Heroes V - is it worthwhile playing it?

Hi all!

I've been away from this wonderful community for a year or 2 (maybe more?). OK, I loved HoMM3 (like everyone else here) and, like many of you, tried HoMM4 but found it completely boring and uninstalled it after a couple of weeks or so (ok if you're a H4 fan, no flaming please ). For the last year, I've been playing Civ4 - single player, but with a nice online community for game discussion and offline tournaments.

Last week I finally bought, installed and patched to 1.3 HoMM5. I haven't had the time to browse all these threads, but judging from "played games" stats from ToH main page I can pretty much assume online play is not as popular as it was in HoMM3 times. Am I wrong?

As for the game itself, I have played the first few campaign scenarios, and the game doesn't look as bad as HoMM4 - of course not as great as HoMM3, but might have some potential.

Any H3 oldtimers already playing H5 online, or planning to do so?

well I like it... but the lack of games vs homm3 is partly due to the long wait for the 'multiplayer patch' that only came out recently... and that the ubi server is not as community friendly as the zone was.

Think its about time TOH got its own server

Since Ves takes Pride in everything he does I am sure TOH server would make the zone look bad.

As i posted this before

I second what jinxer said , a private "chat-like" place for toh can potenially help homm5 toh situation..

what's this wierd feeling i feel?

I think i might feel like i agree with something that Jinxer has said wow felt never this wierd before!! hehehe, in all seriousness though, maybe Jinxer is right on this one, is it possible to settup our own server system? are there legal ramifications to doing it ? UBI might not like this. Maybe worth looking into

I do have to agree also.. I think the reason I have yet to play a multiplayer game of H5 is due to UBI's not so great server. The few times I've gone on there.. I haven't had much luck finding an opponent so I'd just go back to working on a map, playing single player, etc

Having a dedicated server is not a problem... its the programming/integration side to actually make the game launch through the server.  That almost seems impossible without the code.  I don't think UBI would care if ToH actually managed to set up this.

But consider this: It would backfire in a sense, because there are 100s of players going to the UBI servers daily, and if everyone active in ToH moved to an independent server, it would even further alienate any gamers who would ever get wind of the tournament.

I have 3 computers on 3 different internet connections... I'm thinking of buying two more homm5 games, and having at least 2 computers online at all times with a ToH gameroom open on Ubi's ranked server room1.  Its the only way any 'word' will get out on the tournament with the random gamers that come in... besides the few who do play through there for ToH.

I've seen the statistics... there are about 40 full games that are completed on the UBI servers per day (100s of incomplete ones too, however).  Right now ToH has about 5 full games that are reported per day.  So there are many who if only knew about ToH would raise activity significantly.

Ves few things : first of all i think the idea is to have a place for players to get together and chat , I think altough a chat program that would luanch game would be nice but i doubt it can be done or if it is then needs to consult with homm makers. But we don't really need a program to luanch the game we can still luanch it and also play it at ubi but the ubi chat rooms are just awefull so i don't agree it would backfire ,still you will have players in ubi spreading the idea of toh only they'll have a better place to find other toh opponents ,yet occasionally when trying to get a game you can speak to someone at ubi servers and explain what is toh, further i think thats how things are now , personally i'm rarly at ubi's servers i only try to find players at msn messanger which is not so comfy.. so i still hope u reconsider..

ALL TO THE LOBBY!

we still can talk in ubi lobby room, no? yes.

other thing i noticed, when i speak 'www.toheroes.com' 'or anyone for toh game?' rarely i get reactions of 'wazat?' or 'ok i check later' style. Maybe cause many really do not speak englisj, mostly ussr's. Some also dont care of joining a 'cult'..

my point is:
we over-inflating the issue, ubiserver is almost as good as zone and gs, only different. And, if our toh butts take more place in there than miscalenious baastrds, they will want IN as well. Ok, we cant go to lobby while in game, then again turns and transfers are much faster than h3-h4, so we prolly wouldnt anyway.

also, msn thing ruins sense of community alrdy. when online h5 gets warmer and i be able to play more games, i wont even open damn msn thing. And we can always play a fresh toher we just recruited, even get a bonus for that like amway thing

hi amazon king,
I'm still around, but like rych and kuma, waiting for the RMG to see if we like H5. Apparently it will be released in an addon before Christmas.

well I played few TOH games on H3... and now I'm trying to enter on this game... and I like it... and the ubi server at least for me is not a problem... the problem is that there are few TOH players,  is not like in zone that there were always about 30 players at any time... I guess a lot of veterans are waiting for something that really change their minds about H5... it have potential... and I hope with the first expasion a lot of veterans finally can say that this is a great game to play...

We have now the map editor and I'm sure there are a lot of nice maps in construction... so we have to wait and see what happens...

actually I have about 30 contacts in my MSN of guys who add for TOH...

another option is hamachi I didn't use it yet... but it seems to work for some players

At this point, the way I see it those who are still making excuses on why they aren't playing, and 'waiting'... will not be playing now or in the future, RMG or not.

Thank you all for the kind responses. I felt encouraged by them and tried to check out this ubi.com stuff. I might be dumb, blind or both, but still haven't figure out how to enter the infamous ubi.com game lobby.

Things I have already tried:
1.From game, multiplayer, online: game asks for an online key. I tried my game serial number (it's attached to the dvd or manual, canīt remember now). Invalid number. (p.s. yes, I entered a game store and paid some US$40 for it).
2.From Internet explorer, open ubi.com. Game rooms for Far cry and other irrelevant stuff, no HoMM5 rooms.
3.Downloaded the ubi.com applet(the little bugger which comes with something like zonefriends). Again, I have the options for other games, not HoMM5.

Any hints?

NP I am just too dumb, I hadn't entered the "-" between each block of letters/numbers. Now all is ok, except for the fact I didn't find any ToHers online.
