How does WoG work?

Whilst discussing modding HoMM5 in a big way, I began to think, just how did the WoG team edit Heroes 3, even though it wasn't exactly easy to mod? What is the scope for doing something similar in H5? I don't think you ever got hold of the source code, did you? As a programmer I'd certainly be interested in learning how WoG was done. Would a WoG expert kindly explain?

There was an add on for HoMM3 a short time before WoG was released, but it never caught on. I guess you could say it was like choosing between VHS or Beta video taping, with WoG being the VHS. In any event, the first attempt at modding H3 was "The Memory" by Karpecko. Since I never played it, I can't say what was in it or what it did.
One of the first things that evolved in H3 was the "trait" files. once you had one of these, all you had to do was put it in the Heroes 3/Data file in order for it to work. Second evolvement, that I can recall, was the advent of using newer portraits instead of the ones that came with the game. This started the way for serious computer programmers to start tinkering with H3.
As time went on Slava eperimented with coding and somehow got into the guts of the game and eventually created what we are able to play today. WoG.

And, no, we don't have the source code to H3. We've asked for it, but have been refused many times.
As for doing the same to H5? All I can say is, time will tell But really, I seriously doubt that it will happen for this game.

I suppose such question was adressed to "our expert" a thousands times... I dont think he will answer on it one more time. As already ByteBandit said we dont have a source code and how Slava has done all these things with WoG is his professional secret.

And even theoretically... Does it worth it?

That seems to be the nub (rub?) of the discussion, yes. Thanks for the description ByteBandit.

Your welcome. And as Darkloke said, it's Slavas' secret how he made WoG and I believe Slava deserves the right to refuse explanation as to how he did it!
