Boy on Highway

Alright. This is something that I've been writing for one of my Fiction Writing courses. Just thought I might share it with you.

His head swiveled back and forth as he watched the cars speed down the highway. He sat on a rock on the side of a hill counting how many would pass by before he lost his attention and would eventually start again. Pushing back his brown hair, he wiped the sweat off his forehead. He sighed and looked up at the tree next to him. Just two weeks ago, the large oak would have given a wonderfully thick shade until well into the late afternoon, but instead the boy of fourteen looked up at the sun through bare branches of the tree with a frown. He scowled and pulled off his sweater.

“Jonathon Riggs,” he said in high pitched voice, “it is late October and you will wear that sweater. Do you know it was twenty degrees just two nights ago?”

“Jonny! What’s happenin' bro?” called out an older male teenager. He was wearing a t-shirt with the arms ripped off and a pair of baggy jeans that needed to be pulled up about five inches. He had a tattoo on both arms, a skull on his right and cross-bones on his left. There were piercings on his ears and one on his left brow. He took a puff from his cigarette. Jonny turned around to see his friend walking down the winding dirt path towards him.

“Willy! Things are going good. Could be a bit cooler.” Jonny walked towards his friend and held out his fist. Willy gave it a tap with his.

“Where the hell is yer shirt ya fatty?” Willy said slapping Jonny’s stomach with the back of his hand. “No one wants to see that.”

“My mom made me wear this stupid sweater. Said it was October and you don’t wear tee shirts when it’s been twenty degrees. She didn’t even let me wear a tee shirt underneath. She said I would just take it off and wear only the tee shirt.” Jonny spat onto the ground.

“Just tell her to go **** herself.”

“I told you, I’d be grounded forever if I did that.”

“You are just afraid. I’ll tell that ***** what’s up.” Willy took a puff from his cigarette and stuck his hand out to Jonny. “Wanna drag?” Jonny shook his head. “Alright,” Willy said looking off to his left, down the hill, at the cars driving by.

“Actually I change my mind,” said Jonny.

“Too late Bub. You had your chance.”

“Okay,” Jonny said hunching over. He looked off at the traffic.

“Can’t you ever stand up for yourself?”

“What do you mean?”

“If anyone says that you can’t have something you just accept it. If you want something and it was offered to you, take it. Don’t pretend like you don’t want it. And if you change your mind, expect to get it. Don’t take no for an answer. Now do you want a drag?”

“Yea, I do.” Jonny raised his voice. Willy gave him a stern look, but Jonny kept his eyes steady and eventually held out his hand.

“That’s what I wanna here my man,” he said with a smile handing Jonny the cigarette. He pulled out a white plastic-covered box from his back pocket. Flipping open the top of the box, he put his nose to the box and gave them a smell. He had seen his father do it every time he saw him open a box of cigars ever since he was a little kid. As he grew older and began smoking, he adopted the habit even though he didn’t like the smell of cigarettes.

He pulled one out and held it in his hand. Putting the box back into his pocket he began asking Jonny another question.

“You wanna throw some rocks at those cars?”

The sun glistened and shined, turning the black wet rock, into a golden, shining projectile. It reached the peak of its arc and descended landing on the grass well in front of the breakdown lane.

“That was awful Willy,” Jonny said with a chuckle. “And you supposedly play baseball.”

“Do you see how far away we are?”

“Well do you wanna get caught?” Jonny said in a condescending manner. Willy shrugged.

“Caught doing what? Throwing rocks in a field? We aren’t even hitting anything. You sound like your mother. Let’s get closer.” The two teenagers crept closer to the highway. There were no trees to give themselves cover in the general area. However farther down the highway there were plenty of wooded areas from which to throw rocks more deceptively. Jonny was a bit worried that they might get caught.

“Hey, don’t you think we should go throw from the trees if we are gonna get this close?”

“You afraid of getting caught?”

“Why wouldn’t I be afraid of getting caught?”

“Yeah but the whole point of throwing rocks isn’t to hit the cars. It’s taking the risk and getting away with it. Willy picked up another rock and chucked it at an oncoming car. Though his throw was accurate, the vehicle had passed by far before the rock reached its target.

“Come on dude let’s go throw from the trees.”

“I was a little late.” Willy picked up another rock and tossed it to Jonny. “Your turn.” Willy watched two cars go by before he got up the courage. He took a deep breath. He bit his lip and cocked his arm back as he saw a car approaching.

