Thanks Djive

I'm not sure if I should get one or not, but Preserver and Saruman definitely deserve one each, and I'm probably forgetting a couple who deserve one as well.

Thanks Preserver!
Unka-Haakon (I hope I spelt it right) also deserves a quality point. (Not because he (Or she) posts good threads, but Unka is quite friendly)

All: When you recommed somebody for a qp, please also say which thread(s) the post(s) are in. This thread is meant as an aid to the moderator to find candidates to review for qp. If you're just giving the name of a person, then you're not being all that helpful. If you are not giving a thread, then chances are that the moderator can't find a post worthy of getting a qp. (The moderator can't search the full archive for posts made of a certain author ...)

If you suggest a qp for starting a topic, then name the topic(s) created by the person, which are worthy.

In any case I suspect giving both the thread and the name of the person will greatly increase the chances of your suggestion being granted.

Another reason for naming thread(s) in conjunction with names is that a person may qualify for several qp(s).

I don't think posts with an old name/user should carry over to a new. The reason is: the moderator will need a suggestion on a post that qualify for a qp written by the user who should get the qp. So therefore the post will need to be submitted by the "new" user.

I think Milena should receive a quality point for her thread "A morality test". I didn't understand some things but the thread was great. I haven't seen such thread and it is very interesting - a real psychological test!

Why is this important?

I mean to have QP. These threads are gone and forgotten, me thinks.

Some qp:s awarded...

I got a qp for this thread and preserver for his Expansion pack proposal. So it does have some effect to make suggestions.

I looked through the last week's threads on the Altar, and have some new suggestions for qp:

Sir Duncan: qp for his first post in the "Terrain" thread.

Saruman: qp for his first post in the "New ideas" thread.

Great Idea initially

This thread is one of the better ones I've come across recently, It's kinda funny that I always look back upon the past to see where the board is at the present and I thought that a brief absence for 2 weeks would not change much. I am so relieved to come back to a board where people are stepping up, people who are of the red star generation and not of the dreaded gold stars that we started to see over the last six months. The focus for people has definitely become the red stars, and I am glad to see a much higher level of posts starting to appear.

I always thought about the top 2% ratio that has been put forth as criteria for judging quality posts, but as I've said before in other threads, 100 posts of average quality are 100 posts of average quality. You do not go through those 100 posts meticulously and force yourself to award 2 quality points because that is how the judging system is. It doesn't work that way. It shouldn't work that way. The moderators I think, are just trying to say that out of all the thousands of thousands of posts that they read, 2 out of every 100 will grab their attention. On average.

With that having been said, there was a time when long periods of time went by without me seeing a moderator around. I think that this is understandable from a posters point of view, but this board needs firm moderation. Not dictatorship, but people who are on the message board often. And people who can take a neutral stance on issues and not get too involved in the deeper issues of posting conflicts.

So does that leave us to moderate ourselves? LOL that is like asking a thousand spiders not to fight over a few flies. The problem with posters issuing recommendations for quality point posts is that our opinions are far too subjective in most cases. We've seen it in this thread, the forming of mateships and bonds between people simply because somebody else recommended them for a qp. There's the obligatory, "Oh, I don't deserve one, but thanks," mentality that comes across from most recipients, but having known who exactly recommended them, gives them cause to be friendly and try to subvert someone into giving another recommendation. What you end up with is a circle of people who recommend people within that circle for quality points, with the odd (and probably geniune) recommendation for a newbie.

The moderators are very very good at remaining neutral. I've spoken to them lots through IM, not to gain any sort of favouritism, but most just to let them know that I stick by their decisions, good or bad. I've had awards, yet I've also had some well deserved penalties. The ball rolls that way and I've been glad to see that the moderators do not play teacher's pet with people. I trust their judgements implicitly.

I would not trust our judgements of ourselves. It opens a can of worms to typical self appraised faults like those I mentioned above.

But discussions like these are where it's all at, and now that the yellows (posters) are fast fading, I'm looking forward to some deep thinking and, if I can muster up the effort, some even deeper replies...

I'm sorry that Sha_Men is no longer here. I think he would like this thread very much and would start a long discussion with you, Shae. Now since he's not among us I'll try to answer.
The main reason for making this thread was to inform the moderators that there is a good post that they should read. Because the moderators are not able to read everything and may miss a really good one.
Now we come to the problem of recommendation. Well, it's not so strange that when someone recommends another member, the latter feels pleased. And he can return the recommendation - how can we stop him? But, as you say, it's the moderators who decide who takes quality points. And they will see if the recommended person really deserves that quality point. So whatever we do, the moderators have the final say. But I think that it's better to have some good and some false recommendations that to have no recommendations at all and the moderators to miss something that shouldn't be missed.
And everyone has a different opinion. A recommends B, C recommends D... I don't think that all the people who recommend do that only because other people have recommended them. Not only the moderators can be neutral!
About the faults - everyone makes faults. Even the moderators can make faults, they are people after all!
But what I like is the idea of the thread - every individual to say what he thinks is of good quality. And we can try to be neutral. The other thing is moderators' work...

Well this issue of how much work is too much work has already been considered by the moderators. I agree that sometimes they may miss a post worthy of a quality point, yet that's just my perspective. I have no real way of knowing (unless I directly ask) if a moderator has already read a particular post or not. We cannot expect them to read everything, yet we would like them to read everything. So what other sort of option do we have?

The apprentice moderator position is a good idea, yet I'm not sure how far Val and the other mods are into the process of applying such positions to the board. The criteria for such positions should also be discussed I think, not only amongst the mods, but amongst the Community in general. Do you need to display certain traits for apprenticeship or do you need to have 'x' amount of stars? Should you have been here for a minimum period or do others recommend you for such a position? What happens if for some reason an apprentice is unable to continue constant Community connection? How far do your Heroes roots extend?

All of these, and more questions need to be answered first before such things can come into place. I'd trust an apprentice 'red star scout' far more than I'd trust the entire community. And having the entire community make legitimate and false recommendations only creates MORE work for the moderators, not less. Having once been free to browse posts and award at their own will, they will now have to chase down every post mentioned. Make no mistake, there will be LOTS and LOTS of recommendations. More than half of this thread has been recommendation and reply based and it's a new thread that has been up for 2 weeks at the most...

*smile*

PS: Just because Sha Men is no longer here, does that mean that nobody will talk to me anymore? LOL! Guess I might just start talking to my errr... coffee cup! YAY!

Hmmm Lith....

Who are you again? Oh yes, you're that Ash-NIR guy. Pity really. You were much smarter when you were Ash. You had a half decent avatar too. lol. Now you just look like... the crow! With a bad name. And bad manners too. And big ego.

Yun, it's not about who I want to talk to, it's about who wants to talk to me...

*looks at cup of coffee once again*

"smarter as Ash-NIR", "big ego", "bad manners"... might I ask why?

BTW: even as Ash-NIR I had the same Avatar (at least the last few months...) I only had Merlin for a month...

Get a life people.

And to all mods out there...
