gameplay with longer games so you'll even have to suffer for it longer.

TLR Age 1 is a much better game. Now go back to flaming in OSM.

I don't know about the competitive aspect but I definitely like AoE 2 much, much better. It's got Mongols and hand cannoneers and crap. Just having the word "Mongols' in a game improves it. Doesn't matter what it is. Playing basketball? Throw in some Mongols. Game is instantly improved.

I'm surprised the pathing is worse.

Lol, back in the days when a game such as AoE filled significant space on a computer, what was it, 600 MB? And itís only 15 years ago.

And you could even make a limited install with everything running from the CD which was like 30 MB.

@Blizz: It's because they forced to formations in it. So units priorise moving in formation over moving where you tell them to go and at what speed. So pathfinding with single units is exactly the same but as soon as you order more than one unit around they don't respond logically to orders anymore. Every RTS that has formations implemented has them also almost completely disregarded in competitive gameplay because of this(Supreme Commander, Commang and Conquer 3, for example).

I know you played Star2 so imagine if there when you give an attack order for your army to the enemy base, your army at the front would go all the way back to your main hatchery to wait for your newly queued zerglins to produce before forming up in a neat line and starting to walk towards the enemy base at the speed of the lowest unit in your army. Then if you were to give them a new command they would back up, spin in place and shuffle into a row instead and then resume their travel again.

All cool in a campaign or a scenario where you want great cinematics, awful in a fast paced multiplayer environment.

I think the formation thing is even worse in AoE III. I never was good in micromanagment so it's irritating when your cavalry takes the pace of your slowest units...

Imo there should be an option to turn this off or maybe I didn't notice it...
