Is pro wrestling an art form?

I say it is.

We know this a couple different ways.

1.  It is watched and enjoyed by many people in several different countries.  This is highly characteristic of an art form.

2.  It takes creative energy to script good dramas.  This is a prime marker of "art"

3.  There is "quality" associated with it.  For example some wrestler's trash talking is much more entertaining than others. Some are also more interesting to watch in the ring.  And some wrestling organizations are more successfull then others because they put more imaginative effort into their production.  This "high" and "low" quality is highly indicative of art.

Having argued that pro wrestling is an art form, then I think that it wouldn't be improper to use certain labels when referring to some people in the wrestling world, for example "genius" or "prodigy".  Or perhaps even "hack".

What say you to that?

Is wrestling an artform?

Well, my parents would certainly think so

I guess I haven't watched enough of it to comment with any kind of authority, but it is definately 'Drama'.  And Drama is considered one of the Arts.  So for this very reason alone, wrestling should be considered an artform.

Similarly some of the costuming could be considered wearable art.

And, just not to disappoint the male members of HC, I must mention the finely crafted bodies of some of the male wrestlers - flesh art

EDIT: I was going to post a pic for you, but after looking through a heap - I just can't bear to look at the steriod pumped big things after all... *sigh*  I am sure though that they do craft these monstrocities muscular bodies as an artist creates a sculpture.

I am a major pro wrestling fan and yes it is an art form. Its the same as a choreographed fight in a movie, only less planned out.

Theres alot I can say about this sport depending on where the business is at.
Some business is drama.
Some has actual real wrestling.

All I can say is I wouldnt want a 7 foot giant who ways 3 to 400 pounds coming at me full speed when I am in the turnbuckle lol.

Pro wrestling is an artform and like every artform like say, for instance, martial arts, is fraught with danger. Sure, it may be fake, but people get injured and sometimes killed doing it. Ultimate fighting and modern Muay Thai boxing has that same sense of danger. And wrestlers don't even have stunt doubles.

80$ well spent!

The "Smackdown" superstars, John Cena, Kurt Angle, Batista, Rey Mysterio and the gang are scheduled to blow "Iad Eliahu" stadium away with 3 different shows on 27-29 of July.

Me and my best friend acted quickly and immidiately ordered our tickets, we got good seats in the bottom section couple of meters from the stage.

WWE is like a theater or a circus of some sort, it always provides a good show and a great way to spend your off time. Can't remember how many times we have wrestled at school, at home, in the army I used to use chicken wing on him and he always used to tap out (it really hurts)

Of course the WWE divas attract audience that never liked wrestling at all, girls like Meleena, Lita, Torrie Wilson, Candice Michelle are probably sex symbols all over the world by now and trust me half of the 80$ was spent on just to be able to see Meleena doing her squat entrance in person (but she isn't coming, she moved to ECW!!! )

Only 12 more days to go untill the show and I cross my fingers so that the mess we have going on here wouldn't make them change their minds and stay at home,

WWE wrestlers please come and give us a great show!

Lol, this totally cracks me up

There's a thin line between art and entertainment on one hand, and between art and kitch on the other hand.  Wrestling is about as far away from that line as the moon from the earth.

Will leave it up to you to place wrestling on either side of that line...

Kind of like when you can see a punch miss a wrestler then all of a sudden they are flying 5 feet in the air & out of the ring .

Oh & John Cena has been in raw for heck of days TNTINA .
WHen was the last time you seen it & why do you leave a 500 thousand dollar trust fund for your two stuffed care bear dolls ?

P.S Melena also been wrestling in raw not too long ago as well with Nitro.

John Cena is coming, and meleena canceled her arrival just a couple of weeks ago, so I guess we will have some mixed shows including the world heavyweight championship fight!

Maybe the great Kali will come too hehehe that's if he could fit in the plane...

I'll bring my 619 T-shirt and rock to Mysterios entrance music

And most important shout "you suck" to Kurt Angle, I always wanted to do that!

Given what passes for modern "art" in some galleries these days I guess wrestling could just about qualify.

Haha i'd love to be Edge's stunt double.

The only thing that gets me is how to some people everything is "fake"

let me throw you off of a 15 foot steel cage and see if you can fake being hurt from that.

Okay, since we all agree that Pro Wrestling is an art form, then now I'm going to ask the question "Should professional wrestling be publicly subsidised?"

I say yes, it should be.  Governments subsidize symphonies, operas, ballets, public sculture, theatre etc...
What exactly is it that seperates these forms of art from professional wrestling?

Professional Wrestling makes a phenominal amount of money anyway.  Without the subsidy of the other artforms you mentioned it would be nearly impossible for a talented artist {all the arts} to pursue their career and live {unless they have someone rich supporting them}.

In Oz sports get a big chunk of gvt funding... how is the money distributed - I guess it depends on public pressure.

The government has stuff to do with theatre and stuff? since when?

The local governments can only control what is shown at their arenas, nothing more. Which is why on some shows seem more tame than others, because that state/city has regulations.

No.

As far as I know Pro Wrestling is not in dire financial trouble unlike many of the other art forms. I'd give it money before I gave it so say a modern "artist" (term used loosely given some of the absolute rubbish the more famous ones produce) but I would never give the governing body money ahead of say an art gallery or theatre.

I think the money distributed by pro wrestling organisations is spent on promoting main events such as Wrestlemania and the like, to pay the wrestlers who give their lives for this art, and to fund for world tours. You wonder with all the money they make they could give some to a third country.

Anyways, welcome back privatehudson, who has been MIA for god knows when, but he returns with his presence and his wisdom.
