imps

They can NOT fly.. but they can teleport(most imps) they also can cast some MINOR spells.. Not to big but just some lower fire/ice balls. Mind prison and the like.. Imps are familiars from the nasty devils/Warlocks.. and mostly made from a evil fire curse.. they will multiply when toughing the flames of hell. IMps are mostly more evil then their master.. Learning from their master then reach a level and kill their master is often..(warlock masters not devils)
they also are like the second mind of the warlock.. locking up important information for the warlock so the warlock wont have to remember himself..

Alright, just to be technically correct, I must set some things straight. To start I am telling you what I know and what I have gotten out of a dictionary.  Heroes of Might and Magic follows mythology mixed with the Middle Ages and set in another world with magic so 3DO and you readers may want to see this. Lets start with imps.  First off, you can say imps are mischivious but not all together evil, and even if they are the arn't going to be more evil than their masters, or much smarter.  The dictionary says imps are small demons.  It also says to furnish with wings.  Basically what this is saying is that imps are small winged demons.   What we know however is that they are also called on by a higher power...in other words there small little demon gofers.  Like lacies are to a supervillian, impsare to their masters.  Imps, unlike the more powerful demons, cannot posses the minds of anything but can mess with them to the point where it seems the thing is possesed.  This is a mind spell.  Basically like hypnotism.  When imps ae created or born or whatever they will normally have short wings to help them move.  This is needed because of their size and the formation of their legs.
Now for Familiars.  Familiars are imps but imps are not familiars.  To explain this I'll go back to the dictionary.  An attendant spirit, often taking animal form. One who performs domestic service in the household of a high official.  This is the definition givin for familiars  These creatures are a bit more powerful than imps and can do a bit more.  Familiars are often more close and higher in power to their masters than imps are.  Other than these things the two are very alike.
Now to sum it all up imps and familiars are flyers, yes they cast mind spells (usually nothing higher than a leval 1 spell though), No they cannot teleport this would take much more power than what is available to them, and finally imps and familiars don't always come from hell.  The names themselves were origianlly associated to witches, wizards, and warlocks.
thank-you for taking the time to read this.  And no offence to the writer of the quote above, I was just using it as an example.

I think I should point out that nothing anybody has really said about imps has much relevence in any kind of mythology or traditional fantasy. Some things like imps being created by a fire curse or casting mind lock have no baring whatsover on traditional imps, and are presumably taken from a single story, fantasy game, or simply an overactive imagination.

The closes thing to a classic imp is the one in D&D. It has a barbed poison tail, and an oversized nose, wings which let it fly, and some very minor spellcasting and shapeshifting. However even this imp hasn't really shaped fantasy as much as alot of D&D has, and it is too much of a stretch to consider it a traditional imp.

Actual imps vary a great deal between games, books, and stories. There are examples of teleporting imps, flying imps, spellcasting imps, evil demonic imps, and imps that aren't any of these things. As a result anyone trying to say that an imp must be a certain way or shouldn't be a certain way really doesn't really know what they are talking about.

this idea about the imps was just based on my gut reaction. and the gut reaction seems to be based on i-don't-remember-what fairy tales and short stories i have read a long time ago. e.g. sth like a fairy tale where some devil wanted to marry a woman. the woman found excuses to delay by asking for various kinds of things, and some minor demon fetched them, but the woman had always sth more to ask and so the day dawned. i got the strong impression that what took most of the time was not the journey to hell and back but the conversation. well.. this isn't a very good example, but at least it's better than nothing.

mightymage:
so the imps are just some eros-like mischievious beings?
"What we know however is that they are also called on by a higher power...in other words there small little demon gofers."
what does it mean exactly? could it be interpreted as imps being summoned by higher power?
what is a gofer?
about the teleporting.. i wouldn't be so sure that some minor teleporting couldn't be a minor spell :-9

niteshade:
i just wanted to say that i would like the imps implemented *right* rather than the way i think they would look coolest. how can i say that now, lol?

gofer info

A gofer?  you don't know what a gofer is?  it's in the name, and if you still don't know, a person or thing that will go fer this or go fer that.  It's an actual job at some companies to be a gofer.

so.. gofer = errand-boy as far as i understand your explanation. well, sounds natural for an imp.

btw.. imps being mischievious beings that are not necessarily altogether evil.. so what are they doing in the death town? i guess the only logical conclusion that i see is that they are mischievious with death there. getting ppl killed in a mocking way or sth?

Hey Gerdash, glad you figured it out.  Just on a note however, I don't know too much about homm4 except for a few things but I guess that's why I like reading these posts.  To continue with the whole imps thing, the only reason 3DO kept them around was probably because they are an important part to death or evil.  Not that they are evil though, just mis-informed.  I called imps and familiars mischievous because that's usually how they are depicted.  Just out of curiosity though, witches have always had somthing to do with the devil, you know like a pact or somthing, they were also always asociated with imps and familiars, the ones who would do their bidding with no question asked.  I know this quite well because I've studied alot of history and I am also reading the Crucible in my American Lit. class at school.  Speaking of that, I would like you people to read this little excerpt from a part in the book called "How To Spot A Witch" By Adam Goodheart
 Nabbing the Elusive Imp

One of the most devious ways to foil witches is to catch them with their familiars, the imps in animal form who do their nefarious bidding (or in other words, extremely wicked tasks).  Many witch hunters believed that the imps could not go for more than 24 hours without being suckled by their master or mistress.  Therefore, when you have a suspect in prison, drill a peephole in the cell door and keep a close watch.  If you see a rat, mouse, or bettle in the cell you've nabbed an imp.  Beware of even the most improbable animals.  In 1645, an Englishman named John Bysack confesed that for the last 20 years, he had regularly suckled imps in the form of snails.

I hope any of you who read this enjoyed it.  It kind of made me think why there was never any conection like that in heroes.  On another note, What if witch heroes had the ability to summon imps and at higher levals, familiars.
For those who did not know by the way, suckled means to nourish as if with the milk of the breast.

ok, i thought i would not write it,because i have given up taking part of discussing stupid computer games because of a recient grave disappointment (well, not terribly serious, but true), but.. well, maybe i will. especially because it contradicts my own idea and it would be unfair not to write about it.

found a very appropriately medieval picture of a flying eros-like imp with some generalized animal face whith his hands above the heads of a man and a woman who were sitting in a shady place the man holding the woman's hand if i remember correctly, or at least sth like that. and the name of the painting was 'consolence' or sth like that (well, trying to translate it into english). but it looked like the imp didn't rely on his wings for flying indeed, although they were bit larger that the usual wings of eros. but they were homm3 imp style wings nevertheless, just a little bit larger (well, somehow i don't like sth about the look of homm4 imp's new wing style, although i cannot exactly say what. maybe it has some modern attitude, but i don't think i can point out anything specific). and.. eros doesn't rely on wings for flying either, so maybe it's the similar type of thing that keeps those mischevious spirits(?) in the air and the wings are there just to make ppl guess that they can fly. well, it's probably some force of mischief that keeps them in the air anyway, or maybe they are spirits that don't weight "much" and just float rather than fly.

The vampire isn't that bad looking, but their attack animation is horrible. In H3 they "scratched" in H4 they ... errr.. suck (?) with a blue color. Rubbish.

The imps, however, are great in H4. In fact, I think they're somewhat better than the skeletons. They're fast and have mana leech. COOL!

p.s I've now hopefully ressurected this old thread!!
