A.I.?

anybody noticed the difference between how the A.I. plays on the higher dif's as opposed to the lower difs ? in the old games the higher dif's just meant more less cash and stuff to start with, but now the A.I. goes crazy agressive at the higher lvl's. just curiose if anybody else has noticed this? also I've heard some complaints about the A.I. not sure why though, i think this is by far the best A.I. i've seen in a homm game, anybodies who's played the game at the 2 highest settings has prob. experienced how well the comp hit and runs now, #$%@#$%@ dirty rotten unhonorable cheating comp!!! esp. them necro b@stards!!!! starting to really hate playing against them. either way i think it's really great the way A.I. now amps up as the dif's go up.

though many people complain of the AI, (and there are a few quirks) it does play pretty good at the tougher difficulty levels.  One think to note, the computer does 'cheat' at higher levels (ie. cash/resource bonuses given at regular intervals).

Well its obvious they cheat anyways, if they hit and run.  However, it does PROVE that the computer is smarter....since they have figured out how to EXPLOIT a flaw in the game design....making it possible to hit and run.  Heroes 4 corrected that flaw....and Heroes 5 regressed?  Even tho heroes 3 was SOO great, it still required about a half a dozen player agreed rules to make for a perfectly balanced enjoyable game.  Then there as Heroes 4, I really dont recall needing any rules. Now we are back to Heroes 5 where I already notice rules needed like "NO DD"(Instant Travel)

Personally my list of agreements look like this before I will play now::

1. No Instant Travel
2. No Hit and Run
3. 10 min timer atleast
4. Must use random hero option, no picking heros.

The AI isn't too bad. Just sometimes I've been screwed and the AI didn't take advantage of it.

As for hit and run.. 1 trick I use to lessen the damage of any hit and run is... Don't place troops I want to lose on the battlefield.

And if you don't have all 7 spots full.. split some troops and get them back. There are more options than there were in Heroes 3.

Id rather lose 60 zombies than 5 wraiths for example.

I personally think that no Instant Travel rule is really silly. Instant Travel is VERY limited as it is so it is not nearly as abusable as dimension door in heroes 3 was. And you need both level 15 hero and mage guild level 4 to get it, so if you manage both those you have definetily earned it.

Uh and hit and run? With heroes now having initiative it is rather unlikely that a scout hero would have time to get a spell off AND run against anyway decent army.

As for random hero, I have used random TOWN to all of my ToH games so far, that is much more fun.

Sure you gotta get to level 15, but the problem isnt with the ease of getting it.  The problem is with what you can do with it. In a game with bobby on map neigbhors, that map is quite ingenius with the maze like layout and design. Lotta places to travel and distances underground and thru portals etc...and he simply waits till I am away from town and Instant travels over a cliff and walks into my town. Stealing all my creatures etc...poof game over. Totally dismissing the nature and designed paths of the map. Did he EARN the right to just get my town for free?  Sure he may have earned level 15, but he didnt negotiate the mazes and the cretures that were placed on map to earn my castle. Same goes for map Dragon Pass for example....they have extremely hard guards to break to middle. 40 Dragons! Why put them there if you can just jump them lol.  Defeats the purpose.

About  hit and run....it isnt the scouts I am worried about.  Its the main hero with 1000 damage implosion or empowered pass spells that hit you kill half your level 7's then leave and come back at you again and again....

And yes I too prefer to play with all random options.

Damn Jinxer, least you could have done is mentioned I didn't like how that game went either and we reloaded and continued without Instant Travel.

Okay well as with so many things in this game, so much depends on the map. For Neighbors, I definately think the game is more fun for everyone if IT isn't used. On the other hand I have to disagree that it shouldn't be used on Dragon's Pass. First off I think the guards on that are there simply to keep you contained for a while. In any case, I have been playing with modified rules on it. The reason is the luck factor. Say my guards to the middle are bone dragons and my opponents are titans or any of the colored dragons; I can pretty much bet on winning that game without IT because Bones aren't that difficult to take down. (Devils, angels or colossus aren't bad either as long as they don't come bringing too many of their upgraded cousins along for the party.) So while I'm busy clearing the middle my opponent is waiting to build up so he can challenge his drags.

Anyway what I've been playing with is each player starts on opposite sides with one being red or yellow and the other green or blue respectively. You are allowed to IT to the other area on your side (So if you started as red you can jump the guards to yellow.) or to the middle. However, you must fight the guards to get to either of the player positions on the other side. This gives each player a fair chance, regardless of what guards there are, to get to the middle about the same time and to one of the utopias. Otherwise you can end up sitting for a week or so with nothing to do since you can clear your area by 3rd week, waiting to have enough forces to tackle titans which you will likely lose anyway while your opponent crushes his bone drag guards and cleans out the middle. Nothing more boring and disheartening then having that situation happen, I can tell you from personal experience.

OH MY.... SORRY Bobby!!!  I totally didnt realize that the post made you sound like a dishonorable point hungry bastage. lol

For the record.  Bobby immediately offered a reload and suggested we finish the game not using I.T. for remainder of game.  My posting that story about our game was not intended to bash bobby, but just to point out an instance of a game for an example.

At any rate I wanted to clear LordBobbyOhms good and honorable name!

Still waiting on that rematch btw.

good enough

first off , i honestly don't think IT will be an issue once we are able to start creating our own maps, you cann't expect a bunch map makin hacks from some game company to know the first thing about making truly usefull multi maps!! how long did we wait for 3do to come up with some and they never did, why expect it any different from ubi or nival ? the fact that theirs a few spots in maps like neighbors where you can IT thru is probably just bad map testing on there part. secondly, although you can hit and run in this game it way harder to do and costs way more now then it used to, and even then it may end up getting you nothing if you don't have the initiative anyways. when i talk about the comp hit/running i more mean that it is hard to get the comp to finish a decsisive battle as it is way better at sensing it's odds are no good and then scooting for home with most of it's armies and arts intact. my new fav, art when playin comp now is shackles!!! also as JB said, you don't even have to risk your best troops anymore anyways, you just leave em outta the fight, load up 7 spots with singles of the first lvl persuasion and woopy, he hit and run me woo wooo!! if we had the map editor we could just fix or plain ole throw out the cd maps and get down to some quality multi play.

ps. and i don't beleive for a minute sir bobby was so nice Jinxer ole buddy, you probably whined and cried at him for at least 30-40 mins on the IM before he finally caved in and restarted the game with you!!!

The AI is great in this game opposed to the older versions. And IT should be banned MP neighbours.