“Don’t throw it!” Willy yelled out. But it was too late. The rock was already soaring through the air. “Get down.” Willy pulled his friend down to the ground hiding in the grass. They watched the rock fly through the air and land smack on the middle of the windshield. Willy cringed.

“snow, Jonny!” Willy said quietly. It wasn’t until he saw the vehicle slam on its brakes, that he noticed the set of flashing lights on the roof of the car and the bright white stripe along the side of the vehicle with the words State Trooper written inside.

“Run,” Willy taunted, but Jonny was too shocked to move. He simply stared at the vehicle come to a halt before he finally thought to listen to his friend. The two sprinted back up the hill to the path where they had met. His friend bolted ahead of him.

Jonny was not the best athlete in the world. He was overweight, and rather slow, though he was certainly not obese. His friend however was quite the athlete despite the smoking. He was slender and wiry and was quite fast. Willy turned around to wait for his slower companion once he reached the path. As Jonny came up through the tall grass onto the path, he looked back over the hill and saw two state troopers sprinting towards the hill, one of them talking into his radio. Willy threw Jonny his sweater, who was still without a shirt.

“I’ll get the backpack. Follow me.”

“Are you alright, son?” asked the officer. He took off his sunglasses and looked the Jonny in the eye. He was nearly in tears, avoiding eye contact as best he could.

“I’m sorry,” he said holding his ankle. It was already swollen up twice the size as normal. Just as he got into the tree line, Jonny tripped over a root and rolled his ankle. He cried out, but his friend darted into the bushes to hide.

“I know this isn’t going to sound nice, but you are going to have to come down to the station.”

“I threw the rock,” a voice called from the bushes. They rustled as a tall skinny boy pushed his way through to the path.

“I threw the rock,” Willy said again. “I tried to get him to throw one, but he wouldn’t do it. He even told me not to. But I threw it anyway.”

“Thanks for being honest, but that still doesn’t change anything, we’re still going to have to go down to the station. Do you even realize the damage you’ve done to the windshield? It shattered. We can’t drive the car until it’s fixed. It will have to be towed.” The officer wore a brown uniform. He was wearing a long sleeve shirt and pants. The beads of sweat dripped down his face. He dried off the sweat with the cuff of his shirt.

“Now what’s most important right now is we get you back to the cruiser. I’ve got some icepacks to put on that ankle of yours. It looks terrible. What’s your name son?” Jonny sat there quiet for a moment clutching his shin.

“Jonny,” he said finally. The officer was about to ask for his last name, but Willy interrupted.

“Willy Travis. I’m his older brother.”

“You boys both full brothers?” asked the officer.

“Yes, Officer.” Willy said with a nod. The officer gave a look to Jonny who nodded as he cringed. Though he appeared to do so out of pain, he was more cringing out of the deeper trouble he would get into if the officer found out they weren’t brothers.

Working as a team, the officer and Willy helped Jonny walk his way back to the cruiser. He wasn’t able to put any pressure on his bad ankle and as a result, had to put his arms around their shoulders as if they were his crutches. The last step was a relief to him, finally able to rest his ankle, but also the beginning of a nightmare. He carefully spun himself around on his good foot and sat down on the edge of the seat. His face was covered in a salty mix of sweat and tears.

He turned to his left and pulled his feet into the back of the cruiser, so he could lean back and get a bit more comfortable. However he wasn’t able to extend his legs out anymore and he could feel his ankle begin to throb. Willy got inside the cruiser on the opposite side and gave Jonny a sad look.

“I’m so sorry man,” he said.

“You better be sorry. Look what you got me into.” The two looked up at the patrolmen who was standing a few yards in front of the hood talking on his radio. Jonny lowered his voice before he continued.

“And you are getting us into bigger trouble. What the hell are you doing saying I’m your brother?”

“I’m keeping you out of trouble with your parents. Look my parents are out of town. My older brother is twenty and he will come to pick us up. Don’t worry about it. He will cover for us. He’s helped me out before.”

“I don’t like the sound of this.” Jonny said. He took in a deep breath in through his nose and let it out through his mouth. As he exhaled, he let his lips relax and vibrate ever so slightly. The officer put away his radio and turn around to wave at the second patrol car that had just pulled up behind them. Jonny and Willy both turned around in their seats as best they could to get a good view, however Jonny couldn’t lift his legs up on the seat to turn around properly and could only look out of the corner of his eye. This time both of them took a deep breath and looked each other in the eye.
