For the music...

First I must agree with most of thee above, this is indubitably a great thread.
But since I fell for the music part I must give all you instrumentalists out there a suggestion.
Listen to Wagner. Especially the uvertyres to most of his operas. He had the ability to set the scenery in your mind five minutes before the curtain is even lifted. For example in the Walkürie (Valkyrie); you immediately hear there's a storm going on, and that somebody is being chased through the forest and over the moors.
Maybe if you think of your music first you then get the feeling on how your city view is to be.

Names for Creatures:

When you build a race, try to find unique creatures' names for it. There shouldn't be many creatures that start with the race name. The names should be unique for every faction.
You can invent names, but usually it's better to use existent names. There are names from different mythologies, from fantasy books and games, etc. Use the names you find and mention where the name is taken from.

Examples:
1. Instead of calling a creature "Lizardman Warrior" search for kinds of Lizardmen. The Lizardman Warrior is called Kroxigor, which is much better name.
2. Looking for a kind of Giant that can be in a Norse faction? Google "norse giant" and you might find a suitable name for a creature. I found Jotnar, which is a great name for a Norse Giant.

Familiar Creatures:

Add one or two familiar creatures (from older versions of the game) to your race, but do it carefully. Make sure they fit for the race and find a reasonable explanation for the connection between them and the race.

Examples:
1. You create an amphibious swamp race. You can put there the Basilisk - familiar and loved creatures from H3 Fortress. His connection to the race can be that the Basilisk is an ancient creature that lives on the race's lands for thousands of years.
2. If you create a cavern race, you can use the Medusa, a known mythological creature that appeared on H1, H2 and H3. You can say the Medusas are ruled by the race, and forced to fight for them on battles.

I dont agree.
I would never call a lizardmen CREATURE for example Broxigar/Kroxigor (now that sounds finnish!).

Maybe for a hero, but never "hero names" for a creature.

This is way for people to find original names, and avoid calling all the creatures "(Race) Archer", "(Race) Warrior", "(Race) Mage", etc.

I think that people will appreciate see a faction with special names, more than they will apreciate faction that all its creatures have descriptive names, although it's okay to use them rarely.

I'll give you an example.

What would you prefer to see?

A
The Mindflayers Cavern:
1. Illithid - Psionic Illithid | Ulitharid
2. Shadowling - Dark Shadowling | Thick Shadowling
3. Beholder - Evil Eye | Master Beholder
4. Venom Spawn - Toxic Spawn | Acidic Spawn
5. Shadow Caster - Shadow Priest | Dark Caster (Yes, I have here a single descriptive name)
6. Arquen - Quick Arquen | Anri Arquen
7. Mawashee - Night Mawashee | Tombs Mawashee

or

B
The Mindflayers Cavern (Descriptive Names):
1. Mindflayer Fighter - Psionic Mindflayer | Mindflayer Infantry
2. Dark Cloud - Weakening Cloud | Slowing Cloud
3. Lazer Eyes - Evil Eyes | Dark Eyes
4. Venom Spawn - Toxic Spawn | Acidic Spawn (Couldn't find a descriptive name, so I left it as it is)
5. Shadow Caster - Shadow Priest | Dark Caster
6. Shape Shifter - Greater Shape Shifter | Arch Shape Shifter
7. Darkness Master - Night Monster | Corpse Eater

I would definitely prefer to see A.
If you hear "Illithid", you know it's a unique creature of the Mindflayers (maybe you don't know this specific creature, but you can see my point). When you hear "Fighter", you can't know exactly where does it come from. It can be a creature from any town.
I guess the HOMM5's creators agree with me. They gave every creature a unique name that you can know where does the creature come from. They would never call the Zombie "Undead Man".

Its not the same thing.

For example:
Lizardmen Kroxigar, there is no word called Kroxigar.
Nival/Ubisoft never called for example the Skeletons for example;

"Skeleton Monidar", because there is no such word called Monidar.
Also i prefer A, but i dont know much about the Mindflayers, and i cannot say that i think all the names are great there.

I have a question:  What is the minimum length of time between when a creature is first created (In a book, mythology, movie, videogame) before the creature can be used?

EG: The Crumple Horned Snorkack from Harry Potter: If, for some obscure reason, I wanted to use it in a faction, how many years until the creature enters the general pool of use? (Eg, people use hobbits, and they're a Tolkein creation)

I'm starting work on a different faction whose racial skill involves the 12 Zodiac star signs. Problem is, I can't think of a race.

Also, for my lizardmen swamp faction, I can't think of a fourth level unit that would be fitting, and I would prefer it to be a calvary-esque unit.

P.S. that doesn't mean you should keep on starting threads about unimportant things or else...

Crossing into disputable territory here- but...
Make the "race" be celestials, and the smurf and whatever little guy scholars or temple guards of some kind.

Example:
Libra (I DONT CARE IF YOU DONT LIKE ME USING ME!) Tier 7- caster/large creature/flier
Libra is a living Constellation pulled from the heavens, but it can be done but once a week, so many of these celestials are formed at the time.
spells: Balance of the Heavens- select an other friendly creature. All other enemy creatures of the same Tiar are brought to the same number. (e.g. you have 136 temple guards, enemy has 99k skeleton archers. If Libra beats skele archers to initiative, skele archers are dropped to 136 rather than 99k)

Temple Guard Tier 1- melee/walker/smurf/meatshield
With minimal armor and weaponry, Temple guards mostly walk alongside the celestials rather than alone. Celestials may give buffs to the Guards to make them on par with the enemies.
Skills: Aura of Duty: when the stack dies, any other mortal Celestials gain 0.1x times their attack, defense, and initiative where x is the number of Guards in the stack.

Well, hope it comes out great, PM me with any factions you finish!

and a BIG thanks to alcibiades for making this topic.
